This is a good thing, people will actually have to buy software. They'll find M$ unaffordable and look at alternatives. This means Linux, FBDS, etc... For all the complianing the M$ does about piracy, bootlegs have been one of M$' best friend - insofar that it help perpetuate the ubiquity of their product base, which ends up making their market share simply by this fact. Like they say in show business: "good publicity or bad publicity - all publicity is GOOD". Likewise for M$. Whether or not the copies of the M$ products are legit or bootlegs - they M$ products all the same. This helps them perpetuate the opium for the masses of their product. However, money makes the world go 'round and if many of those using pirated SF would actually have to pay for this stuff (e.g. PhotoShop professional, 3DMax, M$ Office, etc..) then alternatives like the GIMP, Moonlight, OpenOffice - StarOffice - Koffice will at least garner a fair amount of new converts. Win4Lin 3 and 2.4.16/SuSE 7.3

Hello, and Happy New Year when it comes. Does anyone have experience of running Win4Lin 3 on Mantel's 2.4.16 kernel? I've tried applying the 2.4.16 patch from the Netraverse site as per their instructions - patch -p1 Kernel-Win4Lin3-2.4.16.patch >&2>& patch.log - and the patch command just freezes, not returning to a shell prompt. Needless to say, the kernel doesn't get patched! I've also tried this on a generic 2.4.16 kernel with the same result. Anyone got suggestions as to how I solve this? Thanks David

Erik, It failed! :^(. But, I think my problem is that the vmware modules get loaded twice on bootup. No problems with the first loading, but then fails on the second load with this message: insmod: a module named vm* already exists (for each module) VMware[init]: vmnet*: No such device (for each vmnet, 8 & 1 in my case) modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module vmnet* (for each vmnet) Any ideas where to look and how to get rid of the second loading? Hi, It removes the files completely. /usr/lib/modules/vmware/source is empty, as well as /usr/lib/vmware/modules/vmware-ws-1142-for-2.4.7a. Then I installed the rpm using -ivh and it put the files back in /usr/lib/vmware/source. I'll reboot now to see what happens and get back to you. Regards, Keith B. Erik, I have SuSE 7.3 and had VMware Express and used Volker's HowTO. I upgraded to Workstation 3.0 and used Volker's HowTO. It worked well unitl I had to reboot and then it would not work not matter what. I deleted and reinstalled Wkstn 3.0 this time and DID NOT use Volker's HowTO. It is running fine, but I have not shutdown and rebooted yet. I guess you could go either way. spilled wine on keyboard

This may be OT but this list has been very helpful in the past. I have the official Pro version of SuSE 7.1 and would like to install it on a Dell Inspiron laptop that a friend will give me. It is out of warrantee. Someone had spilled wine on the keyboard. It works if you hook up an external keyboard so the internal circuits are ok. Any suggestions on how to proceed with the cleanup? Does the keyboard on the laptop came as one unit or are the keys integrated to a circuit board? Any help would be appreciated.

Choose a specific subject Many experienced people on this list receive such a lot of emails, they will 'automatically' delete messages with a non-specific subject (e.g. 'one question' or 'help me' or 'newbie problem'). E.g. if your update from 7.2 to 7.3 made you lose your internet, then write: 'Update 7.2 -> 7.3 lost my internet connection'. 2. (Try to) Make a short post For same reasons as stated in (1). If you think of a mailer with a splitted window, message list on top, and preview below, it would be most convenient if the whole message fitted in the preview. Cut surplus stuff when replying, especially the SuSE mailinglist information will be re-attached each time, so just delete it. To make it clear, cuts can be marked with (...) or [...] Reply only to list (good email clients offer you this option) and not to all to avoid duplicates. If your email client has no reply-to-list option, then just hit reply and change the recipient to SuSE list <suse-linux-e(a)suse.com> 3. If you are not familiar with English, maybe a mailing list in your native language is also existing? 5. Threading Post your question by means of 'New Message'. Do not reply to an arbitrary post, erase the subject, and fill in a new one. Advanced mailers have the 'threaded view' feature which sorts messages the way they belong to one another, and this gets messed up if another issue comes up in the old thread. Maybe your message will then be inside a longish thread which 3/4 of the list is already ignoring, the damage will then be with you for losing answers! To make it clear: A thread is a history of replies and their dependencies and therefore reply should only be used within one thread and not to start a new one. 6. Be friendly :-) No explanations required, I hope :-) Mark jokes with :-) or :o) [depending on what kind of nose you have:-)] to make it clear you are joking. Not everybody will automatically understand it, especially if it's complicated - this is an international list and not everyone is an English professor.
