Iptables Security questions

Suse 8.0 The discussion on iptables prompted me to look at my setup. I have never used Susefirewall. I lean toward a manual configuration. See below for the iptables modules running on my system. My knowledge of security is somewhat limited but I have three linux boxes all accessing the net through a gateway. If anyone can give me some pointers I will put them into action. Cron jobs eating memory

Howdy y'all My system: Athlon XP 1700+, 512M RAM, 30G HDD, DVD, CD-RW (partly for information partly to brag...) Well, I finally got around to starting to diagnose a problem that's been bugging me since I got this PC. It only has SuSE 8.0 Pro on it, and it's on 24/7 (of course, I mean who ever reboots?) The thing is I've noticed that when I come to it in the morning, I've normally lost about 200M of available RAM (ie free shows about 200M less as free on the -/+ buffers/cache line) This RAM does not become available again at any point, and top doesn't show anything consuming a load of RAM... The same thing happens of course the following night, and you can probably work out where this is going... So, yesterday I added a cron job to run free -m every hour on the hour overnight. The midnight output was: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 501 407 93 0 64 288 -/+ buffers/cache: 55 446 Swap: 1027 0 1027 And the 1am was: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 501 477 23 0 186 20 -/+ buffers/cache: 270 230 Swap: 1027 0 1027 At 2pm, the buffers/cache free entry was 232, where it remained for the rest of the night, so I figure it must be something in cron.daily that's causing this, the contents of my cron.daily is: weasel:~ # ls /etc/cron.daily/ . logrotate suse.de-clean-tmp .. medusa.cron suse.de-clean-vi clean_catman suse.de-backup-rc.config suse.de-cron-local clean_core suse.de-backup-rpmdb tetex do_mandb suse.de-check-battery updatedb Does anyone know of any of these that may cause this behaviour? Is there any reason why YOU can't use the UK mirror service at ftp://mirror.ac.uk/sites/ftp.suse.com instead of ftp.suse.com/ftp.gwdg.de/etc Reason is that it is extremely fast in the UK and make it quicker and easier for me to ensure everything is upto date. Regards Adam

Changing/Checking the Host ID

Dear All, I recently posted a problem with SCSI disks and I received the following reply: When using shared scsi make sure the hostid is different for both machines. There's a lilo (or at module insert time) boot parameter for this. Now I have a solution, but no idea how to implement it! Could someone please tell me (step by step - I'm a bit thick!) how I check what the host ID of my machines are, and if they are the same how do I change it! Many Thanks Mike

SCSI/LVM Disk Problem

Dear All, I have installed SUSE 8 on 2 computers. I have one SCSI disc which is connected to an Adaptec 29160 card in each host i.e.. Host 1 Host 2 \ / Shared SCSI Disk The system boots up fine. I have now used the LVM to create 2 logical volumes on the disk V1 and V2, both are reiser FS. I have mounted V1 on host 1 and V2 on host 2. Everything is OK when I write from one host, however when I start writing from the other host I get buffer write errors and SUSE locks up. Can any one offer any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong. Supplemental information. Device SCSI ID Disk 0 Card A 6 Card B 7 Thanks in advance Mike.

