MIDI question

My MIDI sound is not working with my i815 soundchip and SuSe 8.0. I have downloaded the upgrade and configurated it with alsaconf, but it's not working more, the driver is the correct one, the snd-intel18x0.o. Only the PCM sound is OK, timidity is working fine. With Mozilla, it's strange: if the link is a direct link to a MIDI file, it's working, but if the MIDI file is linked with an embed tag in the code of the page, all i get is a little comment at the bottom "running helper..." and no sound at all. If i try with configuration, son, MIDI in the kdm menu, i get at i have no MIDI port. In the config menu, sound, mixing console is not working at all. Kmidi is working but i can see the leds taht go up and down, but i hear nothing. With kmid, it's worse, i get only a crash with signal 11 from it or kdm. I'm sure at it must be a possibility to have the seuquencer working. I have proved with timidity as server, but i don't now how i must configure the MIDI ports to have them to work, all i get is a message like what timidity was working and att it was 2 Midi ports, but back in configuration, sound, midi, nothing is here.. Short range connection

Just speculating... Does a technology exist that can connect two locations that are some 2-300 meters apart without using teleserverices? The two locations are not visible from each other, so laser or similar is not an option. The bandwidth demand is very small, so the solutions should be very inexpensive. Anything like that?

[OT] Pro Office (upgrade) cd in NL+BE

Hi all, I think it's off-topic, and maybe even not allowed (if it's forbidden to post this, plz let me know and forgive me) .. It's very often a little bit difficult to get a cd like this new upgrade and Staroffice in Holland and Belgium. Especially if you don't have a credit-card .. Linuxbelgium (http://linuxbelgium.net) is selling it for Holland and Belgium .. and also the upgrade version of Suse 8.0 :) ps: I think this cd upgrade cd is a very good idea, especially for the people without broadband access. Piping dd and tar AND gzip

I am copying an image with dd if=/dev/hdc1 of=/image Now, I would like to pipe this in order to get this image tgz'ed in ONE task. appending | tar -cz does not work. CD-RW installation problems

SuSE 7.3 2.4.16-4GB kernel I have a Mitsumi CR-480ATE CD-RW drive. I've followed the directions in the CD-Writing HOWTO, but it does not work. SuSE Pro 8.0 - tin 1.4.4 followup sender

Hi, i try to setup my newsreader tin ... trying to post or followup an article to a newsgroup tin always gives me the sender 'me@localhost' ... the problem is that I am subscribed to this group via ISP ... so I want tin to use my email-address ... so in /etc/sysconfig/mail I set # # From:-Line in email and News postings # (otherwise the FQDN is used) # FROM_HEADER="oliver(a)isp.de" ... but it is not recognized by tin. I searched mainly the INSTALLATION file and the man pages from tin and found only one thing (INSTALLATION): [...] If the remote server supports NOV overview indexing, then tin will retrieve overview data on the fly using the NNTP XOVER extension. Otherwise tin will create its own NOV style index files on the local machine for each user in $HOME/.tin/.index Many machines require the name of the news gateway machine or the news domain to be set via the --with-domain-name configure options. This is true of both NNTP and local news systems. [...] I am running SuSE Pro 8.0 (most standard except sendmail.cf), tin 1.4.4 and INN 2.3. So how do I maintain the package tin/configfiles to get my sender to oliver(a)isp.de ... and why shows the FROM_HEADER= no affect to tin. Apache 2.0 RPMs for 7.3

Hey, Anyone know if there are RPMs for Apache 2.0 for SuSE 7.3 available anywhere? Or will an RPM for Apache 2.0 work if it was packaged for another distro? I seem to be having a heck of a time installing by tarballs for some reason, though I'm trying still. At the least, does anyone have Apache 2.0 working on 7.3? If so, did you use an RPM or tarballs? And if tarballs, did you encounter any difficulties? Also, is it a good idea to uninstall 1.3 before installing 2.0? (Saving configuration files, of course.) I know some programs have issues with upgrades. FWIW, I have the Apache RPMs from the 7.3 distro (version 1.3) working fine. It's just that 2.0 has some different features I want to experiment with. My Apache setup is home-use only, for testing CGI scripts and such before sending to my web host... which uses 2.0. sux - fails with new ssh

I installed the new ssh (via YOU) yesterday and am now seeing a problem with "sux -". Scenario: 1. New ssh on on both the remote (SuSE 8.0) and the local (SuSE 7.3) system. 2. All ssh config files are copied from the "*.rpmnew" versions created by the install of the new ssh EXCEPT that "X11Forward yes" is enabled. (I get the same problem using my original ssh config files from before the update.) 3. Log in to the remote system via ssh. 4. From the shell now running on the remote system attempt to switch to root with "sux -". 5. The following error is shown: > sux - Password: No matches found, authority file "/dev/fd/62" not written xauth: (argv):1: unable to read any entries from file "(stdin)" # "su -" works without the above error but then I can't launch X applications: > su - Password: # export DISPLAY=:10.0 # /opt/mozilla/mozilla Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: localhost:10.0 I am not sure if it is the new ssh that has done this to me but I did just install the update and both the above scenarios worked fine yesterday before the update. -- Robert C. SuSE and LUGs

Anybody know if SuSE has any kind of program or relationship with Linux User Groups? The local OCLUG (Ottawa C_____ Linux Users Group) was large and active, the last time I looked, but they were all using RH, Debian, Mandrake or several lesser-known distros. Hardly anyone admitted to running SuSE. It seems to me that having a connection with LUGs would be a useful marketing tactic for a Linux company. Sponsor some 'install-fests', maybe provide some speakers for their major gatherings, put up some door-prizes... By the way, everyone over here pronounces it "Suzie" (when they mention it at all, which is rare...), though I understand the purists insist on "susuh" or "suseh". That might be a slight marketing barrier right there, unless SuSE were to play it up and make a bit of fun with the name, to get us Nordamericanos talking about it. /kevin (in Ottawa, Canada)
