Help: Install on Tecra 8100 fails on graphics
Hi, I, a newbie on Linux, want to install SuSe 7.1 on a Toshiba Tecra 8100. Yes, the one with the S3 Savage that is not supported in XFree86 3.x. During installation I manually add the S3 Savage package to install the drivers that go along with XFree86 4.x Once I have to select my display and resolution I run into troubles. I do select the LCD display. I don't see the S3 amongst the listed displays. Whatever resolution I selet, the next screen always displays drivers for XFree86 3 (VGA16/SVGA)! And the test fails (not to my surprise) and I can't continue to install X. Somehow I'm not able to get XFree86 version 4 installed but only version 3. Can someone give me a tip on how to solve this. Thanks, Ed Steenhoek b.t.w.: I'm yet a true newbie and I'm not ready to do the SuSe install without X and install that manually afterwards.... that's hy I choose SuSe.....

I guess you're getting this from yast2. If it is so, just leave yast2 without configuring X. Then from console run sax2 and give it a try to configure X. This happened to me today, but not on a laptop. -Kastus

Kastus, Thanks for the reply. Indeed I used yast2. I tried sax2 and it asked me if I wanted to instal XFree86 4.0 which I did. Then it gives me this error: -------------- SaX: could not detect card for XFree86 4.0 SaX: trying to use an XFree86 3.3.x Server sax-2.9-5 SaX: sorry scanned X-Server is not installed SaX: please installed the Failed Server using YaST -------------- During installation of XFree86 4.0 te output did show some error on fnts, but it scrolled of my screen and now I'm not able to reproduce them. Any tips on how to continue? -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: Konstantin (Kastus) Shchuka [mailto:kastus@tsoft.com] Verzonden: Saturday, March 31, 2001 11:06 AM Aan: Suse-Linux-E Onderwerp: Re: [SLE] Help: Install on Tecra 8100 fails on graphics On Sat, Mar 31, 2001 at 10:12:23AM +0200, Ed Steenhoek wrote:

What version is your XFree86 ? Did you try the latest one, i.e. 4.0.3? -Kastus On Sat, Mar 31, 2001 at 12:01:20PM +0200, Ed Steenhoek wrote:
