I too am running the newest nvidia drivers, and am experiencing something I don't quite understand completely. It may be a "bug" or an Operator Error (P.L.B.C.A.K.). I can use ALT+F2 to switch to a another console (In KDE), but when I try to switch back with ALT+F1 All I see is the messages on a black console (My X-session doesn't come back up). Now I can use CTRL+ALT+BCKSPC to end the x-session but That closes all open tasks. I suspect that my trouble is ignorance of the proper proceedure to return to the x-session after switching consoles. Anyways heres the data.
Just a thought - Please excuse me if I have misunderstood the situation, but the X-Session is on ALT+F7, not ALT+F1 - ALT+F1 is just the controlling tty.
Correction to the correction: it's Alt-Ctl-F1 for the console, Alt-Ctl-F7 for the X session.

Correction to the correction to the correction: when you're in a text console, you don't need to press ctrl. alt-F7 will bring you to X Regards Anders
