hi folks Thanks to all those who unswered directly or on the list. But my thread got removed instantly. What's the coverup? I now believe the four Germans I saw here in FL. They work for Siemens and they told me they never run SuSE. Instead they use Solaris. When I asked about SuSE, they told me few people care about it in Germany. Their boss gave me his email address. I think SuSE is for America's markets. Sorry anyway. thanks

I first encountered SuSE Linux as a coverdisk give away back when it was at version 5.1. It has improved immensly since then, the main improvement being in the documentation since at least 6.4 it has NOT been mostly in German (as it was back at v5.1 or at least it was on the coverdisk). I have used a variety of distributions of Linux and have used a number of UNIX implementations including Solaris. Of all of these I would go for SuSE Linux out of choice and would recommend it to anyone. Regards -- Roger L.S. Griffiths, BSc (Hons) Gott Wurfelt Nicht (God does not play dice) - Albert Einstein

I would agree with you on that, I may have never used Solaris beyond the initial installation screen, but SuSE is the best. Perfect/near perfect blending of power and ease of use. And it to think is still actually maturing. I use to support Windows domestically and proffesionally, now one is gone (professionally) the other is only when I am cornered! Supporting Linux is easier as you can get a straight answer, rather than finger pointing, or the usual "re-install". Which magazine did you get the coverdisk from? Thats how I first encountered Linux too...? It was the first time they ever put it on the coverdisk. Matt

???? Huh ??? Then why do I see it on the shelves in the computer stores over here. SuSE is really popular everywhere I go.. or it seems that way. They just did a "tour" through the Netherlands lately, promoting the product. There is a rather large number of people I work with that use SuSE Linux on their home systems. OK, we all use Solaris at work on our SUN workstations... but... SuSE is one of the major Linux distributions here in western Europe. Much better supported than it's rival RedHat (at least where I live anyway). C.
Dude..how much crack are you on? You talk to SOLARIS users. I have those at work. I am one of them...but I also use SuSE/Linux. Linux is banned in my company from problems that happened years ago..well. It's banned outwardly..they can know you installed it, but yet no one will say anything if you did. It's rather strange. I have to have a Sun Solaris box since that's what I work with now. Never, never take the word of someone you just met. Old school Unix guys at lot of times will talk shit about Linux .. one of the bosses in my department is an old school unix guy turned manager. He hasn't really seen Linux in 5 years..at least not in action, but I'll tell you this. He can really talk up some shit about it. After I figured out he suffered from nasal-anal loopback when it came to Linux/FreeBSD..etc. I disregarded his opinion on the subject. oh well. If you want to go run Solaris X86 I wish you the pain your GOING to get. It's horrible and for the most part unsupported. You are in for a very rude awaking if you buy a Sparc box and think your not going to rebuild the OS install and install a lot .. a lot of GNU apps. *laugh* I almost wish I could be there. :) I can't stand it...I have to get a coffee..and a smoke. This just brings tears to my eyes that you would send this to this ...haha.. oh brother. * gelah (gelah@bellsouth.net) [010602 12:23]: -> ->hi folks -> ->Thanks to all those who unswered directly or on the list. Well, first off, being one of those "old school" UNIX guys, thank you Ben. I also use Solaris on a daily basis, only because the applications I need have yet to be ported to Linux (they are in the works though.) I also run Linux both at work and at home, and wouldn't have it any other way. Most people that I know that are old school UNIX guys, are absolutely amazed when I show them what Linux is really capable of and I make new converts all along the way. Solaris is a reliable and stable platform... but the cost and hardware that goes with it are too rich for my blood. Linux is cheap, powerful, flexible and as time goes on becoming stable enough to compete with ANY operating system around. For the original poster... if you think Linux is not worth your time, go check out IBM's page sometime and see what they and many others are doing with Linux... you will not be disappointed. - Herman Ben Rosenberg wrote:

And I must add, Solaris 8 is $25(U.S.) higher for the Sparc box than for the X86 box, pissed me off so much, I installed SuSE-Sparc Linux on my SS20.

Siemans probably does run Solaris. But the largest ISP in Germany, and from what I understand Europe runs SuSE. Several other large companies also use it. I can't believe that you would believe 4 guys on Vacation. uh, suse is *very* popular here in germany, more and more of the guys related to it i know are currently making decissions to switch over to linux. (sure, some of them with my "help" converting them to recon linux as a stable and usable system) greets, chris btw: last week i bought a 4-way monitor/key/mouse switch, brand: belkin. at first i was stunning that this little box had 4 stickers on its bottom : "runs with novell", "runs with windows", "is y2k compliant" AND (!!!) "runs with linux" (you know, those "certificate" stickers...) but the best is, at the moment i wanted to put the handbook in my desk's drawer, i found that there is a cd in the booklet. and what ??? turbolinux (designed for servers) !!! they give away a linux distro with their switch !!! this is really amazing !!! -- visit me at http://mamalala.de
If all your going to do is whine and talk s$%t - please don't. If you have a problem and a post that hasn't been answered then repost. I've had to do this a few times - when you get 100+ emails for the SuSE mailing list each day it's easy to over look them. I have just under 550 unread. If you want help keep trying it's one of the best groups I've found. If you want to get flamed keep it up and have fun with your Solaris box (if that's really possible): Good luck(you'll need it) chaio Curtis On Saturday 02 June 2001 10:17 am, gelah wrote:
