Segmentation Fault with Init

When my init process tries to change levels it generates segmentation faults. For example on booting to level 1, I get the following message on the console: INIT: Entering runlevel 1 Segmentation fault Master Resource Control: previous runlevel N, switching to runlevel 1 Is there any way to find out why it is generating a segmentation fault? There does not seem to be anything relevant in /var/log/messages --- Alastair

Help, I broke my MBR

Hi all! I just updated the kernel of my 7.1 pro system to 2.4.10. But in the process I obviously managed to overwrite the MBR, when trying to create a new stub file, i.e. the linux.bin file that resides in c:\ of my win2000 install. (At least that is what I think happened.) It is a dual boot machine with windogs2000 as the primary OS and SuSE 7.1 as the secondary one. (Yes, I can hear you grumbling, but I do have two other machines which runs 7.1 as their only OS.) Until recently, read half an hour ago, I used the boot manager of win2000, and I would really like to continue doing that on that machine. Now I don't get the bootmanager at all. It just starts up SuSE. //Björn

SuSE 7.2 install and USB problems

Hi, all ! A friend of mine is installing SuSE 7.2 Professional on a dual Pentium II, without USB ports, the install program complains about not detecting USB, and the setup freezes. Wireless network card not autodetecting on first install

Have just tried my first install on 7.2. Everything has gone fine except the network card. In an earlier message to this list I asked about the Lucent PCMCIA wireless LAN card. I have it installed in a PCI/PCMCIA adapter in my desktop. Someone (apologies but I no longer have the message) replied that it should be supported out of the box. For one reason or another it isn't and I was hoping for some help in diagnosing why. Is the problem the adapter, the card, whatever. Any help greatly appreciated. Jason

Thanks for the replies. Here are some of the resources so far suggested : linux.nf/stepbystep/html . This offers a set of NHF - or 'Newbeized Help Files, put together by people who are themselves newbies, and have found out how to do things the hard way. There is also the first in what promises to be a series of articles by Andy Donohoe, entitled 'The Learning Curve : A Beginner's Guide to Linux Proficiency. This looks as if it could turn out to be very useful. There's another page for beginners at http://linuxstart.com/category.php?file=/newbies/ , where you can find links to a set of tutorials such as 'The Beginner's Guide to Unix' or uses of the Gimp. At first glance, this seems a pretty rich resource. Both sites give you links to LUGs - unfortunately for my own case, I discover I have to go live in Toulouse. A couple of books have been recommended, and there is a section at Amazon.com.uk for Linux newcomers with a few more. I'm not sure how far any of these can be of much help to the person who uses Windows without bothering too much about what goes on underneath. This list's Bruce Marshall sent me to a FAQ he's working on for absolute beginners which looks as if it will help the newcomer through those first days after installation : most debutant texts seem to spend a long time on installation and I'm not sure that it's the way to go (which is why I'll probably not be purchasing the Idiot's guide or 'Linux for Very Stupid People') - the real difficulties in getting things to work properly demand some knowledge of the system itself - the easy stuff can now be left to YaST or whatever. Bruce leaves that to one side and takes you on from the first screen you see once installation's over. I disagree with you. I specifically, as newbie, choose the nVidida based cards because they were listed as supported and I already had one under windoze, an 8 MB TNT Riva, but soon upgraded to an TNT2 and _HAVE NOT_, repeat _HAVENOT_, had any trouble and I don't do gaming.