A more accurate look at the trends and stats can be found of course at: http://www.netcraft.com/Survey/Reports/current/graphs.html 1: Totals for Top Servers Across All Domains Apache leads M$ by over twice as much 2: Change in Server Numbers Across All Domains M$ leads Apache by just about 1/3 3: Market Share for Top Servers Across All Domains Apache leads M$ by over twice as much 4: Totals for Active Servers Across All Domains Apache leads M$ by over twice as much 5: Change in Active Server Numbers Across All Domains M$ leads Apache by just about 1/4 6: Totals for Active Servers Across All Domains Apache leads M$ by well over twice as much 7: Market Share for Active Servers Across All Domains Apache leads M$ by well over twice as much Though this specific graph set portrays severs rather that the actuall OS it can be derived (providing the data is accurate) that in categories 1,3,4,6 and 7 that Apache has an overwhelming lead/market share when compared to all other servers with M$ taking often well less than 1/3 of the remaining market. Now, to be accurate in these assumptions one should consider a point here. These statistics represent "webservers" over the actual OS they are running on. So, therefore, the statements by IDC may be accurate insofar as it is known the Apache is multi-platfrorm and does run on an M$ OS. However, it is clear, given this fact, that even if M$ OS is gaining market share their IIS servers take a distinct backseat to the perferred Apache webservers. One might be able to attribute this scenario to several reasons, such as those running an M$ OS may be doing so due to familiarity and training. But, still prefer to use Apache rather than an M$ webserver. So, it may also be derived from this that M$ webservers trail in use due to setup, stability, and security issue yet to be resolved. If one takes such reports as the number of vunerabilities and exploits between each server product and matches these against the number of needed patches and fix available and issued it can easily be construed Apache has A) less need for patching, B) patches and fixes are issued in a considerably more timely and efficient manner and C) patches and fixes issued create less secondary problems and issues once installed. In otherwords, M$ has had an inordinant amount of problems and issuance of patches and fixes are lengthy, numerous, exorbinant, and problematic as opposed to OSource wherein the same need for patches and fixes is markedly less and when needed are made available in a speedy and comprehensive manner. Furthermore, installing and implementation of patches and fixes for Apache and OSource create far less secondary problems and administrators choice in the preferred system is obvious by the data. Furthermore, I question the validity of this article insofar as the data to derive the statements by IDC are not available for review. DId this come from a single survey or study, or did it come from a set of multiple data sets? What demographics were used? Was this from an international data set or U.S./North American? These types of reports serve more the marketing departments that have a vested interest in having them published rather than providing a comprehensive and reviewable data set in which people can make informed judgements and decisions. This type of reporting is not accurate merely on the fact that there is no manner in which to confirm the reporters conclusion. Dual Boot Win XP - Suse 73

Hello, I would like to ask you the following question: I had previously on my system Win Me and Suse 73. I installed without any problem Suse 73 and I dual booted very well. After some time I upgraded Win Me to Win XP Professional and after that I upgraded also the C: drive to NTFS. Due to last install of XP I lost the ability to dual boot. It is a way of recovering my dual boot feature without losing or damaging C: drive and of course the data from XP ? I searched Suse database for an article but the solution refers to Suse 80 with XP. SuSe boot floppy for SparcStation 20 not working

Hi I just downloaded the boot floppy for SuSe on the SPARC platform, I used Rawrite for windows to create the boot disk and haven't had any issues in the past but in the past I have only made boot disks for other intel hardware. Here is the message I am getting when I try to boot from the floppy hopefully someone has run into this. ok boot floppy Boot device: /obio/SUNW,fdtwo File and args: Bad magic number in disk label Can't open Sun disk label package Can't open boot device

Hi My SuSEfirewall2 don't work properly, I don't know why. I need open this ports to enable Kazaa for my LAN. Thanks a lot. Hi There is at least 3 ways to do this. But in any case more information would be nice (protocol, source IP, destination IP etc..). Anyway: 1) You can insert a rule by issuing: "iptables -I INPUT -s <source-ip> -d -<destination-ip> --port 1080 -j ACCEPT" "iptables -I INPUT -s <source-ip> -d -<destination-ip> --port 1214 -j ACCEPT" This would open these ports for all incoming traffic, and does work immediatly, but after reset You need to do it again. 2) Just insert those port-numbers into FW_SERVICES_EXT_TCP="1080 1214", or the UDP one, depending of the protocol used, and run "SuSEconfig" This does work also after reset. 3) Edit "SuSEfirewall2" file by hand. (localtion depending on the SuSE version), and run "SuSEconfig" after it. This one works also after reset. Jaska. My department is currently into buying some PC-hardware to use for a new linux sub-network. We have been offered the stuff below for a reasonable price, and I'm interested in knowing if someone has had problems, or knows that there are problems, in using some part of this configuration for (SuSE) linux. Seagate Barracuda4 80Gb ATA100 7200rpm Gainward AGP GeForce4 MX440 64MB PRO/650TV/DVI Golden Sample or Inno3D GeForce4 MX420 64MB DDR Tv-Out We feel that it is important that the linux support for our hardware is more or less immediate, since we don't have the time doing too much of driver implementations ourselves. We do, however, appreciate if there is a possibility of using the most modern hardware available. (We had quite some problems with a configuration based on a SiS 962 chipset, which is obviously not supported by the current versions of the kernel.) Setting the _X_ default font size

I'm running Mathematica, and it opens with rather small fonts in the widgets. Since it doesn't listen to what the KDE says to do, the fonts don't adjust when I set my KDE options. There are a few other apps like this. Where does X get the idea that I want tiny fonts? Is there a config file I can hack to change the default font size. BTW, I have a ViewSonic G810, and SaX(2) has NEVER worked with this monitir. So if the answere is change it with SaX, I need to know what SaX changes. TIA, STH

Easy text-editor ?

