double entries in rc.config & sysconfig

Did something change in 8.0 ? When I run SuSEconfig it shows double entries like: /etc/sysconfig/security REJECT_ALL_INCOMING_MESSAGES=eth0 /etc/sysconfig/personal-firewall REJECT_ALL_INCOMING_MESSAGES=eth0 and /etc/rc.config INITRD_MODULES = "usbcore ext3 jbd" /etc/sysconfig/kernel INITRD_MODULES = "usbcore ext3 jbd" which of these are correct and is there a way to keep this from happening again? thanks, mike

OT: Mail Reply config

Hi, Why is it that when I hit reply the "recipient" (by default) is the actual sender of the e-mail and not the SuSE-E list itself? This is the second list I have come across that does this and I reckon I've sent about the same amount of e-mails directly to the senders rather than to the list (my apologies to those who have received direct replies in error) ... surely a simple list configuration change would stop this? Moi Jacob, Je had al een firewall lopen. Het volgende heb ik gedaan: - ftp server geïnstalleerd - apt-get geïnstalleerd - met apt-get alle geïnstalleerde software paketten ge-update-d - met apt-get kopete geïnstalleerd - X windows aangepast om externe verbindingen te accepteren - de firewall aangepast om ftp- en X verbindingen te accepteren Het is me gelukt om hier KDE op jouw pc op te starten via een externa X-sessie, maar de gegevensoverdracht was zo slecht, dat ik de sessie maar afgebroken heb. De uploadsnelheid van onze modems is maar iets van 16 kB/s. Om dat het mij dus te lang duurde, weet ik niet of konqueror nu werkt. Je moet zelf maar even kijken. Op dit moment werkt YOU (YaST Online Update), en het installeren van paketten in YaST niet. Dat is vreemd, want ik dacht dat het wél werkte. Ik weet ongeveer hoe ik dit kan oplossen, maar het is nu 22:25, dus doe ik dat een andere keer wel. Aangezien je nu apt-get hebt, heeft het geen haast om de YaST problemen te verhelpen. Werking van apt-get: In een root console: "apt-get update" haalt nieuwe paketbeschrijvingen binnen "apt-get -s upgrade" laat zien welke paketten ge-update-d zouden worden "apt-get upgrade" voert een update uit en haalt nieuwe paketten op van ftp.gwdg.de als je "apt-get upgrade" hebt uitgevoerd, moet je _altijd_! het commando "SuSEconfig" uitvoeren. apt-get is beter dan YaST wat betreft het installeren van paketten, omdat het de onderlinge paket-relaties beter beoordeelt. Heb je behoefte aan een GUI voor apt-get (GUI=Graphical User Interface), dan moet je het programma synaptic installeren. So it s really possible that the update causes problems.

Samba corruption and SuSE 8.0

Having replaced my old NT4 server at home (after it's boot disk died) with Samba running or SuSE 8.0 I've had 3 instances of files becoming corrupted when saved from my wife's Windows 2000 PC. What happens is that text documents appear to have random, but meaningful text appearing at random in the document. It looks maybe like Samba has picked this text up from somewhere else on the server's disk. The first time this happened I was running Samba 2.2.3 as supplied on the SuSE disks. I have since upgraded to 2.2.4 and this has happened twice since. SuSE is patched with the latest patches using Yast2. I connect to the server using smbmount from my SuSE PC and I've noticed no corruption neither have the kids from their PCs running Windows 2000. As my wife is more of a power-user than the rest of us, that could explain why the rest of us haven't experienced the corruption. Just to be sure I have re-built my Wife's PC including service packs and patches, but the problem has re-appeared since then. The Samba shares are located on a separate Reiser partition on my server, which is a dual PIII 450 on a Gigabit motherboard. Any thoughts / suggestions would be very welcome as i'm getting a lot of grief from my wife. TIA David Bottrill

Yast2 doesn't allow change of installation source media on Suse 8.0???

Hello all, I'm trying to install the Suse 8.0 from my hardisk (I downloaded the install files from the FTP server), but when the installation will begin I get an error messase saying that Yast2 couldn't mount the source midia (ie, a partition of my second disk)...this problem never happened with 7.3. I read in the list that Yast2 doesn't allow to change the source midia from CD to hard disk, is that true?? That would be a major bummer and contradicts the propaganda of 8.0 having the "easier installation ever"... Anybody please confirm? Is there a workaround for this if true?? Thanks. Rubens Oliveira

SuSE 8.0 - YaST2 Won't Run in Graphical Mode Anymore

OK, I'm stupid. I removed some rpms yesterday in an effort to solve a problem I was having, one of which was the qt-non-mt stuff. Since then, YaST2 works fine, except that it only runs in character mode... it won't start in graphics mode. I have looked through log files I could find but don't understand why this is happening. I have since reinstalled the qt-non-mt and did a forced reinstall of ALL the yast2 rpms, but it's still the same... no gui. Is there a place where the failure would be logged?
