Midi at last, thanks SuSE

So I gave in to the pressure and got 7.1. Yast2 installs both my SB PCI128 and the on board VIA sound perfectly, including the midi interfaces. So I can connect my digital piano. Jazz starts without problems asking which midi interface I would like to use for in and output. Good stuff. I guess the moral of the story is, with a hardware problem, get the latest version of everything relevant, try again, and only then ask further if it still doesn't work. David.

GCC 2.95.3 updates for 7.1

Hi all, Gcc 2.95.3 has finally been released. Because official updates only occur for bug fixes or security fixes, I've put packages for 7.1 in ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/pthomas/gcc/7.1. People with older versions of SuSE Linux may grab the source rpm in ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/pthomas/gcc and use that to build packages for their version. have fun -- Penguins to save the dinosaurs -- Handelsblatt on Linux for S/390

EGCS in SuSE v6.4

I find myself in a bit of a quandary! I've been using SuSE v6.4 since it came out and have been generally satisfied. However, several of the large software packages that I use for my research are written in FORTRAN and are best compiled in egcs As a consequence I've been playing around with Mandrake 7.2 on an experimental partition, primarily because egcs is included in that distribution (although I have to admit that I would rather use CUPS for my networked printer, but that's a separate issue). Sorry for the long-winded introduction. The question is - can I use egcs from the Mandrake distribution in the place of the stock SuSE 6.4 compiler? Comments will be most appreciated. Thanks in advance

Japanese Input Tool

Hi! I read that KDE2 supports unicode. But I didn't find any application on the SuSE 7.1 that make possible to input japanese characters, like Microsoft's IME on Win2k. Kernel 2.4.2 and TCP-flags

I just installed a downloaded kernel 2.4.2 and now I can't get through our MS firewall. The firewall message is: Bad TCP flags combination (...) probable QueSO probe as flags=0xc2 Any way to fix this? Best regards Odd Arild Olsen

K menu keystroke

In Windows, I find that Ctrl-Esc replaces the Start button for keyboards without one. What keystroke (other than the start button) will bring up the K menu in Linux KDE? -- Dan