Hey all, do any of you guys know of an editor that resembles the old edit.exe from the DOS days ? I frequently need to edit some form of text-file, and always end up doing it with a GUI editor. Don't suggest editors where everything is controlled using keyboard-shortcuts. Just a basic editor that has some form of menu where you can choose the functionality you want. Jacob

install uninstalled packages without cd?

i've just inherited a suse machine. it was probably installed from suse cd's, but i didn't get them. i want to run gnumeric and abiword, but they aren't already installed. i tried downloading the gnumeric rpm, but then it needs a slew of dependant rpms. is there a way to tell yast2 to download and install all the required rpms? or if not yast2, would it be right to run the install program to download and install the needed rpms? how exactly? thank you!

USB Webcam Affecting Sound

I have noticed with my USB webcam plugged in, the system seems to see it as a USB audio device. Kmix shows only one slider labeled USB Audio Class Driver. That is not much of a problem, since I use gamix for my mixer, and it works properly. The webcam also works properly. Sound in general works properly. I can play CDs, oggs, wavs, use xawtv, etc. However, for some reason mpeg videos do not have sound. Why would they behave differently? If I unplug the usb webcam, mpeg videos have sound and Kmix turns into a normal mixer. Any ideas why this would be? Has anyone else experienced this? The two systems that have done this for me are Red Hat 7.2 and SuSE 8.0. Would there be a way to unload the USB Audio Class Driver? Hi- I just recently installed Suse 7.1 Pro onto a Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop. The install went fine(in text mode), and the initial screen with TUx on it and the kernel selection list is there: linux, linux_2.4, suse, memtest86. Right now, I'm hitting ESC to boot into text mode as I haven't configured X yet. If I choose any of the 3 kernels listed: linux, linux_2.4 or suse, it goes through the normal startup procedures hw swap fsck mounts timezone syslog boot log pcmcia "all report back with green 'done'". Then : A big fat blank screen! I can hear the harddrive spin up and it blinks on occasion, but all I get is a blinking '_' in the upper left hand corner. No response from the keyboard, and no output is displayed. The BIOS setting are set to the defaults and there are no PCMCIA cards in the system. Crtl-Atl-Del does nothing to the system either. Oh, I can boot off of the floppy and load the rescue system, mount the filesystems(of my installed system), those look OK, lilo.conf looks OK. The 3 kernels are all the same size, sorry, didn't do a 'sum' to verify, the associated initrd's are different sizes, but again, any choice made produces the same result. Any thoughts? Thanks Ben and Togan, I did exactly what is described in the mail and in the FAQ. Still I can't view ttf fonts in Netscape 6.2 in SuSE 8.0 in a DELL Dimension 8200 with a flat screen monitor. I can use them in KDE applications such as KWord, and view web pages with ttf fonts in Konqueror - the KDE Webbrowser. Problem is in using or viewing with Netscape and SOffice. Hi I just upgraded my kernel from 2.4.16 to 2.4.19 and all the stuff i had in 16 is in 19 except for it doesnt seem to load the sound module i use to have it use to load smd-module-16 or something like that but not it cant seem to load it anyone know if this has changed in 19 on how to get it to work or is there some program that has changed i think it was using alsa if i am right any info or help please thanks Bob

Clinton, I had to install Suse without X11 because my screen shows vertical lines when starting sax and/or yast even when trying server vga16! I'm no trying xf86config. Broken MS Intellimouse Explorer (Optical)

