GPM and IntelliMouse?

GPM (console mouse program) is not working properly under my SuSE 8.0 installation. When I move the mouse to the top of the screen, it copies and pastes continuously. This is with an IntelliMouse. The middle button and wheel work fine in Xwindows. Any ideas what's wrong? Peter Taylor

Wizzards and wunderkinde and anyone else w/ some real knowledge , short setup: Still having some problems w/ the Plywel "purose built" computer .. which began life running NT4 ( bleah!) and recently , because of some really odd behaviour, they had me send the box back for a retrofit .. well a rebuild , really .. replaced Mboard, scsi card athlon chip, ram and, even the power supply, they also replaced ( twice!) the hard drive .... and , because The bigger Bosses present , they understood it wasn't NT but Linux it was going to be used for. Sometimes it does help to rant a bit .... Anyway , they send it back adn it still wont boot, so it maeks anotehr trip to the left coast and this time, they make certai it will boot by loading linux on it !! ( small moral victories help moralle <G>) The a few weeks later, the floppy drive lost it's tiny mind... couldn't open it, couldn't even tell if there were a disk in it! Sooooo, we call and complain.. and they decide to ship a drive here to have one of their local guys install once it arrives.. it gets here, dn the installer does his thing ... teh computer being off all this time... he leaves, Gil ( spouse) decides to check to see if the thing actually works, he boots the box, and suddenly ... problems ..... the desktop took more thn 15 minutes too hsow up, and when it did , nothing worked as it had before. He'd noted that the xconsole message kept repeating that there were errors that he hadn't seen before... back to the Polywell folks. They had a guy "walk him thru the connections of all the drives etc.. and decided that most likely Linux was at fault, esp as it doesn't have a "Go BAck" feature !!! ( okay, stoi laughing now <G>) one of the things that turns up in the dmesg that bothers ME is: I/O error: dev 08:03, sector 390272 vs-13070: reiserfs_read_inode2: i/o failure occurred trying to find stat data of [84619 84627 0x0 SD] scsi0: ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: 0x28 00 00 1a ca 95 00 00 08 00 Info fld=0x1aca97, Current sd08:03: sns = f0 3 ASC=11 ASCQ= 0 That's all new stuff since the floppy drive replacement.. and it repeats ad infinitem : can anyone provide me w/ a translation ?? what do I need to do to fixor it? OR is it one of those things I can safely ignore? ANd if I can ig that... how do I fixor my long loading slooooooow building desktop? w/o reinstall , which seems to be a rediculious suggestion , esp when they suggest I load XP !! I know there are a number of strange "statements" in the dmesg that are arcane stuff left over fro various programmers ... apparently... ( I don't speak program so I've no clue <G> ) Feel free anyone to send a private message to me and I'll send you the entire file .. tho why you'd want 9 pages of repeated data I don't know.... We aim to please tho.. <smile> j afterthought Age is a very high price to pay for maturity.

Qt3 Designer causes Segmentation Fault

I have SuSE 8.0 with all the latest Qt3 and KDE3 packages from the SuSE web site. When I launch Qt's Designer to design dialogs it shows the splash screen and then seg faults. Bummer. Now I can't write KDE apps anymore. Anyone else with the same experience?

Couldn't install SuSE8 (ftp version) to Dell Opt Gx240

Hi, Today (night actually), I tried to install SuSE 8 (ftp version) to Dell Opt Gx240 at my lab, but fail. The machine spec is: - P4 1.6 Ghz - 256 RAM - ATI Rage 32 MB - HD Maxtor 6L020L1 20 Ghz, ATA 100 - CD ROM, Zip drive, floppy disk My hardisk structure is: hda1: Primary partition, NTFS (Windows Xp), about 7 GB hda2: Empty primary partition, this will be the mount point "/". Size is about 3 GB. hda3: Extended partition. Size is about 8 GB. During installation, this is displayed as "Win95 Extended (LBA)" (or something similar). hda4: Empty logical partition, this will be "/home". Size is about 3 GB. hda5: FAT32, this is where SuSE installation sources reside (D:\installer\suse8). Size is about 4 GB. hda6: Linux swap partition. Size is 1 GB. The installation steps: 1. Boot from bootdisk. 2. Load additional filesystem modules from module disk 1 (NTFS module). 3. Chose "manual installation". 4. When "choose installation media", chose "hardisk", then selected "hda5". 5. A dialog box asking for directory where installation sources reside, I filled with "/installer/suse8" (without double-quotes of course) 6. The installer performed automatic detection, all hardware are detected (zip drive, usb mouse). 7. A page appear, listing a number of possible customization (partition, where to install lilo, etc). 8. I chose "partitioin": the default/detected by SuSE installer was: format hda6 as swap. format hda4 as reiserfs, and mount to "/". mount hda1 to "/windows/C" mount hda5 to "/windows/D" 9. I modified the partition setting as following: a. format hda2 as reiserfs, and mount to "/" b. format hda4 as reiserfs, and mount to "/home". 10. Proceed with installation. The installer format the necessary partition. 11. And then, I got 2 similar error messages: a. Could not mount partition /dev/hda2 to /mnt/" (continue, abort, retry). b. Pressing "retry" will only repeat the error messages, so I chose "continue" 12. Then the following error message: a. "Could not mount partition /dev/hda5 to /mnt/windows/D" (cont, abort, retry) b. Pressing "retry" will only repeat the error messages, so I chose "continue" 13. After that, I was brought to the first page of installation again -- the text mode one with options such as: Boot/Exit, Power Off, Start Installation, etc etc. At step 8, I have tried to make installer not to mount hda1 to "/windows/C" and hda5 to "/windows/D", but I still got the similar error. I've also tried to format hda2 and hda4 with both ext2 or ext3, but still failed. I wonder what could be wrong? Do I need to change the partition structure (which is unlikely, cause there's already Windows XP)? Any help would be appreciated. Pro-Office will not install

