How can to mount 720kB formatted FD?

I thought in a blink of an eye to simple backup some files at a floppy disk. It seems more challencing I ever expected. I've some floppies around and use these. I started with formatting it for 1.4 MB, with the following result: dar:~ # fdformat /dev/fd0u1440 Double-sided, 80 tracks, 18 sec/track. Total capacity 1440 kB. Formatting ... done Verifying ... Read: : Input/output error Problem reading cylinder 0, expected 18432, read -1 Alright an old floppy use a lower density: dar:~ # fdformat /dev/fd0u720 Double-sided, 80 tracks, 9 sec/track. Total capacity 720 kB. Formatting ... done Verifying ... done Seems to work fine. Now mount it: dar:~ # mount /dev/fd0 /mnt mount: you must specify the filesystem type Nothing has been mounted at /mnt before, so that's not the problem. It seems something needs to be done with a tool called: setfdprm. This tool uses the config file /etc/fdprm. The latter contains the following info about 720 FD: # size sec/t hds trk stre gap rate spec1 fmt_gap 360/360 720 9 2 40 0 0x2A 0x02 0xDF 0x50 360/720 720 9 2 40 1 0x2A 0x02 0xDF 0x50 720/720 1440 9 2 80 0 0x2A 0x02 0xDF 0x50 720/1440 1440 9 2 80 0 0x2A 0x02 0xDF 0x50 360/1200 720 9 2 40 1 0x23 0x01 0xDF 0x50 720/1200 1440 9 2 80 0 0x23 0x01 0xDF 0x50 800/720 1600 10 2 80 0 0x2A 0x02 0xDF 0x2E It looks like info is missing about 80 track 720kB formatted floppy disks. So I executed: setfdprm -p /dev/fd0 720 9 2 80 0 0x2A 0x02 0xDF 0x50 Though with the same result: dar:/etc # mount /dev/fd0 /mnt mount: you must specify the filesystem type Q: how can a 720 kB formatted FD be mounted (I can mount 1.4MB formatted FDs)? Thank you for the quick response. However, I am still having problems. I added the session kde3 but when I login to kde3, it starts up and gets as far as the "welcome to kde3" screen and saying that is is loading the desktop when it suddenly goes back to the login menu. I looked in /opt/kde3/bin/startkde and that is already set to $HOME/.kde3 any ideas ? Wrong entry in /etc/route.conf

Since yesterday I have upgraded with a new install to 7.3 and apart from some small dificulties I like the improvements over 7.2 One of the small problems is that I get followin info: wrong entry in /et/route.conf default 0.0.0.0 I have no idea what to do and after reading some howto's and man pages I am still more confused. I am not able to ping my second machine Slackware installed and from there ping is also not possible because I think I have not yet allowed that machne on my newly installed 7.3 figuration. What should have been in route.conf ?

KDE Not Saving Settings

I now have 7.3 installed and updated completely - 2.4.16, 2.2.2. But my user account wasn't saving my settings (window size, location) at all. (same problem in 2.2.1 and 2.1) So I set aside /home/hydra/.kde and symlinked it to .kde2 and then it remembered sizes/locations. But now it saves the sessions cumulatively. In other words when I log off with one konsole & konqueror and save settings, when I log in I get 6 konquerors and 5 konsoles, different sizes from old sessions. AND MY SUSE MENU *POP* MAGICALLY TURNED TO A FOLDER ICON, WITH NOTHING IN IT! WTF?!?! HAAAALLLP! My *whole*Suse*menu* is gone, as well as Work and Admin menus! How does this system work? Also I would like my user account and my root account K settings to be the same. (color, theme, etc) In Suse7.2 I tried symlinking most root .kde2 files and dirs to my user files (not tmp or socket), but THEY STILL REMAINED DIFFERENT SETTINGS. How can this be? Spirits and ghosts? I tried moving config files from root to /opt/kde/share, but KDE ERASED THEM THERE for me. While we're talking, I wonder why my parallel port's not being recognised. IBM Stinkpad a22p. It was set to ECP in BIOS and the ECP module was loading, but I changed BIOS to EPP, and the log is silent of hardware or driver notice. Is a change needed in modules.conf? With Suse's different structure, I'm a bit afraid of mucking. No apparent way to config parallel port. Why make an intermediate meta-layer (char-major)? My scanner's not being recognized, after I went through the Suse Config Guide, but that's another story. Getting concerned as I need to be working rather than configuring.

Linux training/certification questions

I have been poking around looking for some formal Linux certification or training. A few questions for the group... especialy list-members in in Europe. Has anyone done the Linux certification thing? Is getting an LPI (Linux Professional Institute) certification worth it? I am at a bit of a disadvantage living where I do - the Netherlands - and not speaking the local language well enough to be able to handle a training course in Dutch... I need a course in English. So, the next question is, does anyone know of any Linux courses/certifications available in the Netherlands, Belguim, or Germany (close to the Dutch/Belgian border preferably but not absolutely necessary) that are given in English? Any pointers would really be appreciated. I have found one place in the UK that offers what looks to be a fairly intensive course and LPI certification... anyone have any experience with this company? ( http://training.gbdirect.co.uk/courses/linux/ ) The cost of traveling to the UK for a week, plus the high cost of the course (over 1200 GBP) makes me a bit cautious to jump at this one.... what is the lates kdebase for suse, in the kde supplementary i dont see kdebase however yast2/you upgrade only to kdebase 2.1.1 i see a bucnch of kde2.2 there but not kdebase TIA

Okay Eirk, I have solved the problem. I DID NOT use Volker's script again. I found 2 start and kill scripts in /etc/init.d/rc5.d for vmware. One was apparently from the initial install of vmware express. I got rid of that, as well as got rid of all the networking hoopla, just using bridged (but host-only shows up too), and now only get one instance of the modules being loaded, and upon reboot, no issues that I can see. I remember from another mailing list, that VMware 3.0 should not require Volker's scripts, as long as still do the header file part. Regards, Keith B. TVcard install in Yast2, SuSe7.3

As I said, I like the improvements of 7.3. My parallel Zip drive was automatically recognized. The problems with the Atapi CD, RW seem to solved. But for now I have no TV. The TV card was configured by me during the new instalation. It is an old Hauppage card. I found out that it did not work and from my long wrestling with the card during my 7.2 setup I know that instead of pll 0 this card, a late revision needs the input pll 1. The change in Yast2 did not work out so that I looked into modules.conf where I found that the respective lines for the card initialization where not unmarked. Does 7.3 have its TV card configuration in another place? Or should I unmark the inputs or bttv and use depmod -a, rmmod bttv and modprobe bttv as before? My first try did not bring any changes in the card behavior. The result is still a black TV screen ;-(.
