Not especially surprising when you are looking at the US support page... If you start at http://www.suse.com and use the "select your country" button at the top right on that page (select "Europe (English)"), you'll get redirected to http://www.suse.com/en. yast/suseconfig problem

I was just a bit quick with the fingers. I used yast1 in 7.0 and edited nameserver configuration. as it started to run the usual scripts after commiting to the change I noticed I had made a mistake and I killed yast. I thought I killed it before any scripts ran. I restarted yast and went back into nameserver configuration. I then commited again and it said "another suse config is running. waiting for it to finish......." I checked 'ps ax' and it was true. the thing was still running. I killed it and then closed my other yast session. I opened it again. I had no resolv.conf anymore. I edited nameservers again and tried to commit but it won't start suseconfig in yast anymore. I tried to hand start suseconfig but it won't start anymore saying it detected a running copy even though there is none. Hello all I'have just installed SuSE 7.1 French version it was available at SuSE boutique France on march 12 I ordered it by post on the 15th and got it on the 19th. pretty fast for the French post ! I had no difficulty to install : yast2 did a very good job except for the sound but Alsa never worked for me so it was not a surprise. I'll have to see to that later Sax2 froze my system and I had to reboot but I could do what I liked with sax1. I thank all the people on this list who were lucky enough to have their SuSE 7.1 before me but experienced many difficulties and proposed solutions which were a great help : installing Wp8, for instance was easy for me. My questions are 1) Why doesn't sax2 work on my machine (AMD K6 2 350Mhz - 96M RAM - S3 virge video card) is it too old ? 2) I like to have a large virtual desktop with kde, but I read in the manual that it is not recommended. Has any one manage to run a Video Highway Extreme TV Card on Suse 7.1. I would like to know what the configuration is. eg PLL=? Radio=?? Card=?? If one runs "depmod -a" does this reload modules.conf. eg after editing. Regards John Charls

SuSE 7.1 HELP

I've upgraded my desktop-machine from SuSE 6.4 (kernel 2.2.14) to SuSE 7.1, intending to use kernel 2.4. When I select the 2.4 kernel in yast, it seems to install it, reruns lilo... and I reboot, only to end up with the 2.2.18 again... I've tried this several times (even selecting 2.4 for i386 doesn't work). Help? Kind regards Guy

David, I've got some good news. I re-did adsl-setup. I did one thing differently: I chose "0" for the firewall option. I then went back to pap/chap secret files and properly entered hostname * password. Upon adsl-start, I got the go sign, "Connected!" I wanted to see some stats on my connection so I did adsl-status. Here's the results: bash-2.04# adsl-start ..... Connected! bash-2.04# adsl-status adsl-status: Link is up and running on interface ppp0 ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol inet addr:64.252.1.200 P-t-P:64.252.0.1 Mask:255.255.255.255 UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1492 Metric:1 RX packets:23 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:39 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:10 The stuff above looked somewhat decent; not that I really understand what it's telling me, so off I went to try to browse. Enter problem. I opened up Opera 5.0 browser and I cannot connect to any websites. I tried all the biggies: yahoo, excite, cnet, etc. The browser reports, "Sending request to" whatever the site address is, but No Go. I thought maybe it's a problem with the browser. I exited Xwindow system and from command line tried Lynx. Still no go. Lynx tried to find http://www.yahoo.com for a long while, stating, "HTTP request sent; waiting for response." But then I got this message from Lynx: Unable to locate remote host www.yahoo.com. Alert!: Unable to connect to remote host. lynx: Can't access startfile http://www.yahoo.com/ I can't figure out what's happening at this point. I have a live connection but I cannot seem to send and receive packets. By the way, my network card is a 3COM 905-TX. A ps x | grep question...

Greetings! I have a script that is run by cron every hour. I want to create a conditional statement that will check to see if the script is already running and to exit if the script is found in the output of 'ps x'. The conditional statement I'm working on is: test $(ps x | grep "/bin/bash /root/scripts/setiathome") || exit 1 When I run the following grep command, I get two matches: server:~ # ps x | grep "/bin/bash /root/scripts/setiathome" 9436 pts/0 S 0:00 /bin/bash /root/scripts/setiathome 9445 pts/0 S 0:00 grep /bin/bash /root/scripts/setiathome The first match (process 9436) is what I'm testing for. If the first match is not running, grep exits with a zero since the second match is found. How do I eliminate the second match? Thanks! Christopher Reimer

Which programs to skip at startup and how.

I notice that my new installation of SuSE 7.1 runs through a long list of programs at boot time. I am wondering whether some of the programs being run are superfluous. For example inetd, AFAIK, is an internet server, right? But all I need is a normal desktop set up (Browser , Email, Word processing, the gimp, Office apps). Surely I don't need to run a server, and not doing so could speed up my system. I have installed the basic (+office) option with 7.1. Are there likely to be many programs I could skip at startup. If so, which ones are they, and how would I go about removing them from the list. -- CF
