That's what I wanted , but I wanted to make it easy, and use SuSE rpm's. I could use rpms from SuSE 7.1, but it's probably easier to use the tar.gz stuff in Documentation/changes. <> You right that it's easer to use the tar - downloads, than the suse7.1 rpm's as SuSE may need to do things to keep with their distro integrity - eg. dependances - library links - , and such. <> You also stated that ''gcc 2.91.66 is not a problem because linux doesn't need any gcc installed to run.'' I was concerned that there would possably be trouble when compiling for say, ALSA - or other - tar stuff , if the gcc was not upgraded to egcs 1.1.2 (gcc 2.91.66) I had egcs 1.x.x somthing before - couple years ago , and I was very impressed with it being reliable , and stable . anyway, I downloaded the egcs 1.1.2 (gcc 2.91.66) from <ftp://sourceware.cygnus.com/pub/gcc/releases/egcs-1.1.2/egcs-1.1.2.tar.bz2> havn't installed it yet , but I'll get to it. I still have 2.95.2 from the SuSE 7.0 CD's . I installed the updated kernel rpm - k_deflt_2~i386.rpm - forgot now whether I used yast or rpm -Uvh k_deflt_2~i386.rpm I now have a uname -r > 2.4.2-4GB and /lib/modules/2.4.2-4GB which I don't know, could be causing any problems ?? I downloaded ALSA 0.9 beta 3 , and tried to compile it but got errors . basslake:/usr/src/Temp/alsa-driver-0.9.0beta3]# ./configure --with-debug=detect --with-isapnp=auto --with-sequencer=yes -- with-oss=yes --with-cards=ymfpci --with-moddir=/lib/modules/2.4.2-4G make install gives sound_oss.c:27: #error "Enable the OSS soundcore multiplexer (CONFIG_SOUND) in the kernel." make[1]: *** [sound_oss.o] Error 1 Which leads me to question if the stock kernel config has changed to foul dependencies of ALSA ? , or maybe the 2.4.2-4GB designation of module directory ? - which seems quite irregular to me. SOUND SUPPORT is of course, configured in the stock kernel because my alsa sound is functional - accept for recording sequences from synth-keyboard to the computer . ALSA 5.10 - (came with the k_deflt_2~i386.rpm) suse-ftp/update/70 it's the 2.4.2-4GB kernel. Thanks again for replys and advice . ncpmount: root=yes ,otheruser=no

When logged in as root I am able to configure IPX with ipx_configure and use ncpmount to mount the netware server/drives. When using my regular login account however I get the following error: ipx_configure: ioctl: Operation not permitted Any help on resolving this would be most appreciated. thanks, otto porter

Problems with posting to suse list using KMail

Hello, I wrote a mail earlier which bragged about how easy my switch to Linux was this morning. However as soon as I went to send the mail I hit a problem. Normally I am subscribed to this list with the address: jsc_lists(a)rock-tnsc.com My outgoing mail server is with another registered account: jethro(a)163bj.com My outgoing mail server in KMail is setup for this and is: mail.163bj.com I have a profile setup for mailing lists in KMail called "jsc lists" in which my e-mail address is: jsc_lists(a)rock-tnsc.com. When I tried to post to this list from KMail using this profile I got a failure notice back from the qmail program at lists.suse.com. A copy of the header is attached below. Am I doing something wrong? Or is this a feature (bug?) of KMail? This works fine in Outlook 2000. Also in Outlook 2000 I can setup a separate smtp mail server for each e-mail address. I can't see any way to do this KMail. I did try in KMail setting up the rock-tnsc.com smtp mailserver but one I tried to send mail it failed saying with error 550 saying that the header was incorrect. Anybody got any ideas? Could I solver my problem using postfix to pass on my mail to my ISP's mailserver? TIA, Jethro Attached failure message below: ------------------------------------------------------ Hi. Something listening on port 1135

I have something listening on port 1135 and am trying to figure out what it is. I can telnet to that port and enter commands, but I get no feedback hinting at what is there. I cannot systematically shutdown services since this box is in production. I disable a lot of the stuff that comes default under 7.0. In addition, I am running the following services on this machine: Oracle 817 (listener is only on 1521), MySQL (port 3306), Apache (only port 80), SMTP, pop3, ssh, and Weblogic (port 7001). Anyone have any ideas what typical listens on port 1135? Thanks, CC

Economics of adding access to Bugzilla to SuSE Linux Professional?

Hi, Has SuSE ever thought of adding access to its Bugzilla system to the features offered with SuSE Linux Professional? Right now, some Partners have access: http://www.suse.com/us/suse/partner_program/pscc/index.html Access to the Bugzilla system would make the process of reporting and tracking bugs much more transparent. Right now I read the Knowledge Base and either send a message to this list or send a message to feedback(a)suse.de, but I see no transparent way of linking individual bug reports to known problems to fixes to releases other than a system like Bugzilla, which SuSE does use internally. It does help me enormously that the major open source projects, eg. KDE and DRI have open bug tracking systems. I can see what problems are known, and what types problems are given higher priority than others. I can also see what problem reports are resolved as "problem between chair and keyboard", ie. user error, or problems with doco. The only downside I can see is that Bugzilla access is another feature and would take effort on SuSE's part to maintain. This may raise the price of the Professional package. Maybe ione year's subscription to Bugzilla could be offered as a pay-for additional feature. Best regards

Idedma.rc.config "Permission denied" What does this mean??

Ive just purchaced and installed 7.1 professional. I went into KDE and used the text editor to modify /etc/rc.config Really the only change I made was regarding the doc host , so insted of using http://localhost. SuSE config will replace all the docs with my 10.xxx address This is so I can "serve" documents from SuSE DOC_HOST = 10.xxx DOC_SERVER = yes saved the file and ran SuSEconfig and Im getting all these errors Idedma.rc.config "Permission denied" same thing happens when I reboot tons and tons of errors!!! what is causing this? thanks rob

Well said and may this issue die the normal roadkill death. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- It is not a matter of whether it is difficult, it is a matter of "do we want and have the manpower to put in the effort to setup and maintain a news server when we have mailinglists already?" At the moment it is not a priority, but maybe things will change in the future, who knows. How is this subset selected? 2. Is there any way in YaST2 to install the other update RPM packages from the SuSE FTP site? Or do I have to use YAST (1) instead? 3. Is the fact that updates are missing from YOU a bug and should I report it to feedback(a)suse.de? As you can see above, I have also sent a copy of these questions to feedback(a)suse.de. 4. The manuals in SuSE - Help do not contain a description of YaST Online Update. Is this something that will be fixed for SuSE Linux 7.2? 5. (5.1) A wishlist item for YaST2 is the ability to use the FTP site as the installation source. The "network" choice in "Change Source of Installation" apparently needs a mountable file system, rather than FTP. The help panel on the left implies that NFS is used. (5.2) The help should state explicity that NFS and not FTP is used. Should this be fixed?
