Hi! Thanks for your answer! But how shall I do this? After an update the machine automaticly reboots... Should I reboot from the CD somehow? I figure, after the reboot I should press "TAB" and then write "manual", let yast start, load the SCSI-drives and cancel using "Ctrl-C", is the command-line there after that and the commands you suggest could be executed? (Can't access the server for the moment, so I can't try this just yet). Very greatful for clearification. Thanks! The SCSI drivers are not compiled into the kernel but have to be loaded from the initial ramdisk aka initrd. First check that INITRD_MODULES in /etc/rc.config lists the needed SCSI driver. If not, add it. Then run mk_initrd which will create the initrd and then call lilo which has to record the position of the initrd on the disk. Next time you boot all should go well.

YaST2

For some reason when using YaST2 to configure a modem a sub window pops up with the words initialising then immediatly exits. I get an error message that y2bignfat has sementation faulted. This only appears to seg fault when configuring a modem. Digging down through the code (yast2 line 62) the arguments passed to y2bignfat are something like module (lan), arg2 (.modem), client (qt). y2bignfat works OK if arg2 is (.lan), but always fails if it is (.modem). I don't know where else to look now, I'm stumped. Can anybody help. (By the way I am using SuSE 7.2 and I know this used to work) I have re-loaded yast2 from the original suse disks but still have the problem. Regards, Phil Burness

Samba as PDC: second part

Hi List, I finally succeded making my samba run as PDC. I upgraded it to 2.2.1a, which is much better than the former, and I put the netlogon share "guest ok". Now every machine can access my PDC with no problem. I have another problem though: I am not able to browse in my LAN.am I can see the server's share with net view //linux I can browse by hand, but I cant browse automatically in windows. If someone is interested I can send my smb.conf Again, I am following the Using Samba online book, section Troubleshooting. But I did not get any help from it to solve this problem. Praise

Hi again! I asked you before how to install SuSE 7.2 from the net, thank you all for your answers! Now is the situation as followed; We have succesfully installed a minimal SuSe 7.1 from CD's. (But it took som time for us to realize that the system didn't hang after reboot, you just have to press alt+F1 to se the textversion of yast2, cause we didn't install X...) Anyway. Now we want 7.2 or at least the latest versions of Apache, PHP4, MySQL and Jakarta. So we tried to run yast2 and chose "Software / System Update" and as source we chose the correct directory at ftp.sunet.se. We couldn't update the system while running it, we had to restart with the CD and then start over. Ok, that's fine. We selected all the packages we wanted to update and everything seemed to update ok. Then we were told to choose a new kernel. Ok. But after an reboot there was an Kernel panic : Unable to mount root. (Apparently the SCSI-drives were not loaded in the new kernel...) Then we tried a new approach. We reinstalled 7.1 minimal. Then we downloaded some RPM's from the 7.2-directory at ftp.sunet.se. We were able to succesfully upgrade Apache to version 1.3.19, but then PHP4 stopped working... And when we tried to run the mod_php4.rpm it didn't work cause it wanted some zillion other RPM's - unclear which one's... So, no we are stuck. We are satisfied running 7.1 and the 2.4 kernel that comes with it, an upgrade to 7.2 is not that important. But we want to upgrade Apache, PHP4, MySQL and Jakarta to the latest versions. HOW? rpm version 4

RPM version 3 still reigns supreme: most (all?) RPM distros use it, stable, it's the standard (LSB), and I could find very little rpm v4 documentation. What are the advantages of rpm version 4? Everything I could want in a package format is already in version 3: package signatures via GnuPG / PGP, dependencies, etc. There's one thing I'm looking for, though: better compression since RPM uses cpio, afaik. [CD-BURN] mkisofs

Hello folks, I burn backups from my 4 NFS-shared servers here regularly, therefore I create iso images using mkisofs with options -J -r -v -o file.iso and that's alright so far, I get my image. But what I find annoying is that after burning I find my files with little changes: For instance, the german special letters like for OE, AE and so forth all all changed to "_". Is there a way around that? Another thing what I am going to face tonight is how to compare entire directories with sub-dirs, meaning like (raw edit) fc -options /dir1/* /burnt_cd/ Has anyone such a command handy? Would save me loads of time since I finish work very late these weeks. Many thanks. I think /boot must be ext2. The thing I am not sure about is how to create the resier partitions manually, before copying the contents of the old hard disk on to the new one. Is it possible from the rescue disk? Samba on Dos?

Hi all... I'm trying to setup samba between Linux and a DrDos 7.03 machine. The Dos machine does not have W$ on it at all. It has the A and C drives. I would like to have it see my Linux machine as the D drive. It looks simple on the Linux side, but how can I (or can I?) do this on the Dos side. I've looked at the manuals in SuSE 7.2 and it's mainly for M$ windows. You can boot from CD 1 (of your SuSE distro), and at the lilo prompt, type in: yast1 that'll bring you to the text-based version of yast.