OK I have a CD labled Pro-office which dropped through the door this morning. The notes say Run 'Patch CD Update', but on mine that fails to find the CD. I think the problem is that I have a DVD, and a CDWriter and neither of them are accessed as /dev/cdrom. SO how do I get YaST to look at a different location for the Patch CD? or map /dev/cdrom to on of the physical drives -- Lester Caine ----------------------------- L.S.Caine Electronic Services

One problem though,I did this, but then found nothing after typing "java -version" First i went to root/etc/sysconfig/java and changed this symbolic link. CREATE_JAVALINK="no" I then did rm /usr/lib/java ln -s /usr/local/j2re1.4.0 /usr/lib/java Lastly I had to do the following: 1."export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2re1.4.0.01 2."export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH My only problem with suse 8.0 so far.I'm not sure what the redundancies if any of my steps were, but LimeWire works. (not meant as an insult for the Deutche) but this sucked and the manuals are useless brochures nothing more. I gave them to my kid to cut-up and use now a 6.4 manual: a great linux book. And yes i checked all the help files too.The Gnuttella forums were a bloody nightmare with pranksters giving 3 page bash instructions on how to create a Desktop link to the app.in SuSE(very funny stuff) It would be helpful to have a list of SuSE peculiarities. I think they are here on this very helpful list already though. Unfortuanetely i don't even like the LimeWire product now that it finally works and may try GTK Gnutella. Doing the above should get this product working and or update java.

ARTS - CPU overload error

Hey all, Recently artsd has been shutting off with the error "CPU overload". It doesn't seem to matter what I'm running. It'll do this at random times even if no sound is being processed. I've even tried logging into KDE3 and not starting up any extra programs, just KDE with a few applets (none sound related). The CPU Overload error/shutdown of artsd occurs very randomly... sometimes within a minute of starting KDE, sometimes up to two hours before it occurs. I also have KDE set up so no sounds play except when KDE starts up or is shut down. Even shut off the system bell for the Konsole. I can see when it's going to happen because the CPU monitor applet suddenly shows heavy CPU usage. I've used kpm to see what's running and I see nothing that would be making Arts do this. But artsd itself will show heavy system usage when this occurs just before it shuts down. I'm using the latest KDE3 RPMs taken from the SuSE server, which includes arts-1.0.1-13.rpm . (Using SuSE 7.3 Pro) To make matters worse, if I "artsd start" after this happens, it'll start fine, but all sounds are choppy when I do this so it's useless. And eventually at some random point it will do a CPU overload again. But leaving KDE and logging in again will restart arts without the choppy-sound problem. 1) Is this an arts issue, an issue with this particular RPM, or what? Where do I start to look in determining the problem? I'm almost certain this didn't start happening until I installed the latest build of that particular RPM, but I can't say that for certain. 2) Seems odd that starting KDE (and thus it starts artsd) doesn't cause choppy sounds, but if I do "artsd start" it gets choppy. This happens even if I "artsd stop" then start it again, not just after a CPU overload issue. Does KDE set some specific options for artsd when it starts arts itself that I should be doing as well? OGG or mp3 ENCODING ADVISE

Dear List, What encoders do you recommend and where to get them? I am getting ready to rip my CD to OGG or MP3; I'd like to compare them and then choose, but I do lean towards OGG. I do NOT find any encoders on the 8.0 dist. Where are they or where should I look elsewhere? I am able to ri[p ok. Thanks! .......PeterB
