Apache problem in SuSE 7.2 (worked in 6.4)

Hi, I'm having a problem with a web server that I have just switched over from using SuSE 6.4 to 7.2. The machine was wiped and re-installed with SuSE 7.2 from scratch. Everything is working fine apart from one thing. I'm trying to password protect a directory on the web site. I've changed httpd.conf to allow .htaccess overrides (AllowOverride All). I've put the following .htaccess file in the directory I want to protect: Deny from all AuthType Basic AuthUserFile /usr/local/httpd/passwords/adminpass AuthName "Admin Tools" Require valid-user Satisfy any I've also used htpasswd to create the 'adminpass' file in the correct directory. All the file permissions have been checked and are correct. Everything worked fine with these settings under SuSE 6.4 (Apache 1.3.12). Using SuSE 7.2 (Apache 1.3.19) the password request box appears as it should, but access is always denied when entering the correct username and password. Does anybody know what the problem could be? kmail crashes

Hi all I've just dl and installed kde 2.2 from the SuSE ftp site. On a whole it seems to work fine but when I try to configure kmail it crashes. I've attached the console error messages in a file called kmail.log. Would be grateful if anyone had any ideas about what is going on and how to correct it. My apologies if this has already been dealt with. I've been away on holiday and am slowly trying to catch up (only got 1900 messages left to get through) :) TIA eddie

Sound, Oggvorbis etc

Suse 7.1 kernel 2.4.4 kde 2.1 Soundblaster 16 Re my re earlier post.............recording Vinyl LPs and encoding with Oggvorbis. Is DAP (Digital Audio Processor) the best program to do this ? This was on the Suse disks. I am looking for something to record uncompressed to AIFF format from which I wish to encode to Oggvorbis. Trials have been ok, but DAP is not easy to use ....and can be unstable at times. Any suggestions appreciated Brian Marr

It's always shocking when I hear experienced computing colleagues casually mention how they've just reinstalled a brand new system because they loaded the wrong drivers for their printer or digital camera. I have a friend who is a corporate 'expert' on Windows and managed 4 reinstalls of W2K in the first week as he tried to sort out the various driver issues on his new system! When I tried to suggest that it was indicative of how inferior Windows is he became extremely annoyed (although he hasn't got much hair left to tear out after all his windows troubles). Tim Harrell

Packages for Koffice

I am trying to insatall Koffice 1.1. I am using SuSE 7.2. and I have no get my system messed up me KDE system, I can not get my Kmail and Knode to start. I have downloaded Koffice and kdelibs from SuSE downloads site. When I innstalled Koffice it must have a file called libkdeprint.so.0, downloaded kdelibs, but this must have libksasl.so. How many packages do I have to download to get this things work!!!!!! Gunnar

SSH Keys Continued

Hi everyone, Thanks for your suggestions on getting my SSH key working properly. I still do not seem to have it working. I might note that my version of ssh-keygen does not seem to support the "-t" option. I can't figure it out. My one shell account had a little control panel to help configure SSH, and by copying my public key over there and feeding the program my IP address, I was able to log in without my password. However, on my main shell account (which doesn't have a program like that), I cannot get this to work. Both servers are RedHat Linux-based, and of course I'm running SuSE (7.1). Upgrading to kde 2.2 will break Red Carpet, btw. Red Carpet doesn't know anything about rpm-4.0.3 yet. It will eventually but who can say when? Well I wish we could have warned you about kde 2.2. New Files

Ok, for everyone wondering if the newly updated files in KDEbase on the SuSE site are worth downloading, my vote is YES! Looks like they have fixed most if not all the little problems introduced in the last versions. There should be only 6 files needed by most that are staying on the edge! ;-) Looks like the problems with aRts are gone, and several nice new things have been added. I usually wait until I see what others say about the updates, being mr. safety, but I took the plunge this time as SuSE is one of the best to really test the programs before making them available to us. GIMP-Print & CUPS

As I was looking over the CUPS installation files in Yast2, I notice there is about 25mb of printer drivers also. Are these printer drivers the same ones that come with GIMP-Print, which also uses CUPS or is GIMP-Print a whole other world of drivers specifically for GIMP? CUPS sounds very nice and I like the sound of level of control you have, but GP sounds good too and very beneficial when using GIMP!
