And this from a "native" english speaker ? My point, with tongue inserted firmly in cheek here, is that even a NATIVE english speaker (which I am as well) can make mistakes - I'm less tollerant of poor grammar ans spelling than most people I correspond with, especially if it's from NATIVE english speakers. Give the "non-Natives" a fair go, hey ? You ought to see what a hash I make of German at times (I know enough to get my face slapped - and do on occasion !!) Microsoft and the Stamp Act

I have recently hit an extremely frustrating realization regarding Microsoft's continuing monopoly of the desktop computing environment. In order for me to distribute my resume on line, I am, for all intents and purposes required to poses a Microsoft OS. This is due to the fact that I must ensure that my code runs and renders properly under IE, or MS Word. In addition, I am required to have a Microsoft OS in order to do any kind of serious Web development. It has now been over a year since they were found in violation of antitrust statutes, and yet they continue to consolidate their tyrany over the computing industry without any adverse consequence, injunction, or punishment for their crimes. It seems very few people appreciate the significance of what is going on. I am completely beside myself in outrage. There is no point in insisting this should be illegal. That has already been determined. It is illegal, nonetheless, it continues unchecked. The longer they are able to forstall the consequences of the judgment against them, the greater the advantage they have due to their crimes. I truly fear that they will be able to drag this out to the point where they have completely destroyed all alternatives. This situation has a similarity to one of the most important incidents leading to the American Revolution. That incident is the Stamp Act imposed on the American colonies by the King of England. The stamp act required that paper used for most forms of comerse, communication, and official business bear a stamp indicating a tax had been paid to the Crown. Today's medium of communication is more and more becoming the desktop operating system, and particularly the internet browser. In 1997 Netscape declared their intention to build a cross platform browser which would provide a uniform interface for all operating systems. Microsoft, realizing the threat to their existing monopoly, dumped IE on the market with the stated intent of running Netscape out of business, and in particular, to prevent Netscape from succeeding in their effort at establishing true platform independence. In order for me to do business, we are required to pay Microsoft for the means of communication. The government established to protect us against such crimes has, thus far, not been able to effectively defend our interests. To me the requirement that I pay Microsoft in order to conduct business is a tax forced upon me without representation through elected delegates. -- Open Source Software depends on your support. Hi, Does anyone know where I can get a list of all the SuSE 7.3 packages and their versions? www.distrowatch.com has quite a bit, but I want to know what version of LVM 7.3 will be using. Thanks! PS: I'm caving in on buying 7.3 . . . ;)

Unfortunately, companies need to pay for more than just the physical cost of their products. R&D, salaries, as well as a profit margin for retailers all contribute to the cost base. Also, they have to make a profit to keep the shareholders happy. Based on what I have seen of the package with 7.2, the full version seems like pretty good value. To get an upgrade without the documentation at a slightly lower cost also seems fine. How did you write the test script? Using Windows? It's possible that you have an ASCII CR at the end of each line, e.g. /usr/bin/perl^M. Or your path to Perl is wrong. I can't imagine that it's not /usr/bin/perl but check using which perl in a console window. Darned Dancing Disks

Hi Folks, One of the stupidest things I've ever seen is the way IBM-PC derived motherboards change SCSI disk assignments when disks are added or removed. I just finished a nice SuSE 7.2 installation on a TYAN Thunder K7 using the internal SCSI controllers and a PCI Adaptec SCSI-2 board for the CDRom and a JAZ drive. I also installed an IDE disk to host Win-2K. All went well, I could use the nice SuSE lilo screen to select either Linux or Win-2k for booting. Life was good and I was almost ready to deliver the system. Alas, I forgot to plug the JAZ drive into the controller. When doing this, the JAZ disk appeared as /dev/sda, with the original boot disk now appearing as sdb. Kernel-panics quickly ensued. I fiddled with mounting labels in fstab instead of specifying the actual /dev/xxx devices, but lilo knows nothing of this. The swap partitions also danced and you can't label a non-ext2 partition. If the new disks would only appear after the existing ones, all would be well. Alas, the PCI scsi controller appears as SCSI-0, in front of the built-in ones, thus all disks on that controller will push all the others into oblivion. Any suggestions? Should I be using G4 systems instead? Regards, Lew Wolfgang
