[SLE] ipchains - seperate in-out-fwd ?

As long as ipchains is around, I've used it. I've put together quite a script to enable all of my rules and preventing anyone from breaking into my system. But now I'm a little confused. I've bought SuSE 6.4, and applied my ipchains-script. It's behaving differently now! When I used to do: ipchains -A input -d my.box 1-65535 -j DENY ipchains -A forward -s my.local.net -j MASQ Nothing worked, because all my answered MASQ-packets were denied because of the input-rule. If I apply these rules now, everything workes just as I planned it years ago: no user-initiated packets from the outside are allowed in, but answeres from my masqed packets DO come in, as they should. Have they altered ipchains or the kernel somehow? Are the input, output, forward-rules seperated now? [SLE] RPM error

Could anyone tell me how to correct the error: failed to open //var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm when I try to install using rpm? I assume it is because of the // not being a valid path. Anyone know what causes this? hi, i had the same question when i first installed SuSE. i found the answer in the support database. in short: you have to recompile the kernel and choose advanced power management + poweroff on shutdown. (i believe it's under `general settings') and set the halt command to "halt -p". (but in my setup (SuSE 6.2) the halt script checks automatically if APM is operational and if so, halts with "halt -p".) A killer installer that other distros should really look at, and it recognizes hardware like no other distro I've seen: picked up my HP CDRW on setup, automatically appended LILO with "hdc=ide-scsi", did the necessary dirty work in /etc/fstab and modules files, and it recognized the second CD drive in the system properly, as a straight IDE drive. Not bad. The problem I have with Mandrake is on my Athlon box, where I think certain underlying optimizations made with the pgcc/egcs compiler tend to make things a little unstable sometimes. Not the kernel, but X Windows and certain X apps (most certainly Netscape, which simply freezes completely every five minutes or so). I look forward to the Full Mozilla (better than the Full Monty!!! <lol>), 'cause Mozilla M14 runs amazingly well on this Athlon box. I understand there is some Athlon optimization code in the 2.3.x kernels, so I hope to see that option in the 2.4 kernel. One little thing I miss coming back to SuSE, though, is how RH/Mandrake automatically shut the power off when shutdown is complete. This can't be a difficult option to enable, just haven't been able to find out which config file and which command to add to it may enable this behavior. What command would be added to the shutdown scripts that orders the BIOS to shut off the system? If anyone out there has done this, I'd be interested in the details. This might be slightly OT. I am looking for some documentation on the system listed in the subject line. This system currently has SuSE 6.3 installed. What I am looking for is any information regarding the upgrading of the CPU to a faster one. A jumper diagram would be GREAT! Or at least a pointer to some info. I went to the AST site with no luck... I couldn't even find a reference to this system. Personally, I would rather than /usr/local contained only that stuff needed by the Linux Box itself to be stabalized and used by the Administrators. I would like to see standard locations that were to be for a new /usr/?????? for those packages that were only to be run as single user (ie one user at a time) with suitable additional access controls built into the directory structure, as well as another /usr/?????? for the packages that were to be multi-user (again with some form of control). With all the stuff happening to me in the last few weeks I plain forgot it was there. I need to look at that again. I'm with them on that part of it for sure. I do a bit of that myself. That is I make sure everyone knows I use SuSE Linux. I must admit, when I first started with GNU/Linux it was a very close call between distributions. The thing that pushed me over to SuSE was the fact the particular distribution had the latest kernel of all distributions on the bookshelf at Borders. I'm not the least bit sorry about choosing SuSE. Lot's of people talke about the technical excellence of SuSE or the number of goodies you get with SuSE. The things I like best about SuSE are the SuSE Linux Book, the sense of truness to OSS, and most of all, this mailing list. Dochost is pretty cool, and slowly but surly Geeko and his girlfriend are getting personalities.
