Sound for Users in 7.1

Good morning - Sorry for the long message, but I have been struggling for a couple of weeks to get my sound card back, I'm running 7.1 with the 2.4.2 kernel. I have a Soundblaster 32AWE card and have managed to configure it with ALSA so that I can get sound to work as root. However, I cannot seem to get sound as a normal user. When I execute "aplay -l" as root I get the following: Sound Blaster AWE32/64: 1 [card1] / #0: DSP v4.13 Directions: playback capture duplex Playback subdevices: 1 Capture subdevices: 1 Playback subdevice #0: subdevice #0 Capture subdevice #0: subdevice #0 Howver when I run "aplay -l" as a user, I get back the response that no soundcards were found. If I try to run aplay with a .wav file as a user, this is the response I get: Aplay: version 0.5.10 by Jaroslav Kysela <perex(a)suse.cz> Error: unable to obtain longname: Permission denied In KDE Control Panel, when I look at information on the Sound Card, ALSA sound driver is listed as being loaded, Card Config shows Soundblaster 16, but Audio devices, Synth Devices, and Mixers show "not enabled in config". The MIDI device is listed as MPU-401. If I try RealPlayer, either as root or user, I get an error message that the audio device could not be opened and that it might be in use by another application. As a user, when I start kmix, all I get is an empty box, with no controls showing. However, as root, I get the full range of controls on the mixer. Finally, to confuse things, I can run successfully run KSCD as a user and get sound, but I cannot alsaplayer to work as a user. This is the message I get when I run it on the console: ALSA->open(): Permission denied /usr/lib/alsaplayer/output/libalsa.so failed to load /usr/lib/alsaplayer/output/liboss.so failed to load NOTE: THIS IS THE NULL PLUGIN. YOU WILL NOT HEAR SOUND!! includes for 2.2.16-SMP

Hi, I'm trying to compile a driver for a BDM cable and it requires the includes for the kernel that's running. When I installed SuSE 7.0 YAST decided I needed the SMP kernel but know I can't find the includes for the kernel (/usr/src/linux-2.2.16.SuSE is not SMP) Anyone have any suggestions? suggestions for delivering mail to win clients

Hi everyone, I am in the planning to set a firewall/masquareding box which will be connected to the internet via DSL. There will be approximately 20 local PC's which are connected to the firewall box. The PC's will be using windows 98 and Windows NT. 1) What would be the easiest way to deliver fetched mail from the net to the local machines 2) Is there a firewall application which will allow setting it up from a windows machine via a browser 3) I have found putty and openssh for windows clients http://www.networksimplicity.com/openssh/ anyone using these and anything vital TIA -- Togan Muftuoglu

SuSE 7.0 Nameserver Problem

I know most problems people find have already been found by someone else, and I expect this one to be no different. I have SuSE 7.0 on a laptop connected to a server cable modem out to my ISP. When in Yast1 or Yast2, if I define the ISPs nameserver addresses then I cannot get out to any network, including my in house server. I also receive a console log message that I might have a ethernet cable problem. If I remove the nameserver addresses I can get anywhere as long as I use a dot.four address in my browser, no name resolution. I have tried all combinations I can think of. Weird, either the problem or me, not sure of which. So, I am sure someone has an answer, or a lead I could follow. Thanks in advance. [OT] VNC password encryption?

Hey, I am setting up a box for some people who are not used to Linux. The box it NOT on a network, and security is really not an issue at all (there's nothing of value on the box, and since it's not networked it can't be used against other computers). Because of this the username is "users" and the password is "users". These are the kind of people who things it's weird to have to use a password at all :-). Anyway, they're going to be using VNC, and the VNC password needs to match the regular logon password. But VNC won't take "users", it says the password is too short. I was hoping I could use htpassword to encrypt the password and overwrite VNC's, but it looks like VNC doesn't use standard UNIX crypt(). Does any one know what it does use, or another way around this? Help: Install on Tecra 8100 fails on graphics

Hi, I, a newbie on Linux, want to install SuSe 7.1 on a Toshiba Tecra 8100. Yes, the one with the S3 Savage that is not supported in XFree86 3.x. During installation I manually add the S3 Savage package to install the drivers that go along with XFree86 4.x Once I have to select my display and resolution I run into troubles. I do select the LCD display. I don't see the S3 amongst the listed displays. Whatever resolution I selet, the next screen always displays drivers for XFree86 3 (VGA16/SVGA)! And the test fails (not to my surprise) and I can't continue to install X. Somehow I'm not able to get XFree86 version 4 installed but only version 3. Can someone give me a tip on how to solve this. 6.4 -> 7.1 upgrade

I'm in the process of doing an upgrade from 6.4 to 7.1. yast2 presented me with three packages which had *lower* version numbers on the 7.1 distribution, than I had loaded from the 6.4 distribution. I told it to go ahead and replace the packages anyway, figuring that you must know something I don't know. In other upgrades, I've encountered some packages which were 'split' into two or more new packages. Since I just told it to replace existing packages, and then add the minimum of new packages to resolve dependencies, will I have a complete system? Is there some list somewhere of 'split' packages, so I will know which packages I have to install to get back the full functionality I had? How about 'renamed' packages? Are there any packages which contain the same programs, but which go by different names between 6.4 and 7.1? Help needed with CDRW and DVD

The DVD is master and the CDRW is slave or secondary. Both were detected by Yast2 during install, but it did not install ide-scsi emulation. I have ide-scsi emulation set and working for both, but now the DVD does not read disks, and the CDRW is reading disks as cdrom but not writing disks, even though Koncd see the writer. I am not sure if I needed to set scsi emulation for the DVD? My main function for the DVD is install software cd's, and play music cd's and to retrive data from data cd's. My main needed for the CDRW is to make back up's and create data cd's from the hard drive. I think this is a linkage problem. Can some one please help. Confuseed! Need help with XDM.

Its such a rush hacking with two 19" moitors doing 1280x1024 each! :) The only "black cloud" is the fact that i cant get XDM (runlevel 3) to start my dualhead. :( I have tried setting Option "Xinerama" "On" in my XF86Config file. It doesnt help :( So right now i use runlevel 2 and manualy run "startx -- +xinerama" each time i log in. This way i get both monitors up...
