KDE doesn't login any but root

Fellows, I've got a SuSE 7.0 system with KDE2. I don't what I've done, but none but root can login using any X GUI. Console logins work OK. Any X login just results in the X server being restarted, and in /var/log/messages I only find rows like "session started for user lennartb, service xdm" immediately followed by "session finished for user lennartb, service xdm". What to do? Where to search for logs? I suspect a permission problem, but without any error messages I'm lost... (root can do X logins perfectly OK) /Lennart Börjeson

I am going to attempt to install Linux on my NT workstation here at work and would like to free up some disk space. What's a good utility to do this? I've looked at FIPS and it doesn't appear to do what I'm looking for. Is there something with NT I have to do first? Thanks, Daniel

Well... actually Yast2 does run in a console. Kill your x server and give it a shot. 2.4.0 problems

Here is what I did: 1. Went to 2.2.16.SuSE and ran xconfig and saved the config file to /usr/src. 2. Went to 2.4 and ran xconfig and read in the config file, then built it, installed it, booted it. It boots fine. However now it can't find most of the modules. I went in and looked and the modules are in a different directory structure than 2.2.16. For example, most of the modules reside in /lib/modules/2.4.0/kernel. At this point I started creating symlinks all over in there trying to get it to a semi-2.2.16 structure. My question is this: is this the proper way to do this? I can't help, but I do have a question. Where does Lexmart furnish drivers? Off their website, in the box with the printer? NEED printer help!!

I have a Lexmark Z52 printer at home and here at Cornell. 'Works VERY well at home with the Lexmark driver. By the way, Lexmark FURNISHES Linux drivers for ALL of their laser printers! Anyway, here I can print a test page via the Lexmark driver setup, however, I get an error in my /var/log/messages log for lp and lexmarkz52 when printing from any application, or from command line. Yes, I know....the 1 thing in Linux that SHOULD be completely rewritten is the way it does printing, but I really need to get this sucker fixed and printing! 'Anyone have any ideas? still can't get www.suse.com

I still can't get on www.suse.com 1. I sent a message to my ISP and he tried to get on but he gets no response so he claims it's a problem on the other server site . I can go on any site with no problem. 2. In the past I received about 60 messages from suse-linux-e and now I get 0. I got on www.suse.de/en/ and tried to get on any list. When you try to go on the list it goes to www.suse.com where all the lists are and I get no response. 3. I can't send e-mail to suse. 4. I am using netscape 7 to read my mail and in the inbox there are no messages but if you look at the left panel, there are "16 unread and 1 total". Very strange. When I get new mail and delete all the mail I still have "16 Unread and 1 total". Where are they? Are these lost suse.com messages? 5. Is there any way to forward suse-linux-e messages through suse.de/en/ to my ISP cybercomm.net? Thanks in advance jozien

Netscape once again...:-/

After making a new SuSE 7.0 installation I ran into all of the typical 'Netscape in SuSE' problems, I have been evaluating Mandrake 7.2 and one of the things that worked perfect there was Netscape, so this is what I did: Uninstalled Netscape with YaST, from /cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS/ I fetched: netscape-common-4.75-9mdk.i586.rpm netscape-communicator-4.75-9mdk.i586.rpm netscape-navigator-4.75-9mdk.i586.rpm to /tmp and installed with YaST. The links are a little different: /usr/bin/netscape-communicator /usr/bin/netscape +messenger The Mandrakers have also fixed the keyboard shortcuts to Ctrl + [key] instead of the annoying Netscape standard Alt +[key]........:-) ei -- @~~ EagleIce ~ gnu4u(a)linux.nu ~~@ @~~ Running GNU/Linux & KDE ~~@
