I have had mixed experiences with the X setup utilities in SuSE with getting 'out of the box' good displays. Almost invariably, this has come down to Sax2 making incorrect, but safe guesses as to the hsync and vsync of the monitor. Looking up the _real_ values from the manufacturer's spec, and manually inserting them (expert options in Sax2, or something similar) has always done the trick. Firewall service masquerading ftp

Hi, I have a SuSE 7.3 firewall protecting a 192.168 LAN. I use SuSEfirewall2 on it. Now if I want to provide any services on one of the local machines, I need to 'forward masquerade' the access. I understand that this potentially dangerous but want to do it regardless. For a local FTP server, what would I have to do? Only forward masq port 21 (assuming passive mode) or is there anything else I need to consider? E.g. in firewall2.rc.config: FW_FORWARD_MASQ="0.0.0.0/0,192.168.100.102,tcp,21". Previously, I had installed for the same purpose the ftp-proxy from the SuSE sponsored(?) proxy-suite. However it appears not to be compilable against 2.4.17 kernels - it includes rather staggering numbers of kernel includes. Am I correct to presume that ftp-proxy is for 2.2 kernels only? It would be nice, but probably asking too much, if the 'obsolete' little porjects could just stand up and declare themselves obsoleted by such-and-such better alternative. More often then not I stagger across the search results only to find things which are no longer applicable or even abandonned and fail to mention they are part of the past, but not the future. Cross Distribution RPMS

Hi Guys I hope there are some people on the list who are RPM wizzards, as I'm having a little trouble getting some of my rpms to compile on multiple Distributions. Namely SuSE and RedHat, as I have yet to try any others. Now, using the spec file that works on RedHat I get the following when I do rpm -ta on SuSE (7.3) :~/scratch # rpm -ta bleh-0.1.10test2.tar.gz error: failed build dependencies: MySQL-devel is needed by perdition-0.1.10test2-1 MySQL-shared is needed by perdition-0.1.10test2-1 openldap-devel is needed by perdition-0.1.10test2-1 zlib-devel is needed by perdition-0.1.10test2-1 Now, I have been informed (although I am having trouble finding doco on it) that rpm should infact auto pick a different spec file for SuSE/LSB than redhat. The package infact has two .spec files. One for redhat and one for lsb (SuSE). My undersanding is that rpm -ta bleh-0.1.10test2.tar.gz should cause rpm to find packaging/lsb/bleh.spec, as opposed to packaging/redhat/6.2/bleh.spec. The lsb/bleh.spec has the correct dependencies for SuSE, and works fine if I do a rpm -ba lsb/bleh.spec HELP! How do I make this work??? I have spent the last 3 hours reading everything on rpm.org including all of "Maximum RPM" but it's all basically assuming you are running RedHat specific packages. I have also looked at rpm spec file conditionals, but I'm not sure if they can do what I need... KDE 2.2.2: anyone else with bugs in packages from SuSE

I have upgraded to KDE 2.2.2 using the official SuSE rpms for SuSE 7.1. I have 4 new "bugs": 1- as root konqueror takes 10-15 seconds to respond to any user input (mouse, keyboard) 2- general behaviour of konqueror for normal users is like Netscape 4.x: slow reactions (although not as bad as for root) and the occasional freeze 3- the KDM login dialog defaults to show a clock and list of users. I cannot disable this anymore in KDE Control Center 4. the generic "save as" dialog box displays a huge text field (3 times the normal height) where you're supposed to enter the filename KDE 2.2.1 worked like a charm. KDE 2.2.2 is definitely no improvement (at least not in my case). Anyone else with this sort of problems? How can I get rid of them?

This might have been mentioned before, but I was wondering what happened to dma transfer in SuSE? Used to be able to start and stop this via rcdma or soemhting similer, has this been integrated now? Matt

yast dependencies

Hi YaST reports that I need kdesupport-devel since I updated SuSE 7.2 kde 2.1 to kde-2.2.2. -- YaST1 -- Package 'kdesupport-devel' is required by other installed packages. It should be installed too. How can I find out which rpm package needs kdesupport-devel? I know how to find out the dependencies of a particular package, but not in reverse. Thanks Rich -- Powered by SuSE Linux Richie Rich
