Is there a specific way to get encryped DVD's to play with Suse 9.0 Pro or can I just follow the instructions on http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/>. The page listed in the Suse install screens about Xine didn't work for me. Thanks Simon

The Xine that ships with SuSE will not play encrypted DVDs. You can either follow the cambuca site's instructions or visit the packman site - http://packman.links2linux.org/?action=index - which has a huge range of SuSE multimedia stuff ready-compiled for download. Google against lists.suse.com for further details, as this subject crops up all the time. :) Fish

I always have downloaded the required packages from the packman site. Use google to find it, it's a lesson on searching the internet for what you need. Ken

Simon, I had exactly the same problem. Here's what I did just 2 hours ago, and ........ I can now play encrypted DVDs allright !!!!! ;-) 1. Install xine : Download libxine1-1_rc3-0.pm.0.i586.rpm and libxine1-dvd-1_rc3-0.pm.0.i586.rpm from http://packman.links2linux.org Install with YaST2 2. Install libdvdcss (= decoder for encrypted DVD's) Download libdvdcss2-1.2.8-0.pm.2.nosrc.rpm from the same website as mentioned above. Download libdvdcss-1.2.8.tar.bz2 from http://www.videolan.org/pub/libdvdcss/ Installation : Move libdvdcss-1.2.8.tar.bz2 to /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/ Run the following as root : cd to the directory where libdvdcss2-1.2.8-0.pm.2.nosrc.rpm resides rpmbuild --rebuild --target=i686 libdvdcss*.nosrc.rpm ( this will build an RPM file libdvdcss2-1.2.8-0.pm.2.i686.rpm in /usr/src/ packages/RPMS/i686/ ) Install libdvdcss2-1.2.8-0.pm.2.i686.rpm with YaST2 3. Enable DMA for DVD drive Got to YaST2 - Hardware - IDE DMA mode Set DMA On for DVD drive Enjoy. -- Jan Elders Nuenen the Netherlands

Jan, Thanks for writing such a clear instruction. I lurk here looking for good little tidbits to help make my life easier and you just contributed. While it's not as succinct as RTFM, it certainly goes a long way further in helping the helpless. And, it works just like you said! Thanks and have all the fun you can stand this holiday time. Hmm. That link goes to http://developers.videolan.org/libdvdcss/index.html which does not have a link to the libdvdcss2-1.2.8-0.pm.2.nosrc.rpm that I could see - or am I just not seeing it right?

Yep, some judge in the USA ruled essentially that if you want to watch DVD's, you have to use Windows or any operating system the copywright holders build them for. A few other places have ruled that watching DVD's under Linux is a crime and in Norway Jon Johannsen is facing a retrial for having written the libdvdcss code - he was acquited on the first trial following his arrest at the age of 16 and confiscation of his equipment. We used to castigate the Soviet Union for such deeds, now they have gone, it leaves our lawmakers free to occupy the space to enact laws that the Soviets had trademarked, just slightly changing the rhetoric, but it remains Soviet in nature.
