.htaccess (almost)

After an embarassing amount of time spent, I am appealing to the list for help. I have a minimal install of SuSE with Apache/mySQL/PHP4 and some libs set-up. This all works fine. I tried to use .htaccess to protect a directory, and I'm pretty sure I did everything right- I found several web tutorials, and they are all similar and fairly straightforward. I read everything at apache.org and even some Mosiac docs. The directory challenges me, my little "message" shows in the box and changes when I change it. I edit the files and do an apachectl stop/start to toggle the server. I get the same error after a third failed attempt: "Authorization Required -This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required." I've fiddled pretty hard with both .htaccess and .htpasswd. I've changed those two files ownerships from root to wwwrun to nobody to root again. I thought I set the Apache logs to "debug" but they don't seem to be recording too much. What kind of problem might I be up against? Thanks!

Adding devices to Konqueror SideBar

Hello, When using Konqueror as file browser at your left there is a sidebar with some trees. There you see home folders, root folders, bookmarks, DEVICES, and so on... Inside devices tree there is CD, Floppy, and my Windows FAT partition. When I click on them, they are mounted... Ok, I want to add some more devices as I have a SCSI Jaz drive and a USB camera that sometimes I plug and mount as filesystems. Where is the configuration to add new devices to the sidebar tree??? Thanks.

bogus cluster size

Booting Suse 7.2 I get everytime and again a failed message on the screen. Looking for the reason I found that "fatfs bogus cluster size is " is the start of a search for a fruitless search. Linux is trying to do something with a "dev 16:41 " device. How can I get rid of the failure message and of the bogus cluster size (whatever that may be ;-))

Very easy question on ulimit

ulimit looks just easy to use but... "-c sets the maximum size of core files created" what is a core file? "-l sets the maximum size that may be locked into memory" What is it? "-m - the maximum resident set size" What is it? "-s the maximum stack size" Is this the maximum stack size of a single program, right? "-t maximum amount of cpu time in seconds" In seconds? Seconds in a minute, or what else? Thanks in advance, Tazio

ckfs vs scandisk

I dual boot between Win98 and SuSE 7.1. occasionally, (like 4-5 times per day) Windows will lock-up. upon reboot I might choose to boot to Linux instead. Is there a need to run ckfs in Linux before accessing the Windows partition? Also, if I do check the filesystem, do I still need to allow windows to finish it's scandisk the next time I boot to windows? now some follow-up questions: What are the differences between the two utilities? What are they actually checking for? How does the system detect that the drive has or hasn't been scanned? I assume there is some sort of flag set on a clean shutdown from the message "check forced" on a Linux boot. Can ckfs reset this flag on a windows disk when doing a scan? gaim

I downloaded the lastest gaim-0.11.0pre15-1 and I am having a dependency problem. Needs libgdk_pixbuf.so.2. All other dependencies have been satisfied. I could not find this on the suse 7.1 disks, but found it doing a ftp search on the net. I now need to know where gaim looks for this file. I have tried putting it in /usr/lib/xxx, but still have the dependency problem. Does anyone know where gaim looks for this file? thanks in advance Nevada

Might be something with this: --- printer.c: Disabling reads from problem bidirectional printer on usblp0 printer.c: usblp0: USB Unidirectional printer dev 2 if 0 alt 1 hub.c: already running port 2 disabled by hub (EMI?), re-enabling... usb.c: USB disconnect on device 2 --- Try to change the port on the USB hub you are using. It could also be a problem with your printer. I believe you would be better off using the 2.4.x kernel with USB instead of the 2.2.19. Hi List, I have finished installed Suse 6.1 and i noted that it's running pretty much slow some apps. Even Yast , Sax take a long time to start . What could this be ????
