Asus GeForce3 V8200 Deluxe install problem

Hi, Has anyone installed Asus GeForce3 V8200 Deluxe on SuSE 7.1? I have installed the newest NVIDIA drivers and installed XFree 4.0.3. But Sax2 does not find the card, and I can't get the Xserver running. Anyone knows what to do here? Regards, Jostein Berntsen

Latest nvidia drivers

Hello Yesterday, I installed the latest drivers from nvidia (1251), got the SuSE RPM's of their site, and an hour or 2 later, I was up and running... But when I log into X, log out, and try to go to a text console, by screen goes either blank of gets strange colors on it. I can't do anything but go back to X and reboot. I heard people on the list having this problem in the past, but I thought this was fixed from the 1.0 version? Any other victims? Or anyone know a fix...

hi folks Thanks to all those who unswered directly or on the list. But my thread got removed instantly. What's the coverup? I now believe the four Germans I saw here in FL. They work for Siemens and they told me they never run SuSE. Instead they use Solaris. When I asked about SuSE, they told me few people care about it in Germany. Their boss gave me his email address. I think SuSE is for America's markets. Sorry anyway. thanks

Can't compile KDE progs with 7.1

I have tried several times to compile KDE programs but failed miserably. ./configure works without complaints but when I try a make they stop at en error that it can't find some includes. So I try with ./configure --with-extra-includes=/opt/kde2/include/ now it goes on for a while and then spews out a lot of comments like: /opt/kde/lib/libkdeui.so: undefined reference to `QString::find(char, int, bool) const' and then collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[2]: *** [libkradioapplet.la.closure] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/bygg/KdeRadioApplet/src' make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/bygg/KdeRadioApplet' make: *** [all-recursive-am] Error 2 And then stops. Can someone help me with this? I'm using KDE2.1 Olle Viksten

searching for good WINDOWS security list

I know I may get flamed here but I do use windows as much as I wish not to....so I am searching for a LIST about windows security. I think I may have a Trojan bot on my machine...akkk, they are like harpies (not herpies but harpies the little baby monsters), and Windows seems to be very susceptible to any germ out there..... PS I know I can set up my linux box to sniff at my windows box... how would I do a thing like that. I was hoping to have a direct link from the WIN to the LINUX for the task...what do I use on the linux box? nmap? I read about that someplace...any other tools? Thaanks... This is why I think I have a bot/Trojan, the first 2 lines, tcp port 1080 and 5000 and 139... they are up even when I have no IP assigned to my NIC, they are always there... and I have no idea is what is going on at those ports. I have a fire wall, Zonealarm and a linksys 4 port router that supports NAT...okay okay I am new to this stuff ....lol...but it's fun in some sick and twisted way that I can not figure out. Permission Probs

Hello, I have managed to get my permissions goofed-up to the point where the machine will no longer finish booting. I get a stream of "permission denied" errors at most every step of the boot-up process. Is it possible to set permissions back to default status? Please tell me there is....... Thanks, Tom

Hello, When I first installed SuSE 7.1 on my gateway, just to check out the cool features on KDE I went for 'Default with Office' Installation. But I don't need it anymore(GUI on Gateway, yuk?). Is there any way I can go to minimal install from 'Default with Office'? Thanks, Sundar

Samba 2.0.8

Dear All I have sent this message to various Australian Samba lists for more than a week. I have not received a reply. I'm hoping that someone can answer my question....... After trying to work this one out for two days I've given up and thought I'd try the internet for more sensible answers. I've set up an SuSE 7.1 Intel based computer to operate as a Samba server for a Win 98 network. I did all of the diagnostic tests that are described by Andrew and this is what came back....... testparm smb.conf shows that nothing is wrong anywhere. .... smbclient -L BIGSERVER reveals....... " session setup failed: ERRSRV -ERRbadpw (Bad password - name/password pair in a Tree Connect or Session Setup are invalid.) " I get the same result from ..... smbclient '\\BIGSERVER\TMP' When I try nmblookup -B BIGSERVER__SAMBA__ the screen locks up until I do Ctrl+c. Anyone suggest what this might be about ? Another clue is that if I connect the Samba server to the network and open up Network Neighborhood in Win 98 I can see that all of the computers have disappeared from the window. I would send in smb.conf but I'm afraid that there isn't a floppy drive on this machine and the CD-ROM will shortly be going somewhere else. No connection from this box to the internet either. Can't find a single thing wrong with the SuSE 7.1 installation. Shadow passwords are working as is everything else. Thanks -- Richard