Hi, My mouse (one of those nice silver MS explorer optical jobbies) is broken ... no I mean really. It doesn't work under Linux or Windows anymore. Naturally enough, as would any self-respecting computer phreak, I have a more than sufficient supply of ordinary rodents and fitted one (an ordinary Microsoft PS/2 wheelly mouse) which works fine in Windows but not in Linux. Hi all, I was just playing around with some 3d games and noticed they seemed jerky & slower. This just seems to have happened lately and I am wondering if the last patch we got for xf86 libs has caused it? I did all the usual checks to see if all the right files are being used, links to the right libs, etc and all is the same, no changes, no alterations. Direct rendering is still working, yet my FPS has gone way down. Running Gears confirms the slowness and jerky behavior. Any thoughts, suggestions, fixes or possible solutions? I had a similar, though apparently worse, problem with my Philips ToUcam: the usb sound driver would load and block the regular sound module. Hi Rohit I used truetype fonts. I had a bunch from a Windows installation that I copied over. I copied a set of truetype fonts that I had into the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts directory, then I ran: ttmkfdir | sed s/^[0-9]*// > fonts.scale.myfonts /sbin/conf.d/SuSEconfig.fonts xset fp rehash which created the encoding files. (I noticed that sometimes the fonts start to look screwed up again and SuSEconfig has replaced the first line of fonts.scale with a 0. Edit and change back to whatever is the first line of fonts.dir). However, there may be an easier way, which is: In the control panel you can install fonts using the System->Font Installer section. Select the folder that you have the fonts in for the left hand pane, and it will get installed in to the directory in the right hand pane. If you have an LCD screen, use sub-pixel hinting. I think thats all I did. SuSE 8.0 - installing new software via FTP with YaST2

I installed SuSE 8.0 yesterday on a box via FTP, from an FTP server that I have setup. After updating using the Online Update in Yast2, I cannot access my FTP server or the SuSE FTP mirrors using YaST2's "Install/Remove Software", to install other packages that were missed during the initial installation. I can access my FTP server via ftp client from the same computer but not with YaST2. I can change the media source to my FTP server or to a SuSE FTP site and it will display the package selections and I can choose to install any of the available packages, but when the computer tries to retrieve the packages the error "file not found on server or connection refused" appears with the correct FTP address and location of files. I can log into my FTP server anonymously with an FTP client without a problem and retrieve these same files and install them via RPM, but this is a hassle. This seems like a simple issue, so I hope someone else may have had this problem and may have a resolution. Thanks. Chris Goodnough

Wheel mouse puzzlement in 8.1

I upgraded my laptop from 8.0 to 8.1 and plugged a new mouse in at the same time. The new mouse has a wheel; the old one didn't. When I switch the XF86Config to "imps/2" (and zaxis "4 5") instead of "ps/2" the mouse pointer goes crazy when I move the rodent. Odd. If I leave it as "ps/2" I don't get wheel control, but otherwise it works. If I then go into YaST2->Hardware->Mouse Model and change it to "Intelli/Wheel mouse (aux port)" it works perfectly. Hurrah! Except when I reboot, it looses this setting and I have to do it again. Any ideas what's going on here? -- 8:52am up 62 days, 23:20, 2 users, load average: 0.20, 0.11, 0.03

Software Updates - Newbie question

I am new to Linux and using SuSE V8 with KDE 3, and have installed other software from the CD's. I am not sure that I am clear about software updates. I have used Yast2 to do the online updates (automatically) and these seem to be OK. However I notice that the Mozilla version I am using is V0.9.8 and yet The Mozilla site indicates V1.0.1 is the latest stable release for Linux. I had a look at the downloads area on SuSE and could only find Mozilla V0.9.8. My question is whether there is a SuSE area that has the later version for download, or can YOU get it? Similarly, I am using Samba V2.2.3a is there a later version available from SuSE? I see that V2.2.5 is the latest stable release. I don't normally bother with the "Hey, good job SuSE!" sort of threads, but as one who was vocal in the slamming of SuSE for the astonishingly bad text mode for YaST2 in 8.0... May I just say what a great job SuSE have done with the text mode of YaST2 in 8.1? We shouted and we screamed, they clearly listened, and have put in place a really decent text based interface. Menus that intuatively work with the arrow keys, etc., just like the now-not-so-lamented YaST1. I bow before them. Oh, and I love the profile management. I'm looking for a tool that allows me to accomodate text as well as formulas and pictures in the same document. Lyx is good for text and formulas but when I need to insert a picture I have to created it externally by some other tool save it in a file and then import it into Lyx ... this is the painful phase of the whole process as I could not find any Lyx feature to scale the picture properly ... I' experimenting with other programs. For the first time since I installed SuSE 8.0 I tried to run Ktexmaker2. The formula section of its menu bar keeps flickering causing a head-ache ... and most of the icons in its menu bar are simply greyed-out so insensitive to the mouse selection ... Is this tool still in beta-version or is there something wrong with my installation ? MEM

