I couldn't get it going on either SuSE 6.4 or 7.0 using the standard SuSE kernels and the patch program complained quite a lot when I tried patching them. I ended up downloading a new 2.2.16 (non SuSE) and patching that along with compiling and installing mt-st prog from linuxtapecert.org. Worked first time when I did this. I thought SuSE had already patched their kernels to work with this drive but they just didn't work. I also notice that the drive is not listed in the hardware database on SuSEs web site. I haven't tried the drive with 2.2.18 yet but that's on my list of things to do. As to using taper. I haven't been able to get that working with the drive. tar works perfectly though. Sean.

Nightly Cron undoes changes

Hi: I have Icons in a nonstandard folder and every night, after the cron job runs, the icons are deleted from my menu. My question is where is the centeral config file so I can set (hopefully) a value to prevent these erasures. TIA -- Cheers, Jonathan

??? Update 7.0->7.1 from local directory

Hi, I have SuSE 7.0 installed, and complete mirror of 7.1 on my root volume (RaiserFS formatted) from SuSE ftp site. I am starting PC from CD 7.0#1, choose install/update system -> from hard drive -> select partition (dev/hda3), enter source directory (/home/ftp/mirror/suse7.1/suse), and got the message "Cannot find the image! Check the directory specification!" I am tried to change directory from /home/ftp/mirror/suse7.1/suse to /home/ftp/mirror/suse7.1, but the problem exists. /home/ftp/mirror/suse7.1 is a complete mirror of suse 7.1 ftp. Any idea what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance Andrei

Hi Suser, I had configure our server 2 with Suse 7.0 Evaluation copy Using 2.2.16-SMP Kernel. Initialy our main server (server 1) is runing red hat 6.2 with out any upgrade and acting as Mail Server and Internet Server (for Browsing) with a dedicated dialup connection. The ip address assigned to the server 1 was 192.168.1.1. My question is how to setup server2 as Mail Server -- Jonathan J. An unemployed man goes to apply for a job with Microsoft as a janitor. The manager there arranges for him to take an aptitude test (Section: Floors, sweeping and cleaning). After the test, the manager says, "You will be employed at minimum wage, $5.15 an hour. Let me have your e-mail address, so that I can send you a form to complete and tell you where to report for work on your first day. Taken aback, the man protests that he has neither a computer nor an e-mail address. To this the MS manager replies, "Well, then, that means that you virtually don't exist and can therefore hardly expect to be employed. Stunned, the man leaves. Not knowing where to turn and having only $10 in his wallet, he decides to buy a 25 LB flat of tomatoes at the supermarket. Within less than 2 hours, he sells all the tomatoes individually at 100% profit. Repeating the process several times more that day, he ends up with almost $100 before going to sleep that night. And thus it dawns on him that he could quite easily make a living selling tomatoes. Getting up early every day and going to bed late, he multiplies his profits quickly. After a short time he acquires a cart to transport several dozen boxes of tomatoes, only to have to trade it in again so that he can buy a pickup truck to support his expanding business. By the end of the second year, he is the owner of a fleet of pickup trucks and manages a staff of a hundred former unemployed people, all selling tomatoes. Planning for the future of his wife and children, he decides to buy some life insurance. Consulting with an insurance adviser, he picks an insurance plan to fit his new circumstances. At the end of the telephone conversation, the adviser asks him for his e-mail address in order to send the final documents electronically. When the man replies that he has no e-mail, the adviser is stunned, "What, you don't have e-mail? How on earth have you managed to amass such wealth without the Internet, e-mail and e-commerce? Just imagine where you would be now, if you had been connected to the internet from the very start!" After a moment of thought, the tomato millionaire replied, "Why, of course! I would be a floor cleaner at Microsoft!" Moral of this story: 1. The Internet, e-mail and e-commerce do not need to rule your life. 2. If you don't have e-mail, but work hard, you can still become a millionaire. 3. Since you got this story via e-mail, you're probably closer to becoming a janitor than you are to becoming a millionaire. 4. Laptop in ACPI with 2.4.2 doesn't turn off

Hi. I have a clone laptop with Suse 7.0, with kernel upgraded to 2.4.2. Since installing Suse 7.0 on it locks have been frequent. Finally, it is stable with ACPI in kernel, instead of APM. But before, with APM, when turning it off, its power supply went off. With ACPI the last messages when turning off are: ..... /dev/hda4 umounted proc umounted The system will be halted immediately Master Resource Control: runlevel 0 has been reached It then stays on forever. It is no problem; however pressing the on-off button is needed . Next turn on is normal. Since it dual boots in W98SE, this popular graphic operating system (not installed in ACPI mode; it was unstable) "knows" with APM how to turn off the power supply. Any workaround or suggestion for making its power supply go off at the end of the shutdown process with 2.4.2 kernel using ACPI?

Changing the DPI Settings

Hi everyone, I was adviced by one of the authors of Konqueror that my X configuration has the wrong DPI setting (75 rather than 96). Some suggestions for Yast2 - SuSE 7.1

Just started installing 7.1 so while this stuff is fresh in my mind here we go.. 1. Ability to create partitions with filesystems other than ext2 and reiser. Would really help. Currently have to do this through yast1 or after installation has been completed. 2. Just before Yast2 starts writing to the hard disk, it gives an option for writing the selected options to a floppy disk. When you try this, it complains that the floppy has not been formatted. I would think it would handle this automatically after confirming this with the user. Just niggles but they'd help. Overall, Yast2's detection abilities (on a 'current' machine) are very good. Haha!! I seem to be running the whole gamut of potential istallation issues. I took the advice of one of the posts here and persevered. Eventually it worked. However, I'v run into a problem 'formatting and checking' (via Yast1) reiser-specified partitions. I get the message that the partition is'nt large enough (600MB aint large enough!!) or that the device does not exist. Reading some of the other posts, it seems the only way through this is to clear everything on the drive, format the whole disk to a single partition and then start partitioning again. So tonite, i'm gonna have to get *nasty* with my hard drive. (Does that sound slightly erotic?) :-) Thanks y'all.
