Re: [SLE] Fwd: Re: nVidia driver problem on Linux
I too am running the newest nvidia drivers, and am experiencing something I don't quite understand completely. It may be a "bug" or an Operator Error (P.L.B.C.A.K.). I can use ALT+F2 to switch to a another console (In KDE), but when I try to switch back with ALT+F1 All I see is the messages on a black console (My X-session doesn't come back up). Now I can use CTRL+ALT+BCKSPC to end the x-session but That closes all open tasks. I suspect that my trouble is ignorance of the proper proceedure to return to the x-session after switching consoles. Anyways heres the data. 800MHz P-3 128 MB 133MHz RAM Viper 770 w/ 32 MB 7.1 Pro X-4.0.3 KDE-2.1.1 Nvidia's latest drivers installed as directed by site. Ambrosius

I'm one of the victims of this bug. Two others have posted here and a third person who doesn't care about it have confirmed it.
It seems to be necessary to be running either kdm or xdm; running the Gnome login manager gdm averts the bug. It doesn't happen on first login, only second login. During the first login it's possible to get to a virtual terminal. I don't think it happens with startx either. But if you shut down (either real shutdown or reboot) after the first login, you don't see the termination messages even though you get an otherwise clean shutdown.
By the way, I've found that if on second login you go to a virtual terminal and get the frozen system, you can get back your screen with Ctl-Alt-F7.
So far I have not heard of anyone who's running kdm and the Nvidia 1251 drivers, on this list at least, who can get to a virtual terminal on second login. Ben Rosenberg, who didn't believe that the drivers were defective, tried the experiment and got the same result.
The one (unlikely) possibility that hasn't been checked out is that the bug is somehow peculiar to SuSE distributions. After all, all of us are running SuSE of some flavor, which is why we're on this newslist.

Harold, Try Ctrl + Alt + F7 which is where your X session lives..not F1 :) Regards, * Harold ! Correction to the correction: it's Alt-Ctl-F1 for the console, Alt-Ctl-F7 for the X session. Paul

Correction to the correction to the correction: when you're in a text console, you don't need to press ctrl. alt-F7 will bring you to X Regards Anders
