Hi again, Exscuse me for top answering this... Well, I've decided to get a second HDD and install SuSE on it. Then some new questions occured to me. Can I launch SuSE with LILO in this case with WinXP (NTFS) on the first HDD. Where should I put LILO? In the MBR (HDD 1) or on the root partition on HDD 2? If the second, will LILO be made to start and have the option to start WinXP as well? I cannot erase the WinXP, as this is an issue of license and regulations. This is a so called "employer computer" with certain benefits in taxation, I buy it via my job and have to follow certain rules for three yrs. I don't bother to much that SuSE might not be able to see the NTFS disk in this case. Any thoughts on this? SuSE 8.0 and Dell Optiplex G110

I have the strangest network problem with SuSE and a Dell Optiplex G110 slimline desktop PC. Is anyone using SuSE on one of these? The trouble is that the network card stops responding to outside requests after about 15 minutes. When it first comes up, I can ping it, bring up the default web page, ssh, etc. However, after a short time, no pings, no web page, no ssh. Funny thing is that if I log onto the machine, it can still ping out and access the network. There are no error messages in the boot log or messages log. The PC has no firewall. The problem happens with the integrated 3Com NIC, which was then replaced with a 3Com 3C905B in the PCI slot, then replaced with an Intel Etherexpress Pro 100 in the PCI slot. Same problem. This seemed to eliminate any issue with the drivers. Then, I upgraded the BIOS to the latest (A08), turned off all peripherals, and all power management in the BIOS. Same problem. Then, I booted SuSE with "apm=off acpi=off". Same problem. I googled for similar issues and searched the SBD and Dell forums. No luck. I have exhausted all my resources. A test suggested by someone on the Oracle mailing list indicates that the filesystem does indeed support large files >2GB. The test was dd if=/dev/zero of=/some/path/to/big/file bs=1M count=2500 which created a 2.6GB file with no problem. Therefore the problem must be as you suggest, that gunzip can't handle this file. I'll have to check the gunzip version on the other machine to see if it is different and do a reality check. Kmail starts over and over again

Whenever I enter X, be it in kde3, windowmaker or any other window manager, kmail starts just before the window manager starts, and it is not in my ~/.xinitrc . When I close down kmail, it restarts a minute or so after. It is as though I were running a script " while [ true ]; do kmail &; sleep 60; done" ;=) "grep -r kmail .[a-zA-Z]* " doesn't give me any clues. I posted this to suse-kde(a)suse.com this Tuesday but got no answers, so I think this is a legitimate cross-posting. When i use gunzip file.gz, I eventually get the error File too large. When I use zcat file.gz > file, I get the error CRC check failed (although I know that this is not the case). I do, however, get a partial file that is correct, but not complete. If I do cat file.gz | gunzip > file as Tor suggested, then I get the CRC error check failed. I know that the file is gzipped correctly as it expands OK on the machine on which it was created. openssh problems (after vulnerability update)

hello everybody, environment: -SuSE 7.3 -using md5 passwords (overwritten /etc/pam.d/* files after install from /usr/share/doc/packages/pam/md5.config/*) -openssh-3.3p1-6 -using ssh version 2 (Protocol 2,1); for server and client --- problem description: after updating openssh due to recent vulnerability discovery, I no longer can ssh into machine; tells me "permission denied, try again" (as if the password wasn't good). however, public key authentication works as before, but it's not an option right now, as I have many machines, and having to create and copy the keys to be able to scp from/to every other machine isn't a practical solution (I have many users also) --- what I tried: tampering with /etc/pam.d/sshd with no luck changing /etc/ssh/sshd_config to read "Compression no" and "UsePrivilegeSeparation no" (those parameters seemed to be new in this updated rpm) any ideas/hints/comments? cheers, dragos

Kwintv failing to start after a reboot.

Hi Listers, I have an Sis 830 motherboard with onboard sound and graphics. Both the sound and graphics are of the accelerated type if that makes sense to you. Suse 8.0 Pro sees both of them and sets them up, it also sees my Wintv Go card and sets it up. After a reboot Kwintv fails to start up forcing me to enter Yast2 and reconfigure it, save the settings and then the program will start. It is the same for Xawtv, this also fails to start until a reconfigure in Yast2 (use xawtv for web cam). I remember seeing this on some earlier post but for the life of me I can not find it in the archives. Can some one point me in the right direction for the cure ? Clive
