How to set the history length in bash?

Anyone know how to increase bash's history length? I've done it before, I think it's a variable, but I can't figure it out today. Also, how do you show all of your shell variables? Kernel too big error

Hi, I have been trying to compile a new 2.4.2 kernel. Mainly to see if I can do it. The first time I did this it appeared to work fine. However I wanted to tweak things and re-did the same steps: make xconfig (loading the previously saved configuration then changing a couple of small things) make dep make clean make bzImage make modules make modules_install This time when I tried to run lilo it reported error kernel too big. When I looked I discovered that the new vmlinuz file was over 2GB! I can't work out what I did differently the first time, but I have tried several times since and always get the same problem. I have checked that I am using modules and compiling almost everything I can as modules, so I don't think the kernel needs to be this size. Any help appreciated. I think someone recently posted a similar problem, but I couldn't find it when I searched the archives, so sorry if this is a FAQ. Regards, Mark

Kernel 2.4.0-4GB question

Hi everyone When I installed SuSE 7.1 on my IBM Thinkpad, I chose kernel 2.4 in the installation process. After the installation was done a uname -r shows 2.4.0-4GB. I want to recompile the kernel but when I install the source (linux or lx_sus22) I get kernel 2.2.18. When installing the package lx_sus24 I get the source for 2.4.0.SuSE but no 2.4.0-4GB???? My question is, where or how do I get the source for the installed 2.4.0-4GB kernel??? Any help would be appreciated. l8r JvdW PS. On a smaller machine with only 32MB RAM it installed the 2.4.0 kernel without any -4GB.... Could this be because the laptop has 160MB RAM?

Linux + CD-Writer + Laptop

X and console screens

One for thought I'd like to have 2 X (kde2) login screens and 2 sraight Console screens on my system at bootup. any ideas how and what to configure thanks in advance 7.1 on a Dell 8000 scsijon

2-up printing

Under 7.0 I could get html printed with 2 pages per sheet using a2ps. However, having changed to 7.1 (a complete re-install) this now fails, though Netscape still receives it. Perhaps there is a different way to achieve the same result? Chris Willmot

Can anyone help me out a bit with this. I need to make an iptables rule that will do the same thing as these ipchains rule. #IDENTD $IPCHAINS -A input -p tcp -s $REMOTENET -d $OUTERNET 113 -j ACCEPT $IPCHAINS -A input -p udp -s $REMOTENET -d $OUTERNET 113 -j ACCEPT It's a bitch..but efnet IRC servers require IDENTD.. For those of us who are stuck with a KDE-centric distro like SuSE until we have time to switch, GNOME 1.4 is due out tomorrow. Does anyone know what will be required and whether 7.1 has the libs and locations? -- Q: How many journalists does it take to screw in a lightbulb? A: Three. Order of script execution at boot-up.

Hello All, I am trying to set up a script to automatically back up my system whenever it is booted and connected to the network. The backup is onto a network drive, so networking must first be activated. The commands in boot.local are executed before eth0 is activated. What is the order of script education? Thanks, John.

ncpfs

I am using SuSE 7.1 with kernel 2.4.2. I have been using the ncpfs utilities for some time. When I updated from 7.0 to 7.1 I did realize the ncpfs utilities do not really work. I was not even able to get the list about the servers on the local net. After recompiling the package, I was able to get the list about the serversm, however, I was not able to mount NetWare 5 shares. When I moved back to the ncpfs for SuSE 7.0, everything worked fine. Do you have any idea what is going on? One more question. The printers on NetWare are managed by NDPS since last week. How can acceess them from my Linux box? pqlist says that there is no printer on the server.
