Bootup panic!

When I try and boot into my SuSE 7.0 the bootup stops at: INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/mingetty" INIT: ID "1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes And then it repeats INIT: ID with "2", 3, 4, 5, and 6, and then it stops. Ctrl + Alt + Delete doesn't work and I have to restart manually. I do have Debian on the same box and I can get into SuSE from there. Any Ideas? Thank's, eagleice

Need help for directory install prblems with new hardware

I have the entire SuSe 7.0 ftp site on my hard drive, I had no problems doing a hard drive install making the boot/install disks. However, I have since upgraded my hardware to a Athalon 800 MHZ, ATI Xpert2000 , and Memorex 48 eide cdrom. When I try to do a hard drive install it says the directory is wrong. At first I thought it was the Maxtor ez-bios that was installed, so we removed that and reformated the 40 gig drive using the new hardware, copied the cdroms to the drive and tried the install. No go- it may be a problem with not finding a inst-img ? But I looked all over the suse ftp site but can not find one. My old version of suse 6.3 has no trouble installiong packages from the hard drive, I can upgrade everything, but if I try to do an entire install or upgrade, it complains that my version of YaST is too old and I need to use the boot disks - unfortunately the boot disks don't work. Desperation sets in, I try doing a complet install from SuSE 6.3 6 cdrom set and NO GO, it complains I don;t have enough memory for a ftp install ( need 32 megs I only have 128 megs, go figure) The install stops after the first disk complains about memory problems, the 128 megs just ain't enough according to sause 6.3. What's going on? It looks like I need to upgrade to 7.0 to use my new hardware, if I could only get the boot disk to work. My sus 7.0 ftp site is stored on /dev/hdb11/cdrom/suse Any help will be appreciated. thanks ina dvance joe ps: no time to edit, must go to work....

Upgrade Problem with LAN

I have just upgraded one of the nodes of my LAN from a rather elderly Pentium to an Athlon 750 MHz CPU (and does it only move rapidly, I'm really pleased). I'm currently running SuSE6.4/KDE2.0.1 and am very pleased with only one problem, I can no longer access my LAN The system used to access the network on boot, it no longer does this. If I manually attempt to insmod ne.o I get the following: ne.o: unresolved symbol ei_open ne.o: unresolved symbol ethdev_init ne.o: unresolved symbol ei_interrupt ne.o: unresolved symbol NS8390_init ne.o: unresolved symbol ei_close I would appreciate some assistance in resolving this problem. DHCPD on eth0:0 ?

Hello, Did anyone ever set up a DHCP server on a virtual interface (e.g. eth0:0)? I've searched the archives on the web but nothing came out of this. I've succeeded may times to set DHCPD on boxes with 2 NIC's, but this one's too hard for me. When invoking dhcpd on net device eth0:0, it complains about not being configured to listen on any interface, among other things: Jan 20 17:30:14 patagonia dhcpd: Wrote 0 leases to leases file. How to integrate pppoed into init scripts?

Hi, For SuSE Linux 7.1 or 7.2, is SuSE planning to integrate pppoed fully into the init scripts and SuSEconfig in a similar way to ISDN or other Internet connections? If not, is there a HOWTO guide to integrating init.d with /sbin/SuSEconfig and /etc/rc.config ? I did read at http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/hoe_adsl_pppoe.html that as at April 2000 and as at SuSE Linux 6.3, PPPoE for Linux was considered experimental. But it is now January 2001 and I am talking about SuSE Linux 7.1+ My models are: o /sbin/init.d/pppoed, maintained by Bernd Kaindl. This contains a reference to START_PPPOED, which I cannot find anywhere in /etc o /sbin/init.d/i4l, maintained by Karsten Keil. This contains many references to environment variables set up in /etc/rc.config.d/i4l*.rc.config I have read /sbin/init.d/README and from this, I gather that I need to: o set START_PPPOED somewhere, o link /sbin/init.d/pppoed into the boot order some time after /sbin/init.d/rc3.d/S05network, and o make sure that S05network starts my Ethernet card, which is eth0. Presumably, I do this by changing IFCONFIG_0 in /etc/rc.config to something like "eth0 up" But unfortunately I don't have the knowledge, skills, experience or time to figure it all out myself just now. I have an account with Telstra BigPond ADSL and am running the SuSE-supplied pppoed in accordance with http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/hoe_adsl_pppoe.html and the man page for pppoed. One peculiarity I found is that I had to put my ID and password into chap-secrets even though the pppoed man page said that I did not need to. Telstra BigPond ADSL uses CHAP and does not use PAP. In /etc/ppp/peers/pppoe I also had to have "refuse-pap". I will report this separately to feedback(a)suse.de as a bug in the documentation. Right now, I am starting and stopping my ADSL connection using scripts which I must run as root. These scripts work, but are a bit messy. What I would really like to do is treat PPPoE as if it were a LAN connection and always on. Hi I recently read your email as regards getting linux to support a USB modem. I have the BT ADSL package but would really like to get it running on my linux bbox but i'm encountering problems. I relative new to linux and dont really know where im going. At the moment ive recompiled the new kernel 2.4 with USB support where next ? How to configure with newer Qt libraries

Hi, I have been trying to compile a couple of applications this morning but both have bombed with a Qt problem. In the case of Quanta 2 beta 4 it reads: checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt <>= Qt 2.2.0 Beta1) (libraries) not found. Please check your installation! The Qt version on my system is 2.2.3. Could anyone advise me on how I can sort this. i presume that I add some sort of conditional statement to the command ./configure! thanks -- Stu "The specification said Windows 95 or better, so I installed Linux"

Ed, when I boot up Suse 7.0 it says that I am using Kernal 2.2.16 Is XFree86 4.0.2 somehow interpreting my kernal as 2.0.30?? I don't understand how this happened. I intalled 4.0.2 using files from XFree86.org because I was getting all these weird errors and symbolic link complaints from the rpm packages that I originally tried from the Suse ftp site. Neither SaX, nor SaX2 would work to setup Xwindow system, so I figured I may as well try to install XFree from another source. 4.0.2 is now definitely installed as you can see from the log output. But it sounds like I have a kernal problem now.
