dep, I pulled a few strands of hair out with the OPL3SAx in my Toshiba laptop as well. But it's working fine now. First, try running 'autoconf' (as root via the terminal). Autoconf is ALSA's sound configurator. I couldn't get it to work in SuSE 7.1, but in 7.3 it picked my OPL3SAx up. I'm not at my home computer, but I'll post my modules.conf when I get a chance (in case 'autoconf' doesn't work for you.) Eric __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? upgrade to 2.4.16 causes PMCIA failure

Hello, I am running SuSE 7.2 on an IBM thinkpad. I was running kernal 2.4.7 and everything was running fine. I have a lucent wavelan wireless adapter. I upgraded to 2.4.16 and now I get errors regarding PCMCIA and my wavelan adapter. I have upgraded the PCMCIA pacakge and the modutils package when I upgraded the kernel. I have gone back to 2.4.7 :( Anyone had any success with this kind of config? IBM THinkpad 600X, Lucent Orinoco adapter, DVD drive. Thanks lach

HOW TO PRINT COLORS

SuSE PRO 7.3 installed and working on my DELL GX110 mini-tower computer. I have an EPSON STYLUS COLOR C60 connected through a USB cable. SuSE detects the printer correctly as well as the USB cable. I tried to configure the printer using either "lp" or"cups". My problem is that no matter the dpi configuration or the driver I choose the test image printed out is always only black/white. Actually when I configured the printer as "lp" the choice of some high-resolution drivers caused SuSe configuration interface to lose control of the printer that kept printing pages and pages of wierd characters and symbols. Not even turning it off and on again could reset it. I finally could kill the printing process by unplugging the USB cable and shutting down the computer. As my printer supports colors and can print colors when driven by Windows 2000 (I tested that) my question for you is HOW CAN I GET A COLOR PRINTOUT withe SuSE ???

Disappearing xconsole

A quick tip. If your ever in KDE and your xconsole disappears, you do a ps aux | grep xconsole and you see it's running but can't actualy find it. Do this: reduce the virtual desktops to 1. Log out saving settings, log back in.. viola. have a great new year.

SuSE 7.3 Locking Up

Problem: After a little over 1 day of uptime my system locks up. The keyboard is not functional (keys do not work) and the display is forzen. This mostly happens when I'm using 3D acceleration playing SOF. Once using YOU and once playing Max Bomber. System: GA-7DXR motherboard, AMD 761 Memory/PCI/AGP Controller. VT82C686B PCI Super-I/O integrated Peripheral Controller. Video Card: TNT M64 card with is reported to be a Vanta card by Sax2. Using latest nvidia drivers (1.0.2313) What I have done to try and solve this problem: disableapic in lilo.conf using NVIDIA AGP driver as well as XFree driver 2x AGP as well as 4X Arranged PCI cards so interrupts are not shared Checked the files warn, messages, and XFree86.0.log in /var/log. The following is cut from XF86Config Section "Device" BoardName "Vanta" BusID "1:5:0" Driver "nvidia" Identifier "Device[0]" Screen 0 VendorName "NVidia" Videoram 32768 Option "NvAGP" "1" EndSection I don't really know what to try next and am looking for ideas as to what may be locking the keyboard and display.

Graphics Card

Hi All, I'm planning on doing a fresh install of 7.3. Before I do, I want to replace my video card with something more current. I am looking at three AGP cards: ATI Radeon 7200 Matrox G450 VisionTek GeForce2-MX400 I'm not a hard core gamer, and I don't _really_ need dual monitor support (although I wouldn't mind it), so blazing 3D performance and dual monitor capability are not critical issues for me, but I would really like a clean install. As far as I can tell from the equipment database, archives, and web searching, these cards should be well supported. Any comments pro or con on any of these cards, or graphics card choices with 7.3 in general, will be greatly appreciated. Thanks and Happy Holidays, Malcolm

Strange network problems

I'm having some strange things happen on my network at home that I can't seem to put a finger on. The main problem is this, all of a sudden I can't ping, ssh, telnet, or http from any of my SuSE Linux boxes. I can do all of the above from my Win2000 laptop but I can't do it from Linux. Here is my configuration: A Netgear RT314 DSL Router which connects to my internal network and my Telocity Gateway. On the internal network I have 2 SuSE 7.2 machines, 1 newly installed SuSE 7.3, 1 Win2000 laptop and a Win98 desktop. I can work just fine on the Win98 Desktop and the Win2000 laptop but I'm having problems on all my Linux boxes. This is strange because it was working before and nothing has changed. I noticed the problem after I installed 7.3 two nights ago and tried to access the net. At first Konqueror was running REAL SLOW and I found that strange because IE wasn't having any problems with speed (also I never had a problem with Linux or Konqueror before). Now I simply can't access anything by hostname. Bottom line is this, I can ping numerical IP addresses but not by hostnames. nslookup and dig work just fine in resolving hostnames from the Linux boxes. I'm running my own DNS server and it seems to be working just fine. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

[SLE]can't find glib-config

this always happens - I'm trying to install, say, anything, and the install fails because it can't find glib-config. Now, I know that the lastest glib package is installed in SUSE 7.3, because when I try to install it, I get "already installed". so, I use Konquerer, locate, find to find the glib-config. Konquerer locks my machine down for a night,, and in the morning, returns no results; and locate and find neither locate nor find glib-config. where is it? -- regards, kambot -> http://medianox.net

For epson inkjets, gimp-print is probably the best driver available on any operating system. In 7.3 (probably also 7.2) install the following packages: cups cups-client cups-drivers (I think that's where gimp-print is) cups-libs kups (nice configuration package) qtcups (optional, nice frontend for printing) and ideally don't install lprold (unless you have another printer that prints better that way). Note that cups-drivers is in the Utilities/Printing set. Use YaST2 to configure the printer initially. Then use kups (under kde menu: System > Tools > Cups Administration tool) to fine-tune cups. You should need to change at most media size (typically Letter or A4) and resolution (360 is fast but lower quality, 720 slow but higher quality; it's unlikely you'd want anything else for standard printing). The version of gimp-print that comes with SuSE 7.3 is 4.1.10. This is technically a development release though you are unlikely to encounter any problems. The latest stable release is gimp-print 4.2, which you can get from http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net. Note that it is in tar.gz form; so you'll have to compile it yourself. Most applications will now work as you want them. For fine tuning, set the print program for StarOffice, Netscape, etc., to qtcups. qtcups will give you a print dialog that lets you specify resolution etc., for individual print jobs. You can also use qtcups filename to print standard files. That's about it. If you use LaTeX you might want to do some additional fine tuning for dvips. JDL
