Need suggestions for backup over the Net

I'm running SuSE 8.2 Pro with Shorewall on several machines in 4 different physical locations. I want to be able to admin from one location and backup a certain directory from two separate locations to a dedicated harddrive in a third location. They are all hooked into broadband. I have accounts with dyndns.org for each location. I have established ssh communications between the locations. Each location has people who only know how to push a button so I need to automate the backup as much as possible. In each of two locations I have two windows boxes which will connecting to a Linux box which is the router/firewall, etc connected to the net. The windows machines contains the one directory which needs to be backed up. I figure Samba/LinNeighborhood could be used for that. Or I can also do some sort of win ssh/sftp. So my question to all the gurus out there is which method would you suggest to implement the automatic backup via Internet? My thought is to use a script to login via ssh then do an sftp of the one directory I need to backup. The script to be executed as a daily chron job. Is this to simplistic? Is there an easier way to do it? Should I do some kind of GUI so the operators will have a way to do the backup manually? As far as the admin is concerned I think I will setup for VNC client from my machine. Any suggestions? And yes I have been reading all TFMs I can find on ssh. vnc, and vpn, hence my seeking sage advice. I'm sure someone else has already gone through this exercise and can tell me how to avoid the pitfalls. All answers will be considered except for those which tell me what I should do to myself. KDirstat

Hi ALL, I was prompted to try KDirstat by an earlier thread. Very cool app! I am on SuSE 8.2 KDE 3.1.3. The graphics on the bottom win in KDirstat are awesome. I am just beginning to grasp just what they depict. Anyone want to help enlighten the new user? Lucent SuSE

Has anyone managed to get a Lucent chipset modem to work in SuSE 8.2. I Had it working in Redhat no worries, just downloaded the driver, installed it and whammo. I can get the driver installed in SuSE 8.2 but when I try to dial in it freezes X, so if anyone has gotten one of these cheap ass modems to work, can they let me know what they did. Has anyone managed to get a Lucent chipset modem to work in SuSE 8.2. I Had it working in Redhat no worries, just downloaded the driver, installed it and whammo. I can get the driver installed in SuSE 8.2 but when I try to dial in it freezes X, so if anyone has gotten one of these cheap ass modems to work, can they let me know what they did. 8.2 updated with KDE 3.1.4; result: NO antialising anymore

Hi, I've updated my 8.2 system with KDE 3.1.4 and see what happens.... no antialiasing anymore :-( Does anyone have a clue what this can be? When using the web interface and and reading an email with many attachments, is there a way to save them all at once? Or do I need to save them one by one? --Tony

cdrecord ignores speed=#...

Good day, cdrecord version 2.0, under SuSE Linux 8.2 Pro. I want to burn a CD-RW with 1X. No matter what speed I set, cdrecord ignores it and burns with approximately 4X (which is the media's burning ability according to its ATIP). Before the burn starts, cdrecord always says that it will burn at 2X, but the actual burning is always done with 4X I have tried to set the speed to 0, 1 and 2 to no avail. The environment variable CDR_SPEED is empty, and there is no settings file for cdrecord on the system. So there should not be any settings overruling my command ilne. It makes no difference if I burn as root or as a normal user. Under SuSE 8.1 cdrecord always honored my speed requests, with this very drive and with the same media. I have not found any usable solutions on the great internet. Has anyone got any ideas as to what might be wrong? Best regards :o) Johnny :o)

Appearance of Qt apps messed up by gnome-settings-daemon

Hi, the fonts in gtk2 apps (menus, dialogs, etc.) appear small and hardly readable, unless I have gnome-settings-daemon running. But... menus and dialogs etc. in Qt apps appear extremely large then. If I go to K Control Center > Appearance > Fonts and adjust the menu of, say, Opera to normal, then the menu fonts of Konsole are way too small. Setting this to normal make other menu fonts appear very large. Button text and dialogs in Opera are way too big and can't be changed. These are just a few examples. In short, gnome-setting-daemon messes up the appearance of Qt apps. I ended up _not_ using gnome-settings-daemon any more, and avoiding gtk2 apps wherever possible. The big unsolved mystery is: why do the gnome2 settings affect Qt??? Can it be switched off? S.H.
