On March 22nd I finally got my Beast talking to my Sony by what I thought was the use of the SuSE FireWall. Last night, because of forcast thunderstorms, I shut down and unplugged both machines. I am paranoid about getting hit by lightening. My house was struck several years ago. Besides all the appliances that were damaged, I saw a really interesting phenomena: ball lightening! It emerged from the wall outlet as a ball about the size of a vollyball and the color of a basket ball, but with a glowing surface. It slowly floated toward me across the dining room while gradually decending. About two feet in front of me it touched the carpet, made a sizzling noise, and disappeared. It created a scorched spot about 7cm in diameter. But, I don't want to go through the hassle of insurance adjustments and out of pocket expense to replace $4K worth of computer hardware when a 5 minutes of personal effort can aliviate any problems. The Sony had not been rebooted since the March 22nd kernel compiles. When I booted the Sony this morning I was greeted with a load of "permission denied" messages., and the eth0 --> dhcp connection wouldn't connect. (If the internet isn't a drug why does a panic attack occur when one can't gain access? ;-)) So, I turned the FireWall off and rebooted. I had IP FORWARD enabled but the Beast wouldn't connect to the internet, so I executed manually: ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.0.0/16 -b -j MASQ and added it to boot.local so it would work the next time I rebooted. The Beast connected again to the www. The firewall is going to stay off until it is better documented. I will be relying on the security of my Ciso 675 router, which has worked very well in the past. I am assuming here, BUT... why would these error messages occur of one turns off the Firewall? Does one have to go to each param and empty it before these msgs occur? Are some aspects of the firewall be turned on even though the firewall flag is set to 'no'? Is this a SuSE bug? JLK ... 1) Are there any cases where you should NOT use YaST, and should just use rpm from the command line? (YaST itself? The kernel? etc?) Thanks again everyone! Charles

I'm using kde2.1.0-1x and do not have the splash screen hang, but I do see the long logout problem. So I tried commenting out the LD_BIND_NOW line in startkde. When I re-started kde, I got the spash screen hang!!! I uncommented the line, and the hang went away. Maybe something else in the script has changed..... PPC Edition: why so few packages?

Howdy, I'm just wondering, why is it that the SuSE 7.1 for PPC has only 1000 packages, vs. x86's 2000? Are half of all Linux apps not compilable on PPC (I find that quite hard to belive)? Or did SuSE just not think it was worth the effort? Are they too short handed in their PPC department? Iptables rules with respect to Kernel 2.4.0

Hello Everyone, I have just installed SuSE 7.1 and only using the 2.4.0 Kernel provided in SuSE 7.1. I have a very simple Home LAN. This LAN is consists of two machines. Below is the configuration. Machine #1: IP = 192.168.1.1 (Connects to my ISP via 56k modem and one ethernet card connected to a HUB) Machine #2: IP = 192.168.1.2 (Ethernet card connected to the same HUB as above) All I want to do is be able to reach the outside world (from machine #2) using "Iptables". I've done this in the past using "Ipchains", however, Iptables is absolutely confusing in this respect. Is there anyone out the in the SuSE 7.1 world that has been successful in performing this task ? Please respond if you are such a person that has been successful and thank you in advance for your help. -Chris
