SuSE 8 install hangs at braille display

There have been a few messages on this subject but so far I haven't found any answers. I have tried to install SuSE 8 on my computer and the install hangs just after it says that it is searching for a braille display. I called the SuSE tech support and was told that this is a know problem on just a few computers. The tech asked me to e-mail my hardware configuration which I did but I still haven't hear from the in more than a week. I also wrote to this list but haven't receive any responses. Even the safe install and the text install do the same thing. Can anyone help me with this? I have included a shortened hardware info. Thanks, that fixed it. If I boot with the drive plugged in, it does mount, but if I unplug it and then plug it back in, it works fine. Not perfect, but at least it works. Will look at the webites you mentioned, however, I downloaded the files from ieee1394.sourceforge.net and when I tried to gunzip, it says invalid file. Will try the download again. Automountd could be configured to automatically mount the partition when the disk is discovered, but I've not bothered with that. The problem I had was that the hotplugging only worked if ohci1394 was already modprobe(8)d, but not if sbp2 was. (I'm not sure why I didn't end up with just 'modprobe ohci1394' in boot.local, but it was probably to ensure that the scsi modules got loaded at boot time.) I think the latest 1394 code (from linux1394.sf.net) and hotplugging scripts (from hotplug.sf.net) *might* do boot-time hotplugging correctly, now, so that unplugging and replugging the cable would no longer be required, but I am not sure off hand. -JimC

Unable to gunzip a file

Hi all, I am unable to uncompress a file using gunzip that I gzipped from another machine. I am able to sucessfully gunzip the file on machine A, but not on machine B. Both machines are running SuSE 7.3, but machine B has kernel 2.4.16 while machine A has the original kernel that shipped with 7.3, kernel 2.4.10. I am trying to gunzip the files on an EXT3 file system which should support a file of this size, about 2.5GB uncompressed, and about 230MB compressed. I have been going nuts trying to install my scanner. I didn't know that if you run Yast from a user's screen, even though it requires the root passowrd, it doesn't work correctly! SuSE 8 - Do I need the windows partition?

I am groping my way through learning Linux, and have a small network of Windows NT PC's, with an ADSL connection. I now have SuSE Linux 8 installed on a PC connected to the LAN. This PC was setup with a small (2Gb) NT4 partition, and the remaining 18Gb for SuSE. I am still struggling with Samba, printing, and other issues, but can use Konqueror to browse the net from SuSE. I have a number of programs that I use under windows, they may or may not run under Linux using Wine...that remains to be tested. My aim would be to move totally to Linux if I can. Now the question is, do I need to keep the NT4 partition on this Linux box to be able to test my windows application software? John
