Savage S3 card with SuSE 6.4

Dear Sirs, I'm using SuSE 6.4 on a ASUS P2B with Celeron 400, it works fine. My only problem is the graphic adapetr configuration: with SAX2 I'm not able to work at 800 x 600 with 24bpp... I have to stay with 640 x 480, no 3D support and 65536 colors.... it's a limited view, with some windows I have to move them up to reach the OK or CANCEL or APPLY buttons... It's like missing a leg or some fingers!! Can someone please help me?? I'm quite new in Linux, able to edit manually some files if necessary. Thanks a lot in advance. Enrico

I thought I understood the basics of bash but this stuff is not working with SUSE. These lines are taken from the file: /etc/profile ------------------------------------------------- # PLEASE DON'T CHANGE /etc/profile. Chances are that your changes will # be lost during the next upgrade. # Use /etc/profile.local for your favourite global aliases, # your VISUAL and EDITOR variables, etc ... # # and now let's look if there is a local profile (for stuff not # defined by SuSE Linux, but your friendly admin) # test -e /etc/profile.local && . /etc/profile.local -------------------------------------------------- These are lines I added to /etc/profile.local as USER root, as instructed by the /etc/profile above - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - alias cls 'clear' alias dir 'ls -alg' -------------------------------------------------- These aliases ARE NOT being set on booting USER /root. Why not? The aliases which are already in /etc/profile are not working either so this file is obviously not being processed. I also want to add some novell netware config commands that are global for ALL users, but the profile scripts are not being run, either by SuSEconfig after editing, nor upon booting. Problem - Updating 7.0->7.1 from local directory

Hi, I have SuSE 7.0 installed, and complete mirror of 7.1 on my root volume (RaiserFS formatted) from SuSE ftp site. I am starting PC from CD 7.0#1, choose install/update system -> from hard drive -> select partition (dev/hda3), enter source directory (/home/ftp/mirror/suse7.1/suse), and got the message "Cannot find the image! Check the directory specification!" I am tried to change directory from /home/ftp/mirror/suse7.1/suse to /home/ftp/mirror/suse7.1, but the problem do not disappear. /home/ftp/mirror/suse7.1 is a complete mirror of suse 7.1 ftp. The mirror is OK for sure, becuase if I tell YaST1 to update entire system from my mirror, it checks directory and then tells that it cannot update base system while it is running. Any idea what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance Andrei

Postgres 7.0.3 and ODBC

Hi! I'm now trying to make odbc working on my SuSE 7.0 linux box. That is I want to make a connection between Applix 4.4.1 Data and Postgres. I have tried to use pgaccess; but this application won't correctly display our norwegians pecial letters (i.e æøå). But I have had no luck. I have followed the instructions in the postgres helpfiles; for applix; I have tried iodbcadm; no luck. I have also observed an email on one of the other postgres e-mail groups mentioning that applix 5 has problems with this! I have also tried the driver with startoffice 5.2. No luck there either! Has anyone made odbc on Linux work with postgres 7.0.3? Problem getting popper to log to a differnt file

My /var/log/messages file gets spammed with popper connections, and I am trying to change it to point to a saperate file. The man page says it logs to local0, notice, but changing this produces no effect. (The man page also says the default log file is /usr/spool/mqueue/syslog) (I also tried numerous other facilities and log levels to no avail. I know the syntax of syslog.conf, and I also have other custom log files that work fine. Is popper broken in this regard? Had anyone gotten this to work. I hate to write a script to parse the log into different files. Thankx, CC

Sean Akers@ROMAX 02/04/2001 17:27 Brute force I'm afraid. rpm -qa | grep kde then copied and pasted all the 2.x packages onto an rpm -e command. Some of these produced dependency errors so I did rpm -e on those packages stated in the error messages. It took ages, but as I said before, it worked. Plus it cleared out a load of other rubbish and got me back some disk space as well. It might be better to try Crazy Diamond's approach first and see if that works. Problems with KDE 2.1.1 upgrade on SuSE

I get an error message when trying to start up KDE after upgrading to 2.1.1. I'm running SuSE 7.1 and was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Installing the RPMs goes fine. Then I reboot hoping to load the new KDE but instead the GUI starts to load then I get dropped into a text logon prompt. If I type "startx" I get the following message box: "error setting up inter-process communication for KDE. could not read network connection list. /root/.DCOPserver_[host name]_:0 check that dcopserver is running!" If I go back to the text shell and try starting dcopserver by typing "dcopserver" it says "$DISPLAY not set". I have tried the bug database at kde.org but all I have found are people with the same problem who seem to fix it on their own and there are no solutions listed.