Hello susers, On my last email I told you I was experiencing problems with write/wall/talk. The problem with write and wall was about sgid of the executables... I was using /etc/permissions.secure, which disable the sgid for write and talk. Now, about talk, I discovered it is xinetd's fault. When I run talkd and ntalkd from the normal inetd it works great. Suse 8.0 Vmware 3.1.1 build-1790 Samba 2.2.3a-117 Samba client 2.2.3a-117 Has anyone come across this ? The Samba server will work ok for a while allowing me to save files from Vmware to my Linux filesystem. Then I get the failure below. Hi, Lately, my box developed this problem: Cannot install any rpm's with Yast or with rpm -Uhv (gives seg. fault). /var/adm/inst-log/installation-20020924-9 CD 1: ... With error Totally installed: 1 (1 noted for installation) With error: 1 ABORTED Yast startup script detects cdrom [OK]. So I have no idea what could that be? Cheers Peter

Finding Executable SUID Files

I was interested in using the find command to perform a search for the SUID attribute. troubles upgrading kde 3 to 3.0.3 on suse 8.0

Hi I installed SUSE 8.0 on my pc and I chose KDE 3.0 as GUI system. It works but it doesn't save any desktop settings - color, wallpaper and so on -: anytime I restart X it goes back to default setting. So I installed KDE 3.0.3 packages I found on SUSE site. rpm advised me that one package's missing... libmysql.so.10 . I didn't find it among suse kde3.0.3 packages of course and so installed it alone from suse dvd. then installed kde 3.0.3 forcing with --nodeps --force. Then I have new kde installed and now it keeps any desktop setting but tasks button, clock, internet connection icon and all the stuff on the bar EXCEPT the icon on the left had disappeared. I checked the control panel: all the object were selected. I tried to deselect and select them again: the bar each time was displaied newly but again without those things. I think the metter is that new files look for file configuration in the wrong place but it's just my idea. Please help me :( bye Blackimp :)

Everyone in my office runs Win2k except me, Suse 8.0. My firewall is a standalone box running RH 7.0. My boss asked me if there was a way to run an internal email server so that we didn't have to go to the outside to send email to each other. I said, "Sure, boss! I'll get right back to you." Now what? He wants to be able to get inter-office email as well as external email. The email we currently use is with our web-hosting service. What email program should I run and how do I set it up? Hi all! I'm having trouble with installing MySQL. I'm running SuSE 8.0 and I'm installing MySQL from the 8.0 distribution. For postinstallation I have tried to follow the instructiuons in the /usr/share/doc/packages/mysql/README.SuSE. MySQL didn't start. then I deinstalled MySQL an installed it again. This time I tried to follow the instructions in the MySQL manual. That doesn't work either. Before going into details what's wrong I want to know what is the correct way to install and to set up MySQL. Then I will follow those instructions and if somethings go wrong I will come back to ask for more specific help. TIA Nils-Olov

Hi. I'm trying to set up a webserver. I have an IP address but whenever I type it into a browser, I get the router page rather than my index.html file. How can I tell Apache to bypass the router and let me into /usr/local/httpd/htdocs/index.html instead? Thanks, Steve.

How to open up an *.exe file?

I have been having a lot of fun (lol, just realized what I wrote :) ) with the game Racer. I have dl'ed some cars, and one other track. Cars were zip files and hence no prob to unfold. However, the track is an exe file and I'm not sure how to get at the files/program in my Linux boxen. Been using Linux for just under 3 years and .exe files haven't really been an issue untll now. Is it possible to use .exe files in a Linux box? TIA, Curtis

...question I am trying to enable SSL for EMSIII and SuSE firewall I have forwarded ports 995 from the firewall to 443 of the email server III (which is on my intenal network) It seems not to work, I have enabled the EMSIII to use SSL from the Web Admin page. Is there anything else I am missing.

OT - AT&ATX PSU compatibility

Is it possible to run an ATX board from an AT power supply? I checked the pin setup on both, the only thing that's missing is the 3.3v, which I assume is for communication between the board and PSU which shouldn't be neccessary, since I would be switching the PSU on and off directly. After a new installation of SuSe 8.0 I am missing the configuration possibility for my TV card. Also the printer conf is not found. In order to speed up the installation, one of my memory sticks was defect and had to be removed which made the computer much slower, I first installed the minimum installation without KDE. After a nice sleep for the rest of the night I made my choice of KDE programs. Everything but a complete Yast2 is there where I expect it. As I wanted to configure my tv card I did not see the config button under hardware. Also the print config button is not there. What can I do in order to get these choices back? If I detect my hardware the TV card is listed. -- NTReader v0.36w(P)/Beta (Registered) in conjunction with Net-Tamer.

