Hi everyone, I'm pleased to announce a new Linux-related site I'm working on - Open for Business (open.uninetsolutions.com) It has already been mentioned on LX-Talk a few days ago, but I was hoping perhaps some more people from here would be willing to stress test it before I start publicly announcing the site. Here is the concept that both myself and Anders Johanssen came to (seperately I might add, which to mean shows even more how much this is needed) after reading an article about high Microsoft licensing fees last week: IT Managers are probably interested in moving to Linux, but they need help. They need a resource of how-tos, commentary, reviews, and news that assist them in transitioning from proprietary operating systems to Linux. So, this is where Open for Business comes in. OfB's main section is built in a e-zine fashion, and will include the items I mention above (I've already received three content submissions). OfB also has a Discussion Forums section that will assist IT workers in migrating to Linux, and also with post migration problems. So anyway, if this sounds interesting to anyone here, please go give it a test and see what you think. The content is still a little sparse, but it won't be for long. VNC & firewall - which ports to open?

Printer setup in Staroffice 5.2

Hey, Group: A couple of days ago (I think) I saw something on this or the Caldera Refugee list about changing fonts in StarOffice 5.2 The response of one of the regulars on both lists advised the postee to go to Start=>Setting=>(whatever). I don't remember the details of the posting, but they are not important to this question (except for the info about changing settings). Yesterday I installed SuSE 7.2 Pro on a second machine along side Windows. I wiped out Red Hat 7.1 and SuSE 7.2 Personal in the process (intentionally). Then I ran the setup program for StarOffice 5.2 (I have the boxed set) and then attempted to print a document in StarOffice. What I got was the document printed in 5 or 6 point type. That's when I navigated to Start=Settings=>"look, Ma, no settings." A little dialog popped up, which said "empty." My blood pressure moved up a dozen points or so, and I determined to check the other machine, which also has SuSE 7.2 Pro and StarOfice 5.2 installed. I clicked Start=>Settings=> - and was greeted with the same empty dialog. I checked the SO 5.2 Setup Guide and the User Guide as well, and found no mention of how to set up the printer. I went to www.sun.com/support and found no help there, either. I looked in all the usual places in SuSE 7.2 for relevant SO 5.2 docs and came up empty. Anyone know what the hell has happened? Did I overlook something crucial but not-so-obvious in the setup process for SO 5.2 on both machines? Any ideas? Fwd: [linux] change partitions?

Bonjour, On my laptop I have 4 primary partitions: data (hda1, 9G), /boot (hda2, 56M), /swap (hda3), Ext,d 9G. Sur mon portable j'ai 4 partitions primaires: /data (hda1, 9G), /boot (hda2, 56M), /swap (hda3), Ext,d 9G. I would like to reduce the size of hda1 9G -> 4G to install on it Win$ and recover 5G to make a Linux ext2 partition. J'aimerais réduire hda1 9G -> 4G pour y installer Winchose et récupérer les 5G pour faire une ou plusieurs partitions logiques Linux. Can somebody show the best way to follow. I imagined to suppress the swap partition, suppress hda1 partition then create new primary partition of 4G, then 2 new extended partition2 for swap and partition ext2 and install Windows on primary partition 4G. Quelqu'un peut-il m'indiquer la meilleure voie à suivre. J'ai imaginé de supprimer la partition swap, supprimer partition hda1 puis créer une nouvelle partition primaire de 4G puis une partition étendue SWAP mais il faudrait que je puisse booter Winchose. This is probably a question for the xfree list but thought I'd try here as that list appears to be silent in recent days. This section of my XF86config file has been, as follows, for months. All of a sudden X started failing because it said it could find no board at 1:5:0. I changed the BusID field to read 1:0:0 (BUS:DEVICE:FUNCTION) and it started working again. My question is what could make this device number change?? Lol, this is highly unlikely since not many viruses exist for Linux. The only potential damage that could occur is if you are logged in as user "root". The most severe damage that can occur for a non-root user is having their "home/$USER" direcory deleted. > Another one is a possible problem with the driver for > the ext2 and/or the SCSI driver. There is no "driver" for ext2. Ext2 is simply the layout of the disk system. And I very much doubt the problem lies with your SCSI driver since you said that the rest of your files were intact. problem with mk_initrd

Hello, I applied SuSE's patch to the kernel source for 2.4.10, compiled and installed a minimal kernel without problems (except a few modules not relevant here). Then I tried to make the initial ram disk. 54 root% mk_initrd using "/dev/sda1" as root device (mounted on "/") creating initrd "//boot/initrd" for kernel "//boot/vmlinuz" (2.4.10-64GB-SMP) failed to mount image No initrd was written. Can someone suggest why? I don't want to go poking around with changes in the shell script without knowing what to look for. (In the meantime, I recompiled the kernel with the capabilities that I need when booting (scsi, ethernet, and usb main), and this works fine, without using a ram disk. jim bennett
