Installed programs not showing up in menus

Very frustrating 7.1 Kernel why is it that both gnome and KDE seem to display which programs they please rather than the programs I've installled. Say for example I install Star Office.... It dosnt show up! I install xroast... dosnt show up! I install games... guess what?? Virtually *NONE* of the really usefull *NEW* programs are available.... but *tons* of junk programs are!! So, I suppose its my responsibility to bring all these in and run them under the correct permissions and risk trashing my system!! I would think in a distro that's as far along as SuSE .. this *should* be done for you rather than having the risk of running programs under the wrong permissions why is this? rob

If you use the standard setup, i.e. vmlinuz and System.map, you don't need to change lilo.conf, but then your old kernel, saved to vmlinuz.old, will be gone the second time you build a new kernel. If you use my scheme, i.e. modify arch/i386/boot/Makefile to create kernel and System.map with the kernel version tagged on, then you need to make sure you have a matching entry for the new kernel in /etc/lilo.conf. But even if you don't, kernel and System map are copied to INSTALL_PATH and only the call to LILO will fail. So you just create the entry then and call LILO manually. IMO it is a small bit of work that greatly saves you some hassle, especially if you play around^H^H^H experiment with a larger number of kernels. HP scanner

Hi since i update to kernel 2.4.0 i can't install my scanner. It's a HP scanjet 5p, it is recognize by sane. It is on a SCSI card sym53c416. I try to install the card in the kernel. it loads but in yast when i want to configure it i just have sg0 and sg1 witch are my cdrom and my cd-writer (they are both emulate as SCSI). I've also try to compile as a module but when i want to load the module i've got an error message : /lib/modules/2.4.0/kernel/drivers/scsi/sym53c416.o: init_module: Aucun périphérique de ce type Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters /lib/modules/2.4.0/kernel/drivers/scsi/sym53c416.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.0/kernel/drivers/scsi/sym53c416.o failed /lib/modules/2.4.0/kernel/drivers/scsi/sym53c416.o: insmod sym53c416 failed The problem is that i don't know how to get IRQ.... [SLE] Howto set the 2.4 kenel as default bootup ?

With the older (7.0 or lower) version, I can set which option to boot in Lilo, but the new 7.1 does not allow me to? Any solution as it's default to the 2.2 kernel and I have to 'down arrow' to pick the 2.4 everytime, and worst, if I missed, I ended up with restart. :( Suggestion? idea on how? Thanks Dennis/sg

KDE2 and root

Dear Readers- When I login as root and select kde2 from the pulldown menu of the login window, gnome is launched instead. I can login as a user in kde2 and I can login as root in kde but not kde2.