Hi. I've got Apache running and have opened up the http port using Yast 2. I know the IP of my machine but when I type http://addr.of.my.machine all I get is the login page to my adsl router. I expected to see index.php in /usr/local/httpd/htdocs. What am I missing? Suse 8.0.

It's not often I'm glad I made the wrong assumption, but this is one exception :-) 1. SUSE 8.0 Professional 2. When booting the installation CD, all I get is "An error occurred during the installation" after a while. I then try to use the manual configuration/installation and load the appropriate hardware modules, then choose "Begin installation" - same result. 3. I've gotten so far as to being able to get the installation "going" (i.e. I get to select software that should be installed), but after a while - the machine simply hangs. How did I get it to come that far? By using the "Manual" installation choice from the boot-up menu and adding this: "linux hwprobe=-bios.vbe,-braille,-mouse,-modem,-floppy,-ataraid, -parallel,-monitor,-misc,-usb,-serial,-isa.isdn,-modem.usb" Unfortunately, as I say above - the install program just locks up after a while (at different places). What's odd is that before I started doing all this, the machine was "happily" running RedHat 6.2 (which is what prompted the installation in the first place). YaST reports installed verion to be ImageMagick

I copied the contents of my 8.0 DVD to an anonymous smb share. I did a new install from this share. Any time I try to do anything with YaST, it gives an error that my source can't be older than the installed version. It lists the source version correctly as 8.0.0 but lists the installed version as ImageMagick. Any idea where it's getting this or how to change it? /etc/SuSE-release, /etc/ issue, /etc/issue.net all look OK Jason Joines Open Source = Open Mind ==================================================

Won't Mount

Under KDE and SuSE 8.0: When I click on the floppy drive icon, I get this message: Can;t find /media/hdd in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab The floppy drive is an ide drive that handles 120MB and 1.44 MB diskettes. It is set up as /dev/hdd and when I mount it manually, all goes well. MD5 passwords via NIS

Hi. I'm trying to get my Linux client (SuSE 8.0) to login to a BSD server (using MD5 passwords) via NIS. It is possible to do yp requests since all users on the BSD server show up at the SuSE login prompt on my Linux client, however logging in fails with the error 'Login failed'. So I gather password encryption on the BSD server and my Linux client differs. When installing SuSE on my client machine I chose DES as encryption for the passwords, and root as the only local user. To enable the Linux-client for MD5 passwords I first checked "Activate MD5 encryption for passwords" in the yast security module. That seemingly had no effect at all since logging in via NIS to the BSD server still doesn't work. So, I followed the instructions in the file /usr/share/doc/packages/pam/README.md5 and changed the local password for root to see if MD5 was used (to see if MD5 is used it should say $1$ first in the password field of /etc/shadow, right?). Well, logging in still doesn't work. Any ideas? /Anders

Mouse Problems

I've just been given a Microsoft Cordless Keyboard and Mouse (the wireless ones), which work well under *that* OS and reduce my desk clutter. The keyboard works fine (additional function keys excepted, which doesn't really worry me) under SuSE 8.0, but the mouse pins the cursor to the top of the screen when in X. Strangely, when running SAX2 to reconfigure the mouse, it works fine - it's only when tested under Gnome / KDE that is plays up. I've tried reconfiguring it as a generic mouse, a PS/2 mouse, AUTO, and everything else I can think of. The part number, for what it's worth, on the mouse is X08-41472 - it's their wireless scroll mouse with the two additional buttons on the sides... Anyone encountered these, or have any ideas what to try next ? All assistance much appreciated. Jon

Aye, but you are using technical arguments in your description of the problem. If a company has 400 users that use Outlook for their scheduling application, telling them that they are doing it wrong is not the way to move them over to a Linux environment ;) Being able to replace servers or server applications with free/stable/better alternatives is much easier if you can provide transparency in an existing client application environment. Until such a time comes that someone actually sits down and adds true Outlook- compatibility to a mail server, many many many companies will never replace their "beloved" Exchange server. I don't think it's a complete implementation, but nevertheless. And, besides outlook!=groupware. When people say they need outlook, actually they need groupware. Actually I did this about 2 months ago, first if you use Exchange for your users exmerge all there data to .pst files. Now configure your sendmail or qmail system and make sure you have IMAP working. Configure IMAP for Outlook so it connects against the new server and you might have to fiddle with the authentication type/process until you get connected properly. Then open the .pst file in outlook and copy all your emails so forth into your new LINUX email folders.