GUI experience

At our USERLUG meeting Friday evening we had planed to demonstrate a comparison of desktops along with a discussion of laptop installs and associated problems. The idea was to have two video projectors running two different distros/desktops simultaneously, with a total of three different combinations. But as the best laid plans can go awry, our did, and we had only two laptops and ONE projector. We started off with the projector, a BoxLight (forgot the model), connected to a Toshiba 4020CDT running RedHat 7.0 and the Ximian GNOME 1.4 desktop. The demo went well until it was time to switch to my Compaq 12XL430 running SuSE 7.1 and the KDE 2 desktop. I also wanted to demo the Corel Office and Corel Draw Suites running under wine. All was up and running well until we unplugged the projector from the Toshiba and plugged it into my running Compaq box. At first all was O.K. until I tried moving the mouse. This caused the video output to go bonkers first splitting the display into halves and left / right reversign the halves, then going to just lines of color, to bouncing to solid purple and back. In the process this totally locked up my box and we had to do a pull-the-plug type of shutdown to restart. In the process this killed wine and I could not ever get it back up. Upon returning home I played with it for a while, even did a couple of reloads but to no avail. Then this morning I got the bright idea of running from the shell vice from desktop icon links. That's all it took, I was immesiately told that I needed to remove the socket file from my /home/..../wineserver-lnux directory. I did that and zazoom, all worked as advertised. Sometimes this graphical stuff isn't all its cracked up to be. dave

I too am running the newest nvidia drivers, and am experiencing something I don't quite understand completely. It may be a "bug" or an Operator Error (P.L.B.C.A.K.). I can use ALT+F2 to switch to a another console (In KDE), but when I try to switch back with ALT+F1 All I see is the messages on a black console (My X-session doesn't come back up). Now I can use CTRL+ALT+BCKSPC to end the x-session but That closes all open tasks. I suspect that my trouble is ignorance of the proper proceedure to return to the x-session after switching consoles. Anyways heres the data. 800MHz P-3 128 MB 133MHz RAM Viper 770 w/ 32 MB 7.1 Pro X-4.0.3 KDE-2.1.1 Nvidia's latest drivers installed as directed by site. Plea for hands-on help.local

I have had a problem with using the efnet irc network. none of the servers will now accept me. I am running ident, but it sitll doesn't work. Perhaps the problem is ident.conf? i dunno. I am also behind a firewall on my dsl router. Port 113 is listening but I dont really know how to find out more than that. My apt mate uses mirc in win98 and can get in. i can't. I live in Argentina, and the prices are.. license for win2k professional U$S 28 license for win2k advanserver (25 clients) U$S 800 license for win2k advanserver (25 clients) + 25 license for win2k professional U$S 1200 i don't know the rest of the prices, but office 2000 is about U$S 700 In the place i work we had to look for some prices because they had a lot of "unlicenced" software and they wanted to clear they situation. And after a little search, AND with the FREE word, they decided to install Suse 7.1 personal in almost all workstations (some of them need windows or DOS because they use special software to operate some machines). And so on. From what I understand, this suggests that 65.96.243.127 is actually using *my* IP address (65.96.240.72) somewhere on his machine. But I don't know for sure. Any suggestions? Since I did a minimum install, it did not install KDE 2.0, so I don't think there is a way for me to search for XCDRoast. Just run a search for "xcdroast" and see if you can find it. Then install it. I have a firewall server running SuSE 7.1. I want to add an modem so that remote traveling sales people can login and use our network resorces and also prevents us from having to have an ISP for dialup. I have got the dail-in stuff most of the way working. I can dial up the server, connect, access the internet. I can not access any of the systems (other than the dial-up server) on the internal network though. I checked the firewall, the users should have unlimited network permissions since I couldn't get it to work I decided to go from a nothing to something routine, I checked the firewall logs. They do not show any items for when I try to connect to the internal network. Does anyone have any suggestions on why I can't do anything including ping the sytems.
