Larger than 4G mem support

Can you get larger than 4G memory support prior to the 2.4 kernel? I just built the 2.4 kernel and it seems to be working smoothly, but I need to upgrade a core Oracle database to this kernel and am a little uneasy with the kernel being so new. Has anyone done any stress testing against the 2.4 kernel out there yet? Thanks greatly, CC

boot with win2k

hi so here is what to do (sorry for the english) * install NT * install linux * install lilo on root partition * mount your win2k partition * copie the boot sector of lilo on the win2k partition : for example : dd if=/dev/sda3 of=/dosa/bootsek.lin bs=512 count=1 (dosa is the win2k mount point) * boot win2k. cp bootsek.lin in the root of win2k * in boot.ini add : c:\bootsek.lin="linux" hope i've been clear. ask if there is something you don't understand. modutils for 2.4 Where is it?

Someone said the URL for modutils-2.4 was in the linux-2.4 README. I've read the readme's, including the one in the module subdir, and it says nothing about where to get the version of modutils that goes with the 2.4 kernel. ??? -- Scientific theories, according to Sir Karl Popper, can be "falsified," or proven wrong, by experiment. Unscientific theories -Marxist dialectical history and Freudian psychology were Popper's favorites- are formed in such a way that they cannot be falsified by data.

boot with win2k

hi, in the manual i've found some help to boot linux using the boot of NT 4.0 but it doesn't work with win2k because there is no boot.ini. is there a similar method with win2k? thanks charlie ti

Back to aic7xxx. modprobe aic7xxx loads the module all right , but the scanner still does not work, even if Yast makes a valid link /dev/scanner to /dev/sg2 (sg0 = dvd drive, sg1 = cdrw). Inserting alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx after the ide-scsi alias does not change anything: the module is not loaded on boot.. 2.4.0 and modutils?

Does 2.4.0 need a newer version of modutils then what ships with 7.0? I was able to get my modules to load with the path statement in /etc/modules.conf but that seems a hack at best. Nick

/opt, huh? well, i cannot call myself a SuSE user yet, and RedHat only rarely made use of /opt and with the following partition table, RedHat ran for years with no problems: Name Flags Part Type FS Type Size (MB) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ hda1 Boot Primary Linux ext2 106.93 / hda5 Logical Linux ext2 3150.29 /home hda6 Logical Linux ext2 213.86 /tmp hda7 Logical Linux swap 139.83 hda8 Logical Linux ext2 106.93 /var hda9 Logical Linux ext2 1077.52 /usr hda10 Logical Linux ext2 1406.53 /usr/local hda3 Primary suspend2disk 279.66 well, i guess SuSE goes at things differently, and i am starting to believe that my enthusiastic try to make everything but /boot reiserfs (p. 101 of the german manual says that SuSE's default is /boot ext2fs and everything else reiserfs) - i'll post another mail about reiserfs in a second. maybe i'll go with ext2fs for now... from the above partition table you can see: i like partitions. but somehow SuSE does it differently, and the manual doesn't help me very much. could you guys get me on track? i want the following partitions: / obviously /home 3 Gb because i have loads to store /tmp 200 Mb used for makes by root and generally useful /var 100 Mb to prevent /var/log from filling / /usr for SuSE's RPM's /usr/local definitely for my own compiles /opt well, i guess i need that i have something like 5710 Mb available, so maybe someone could give me an idea of how to split up the load between the above. specifically, i need help with /, /usr, /usr/local, and /opt because i have no idea what SuSE dumps where. could you help me split up 2410 Mb between the four? and in general, what programs go in /opt and what in /usr? on solaris it's commercial vs. non-commercial. is it the same for SuSE? thanks a bunch! martin [greetings from the heart of the sun]# echo madduck@!#:1:s@\@@@.net -- oxymoron: micro$oft works

hi when i want to resize an image with gimp nothing append! i've looked in the gimp faq but they don't mention it. is there a place where known bugs are listed? does anybody has ever seen it? thanks charlie ti

2.4.0 Kernel and reiserfs

I am running SuSE 6.4 and I use the reiserfs. I know that with the standard kernel I cannot use the reiserfs. So my question is how do I patch the new kernel (2.4.0) for use with the reiserfs? And Where would I get such a patch?
