I had my share of cock-ups due to Red Hat Disk Druid :( Anyway, for LILO, the only requirement is that the kernel and bootfiles reside in the first 1024 cylinders of the first 2 hard disks visible to the system. Choose or make a partition satisfying the above conditions. (It only needs to be 1 LBA cylinder -- about 7MB), and set it as /boot mountpoint. Put your kernel and bootfiles in this /boot partition. All other files can go anywhere. [SLE] Networking with Win2k and SB Live for SMP

My friend, who asked me to install SuSE 6.3 for him, had ran into two troubles. He has a Win2k machine serving as a gateway for his little LAN, and although we had the right NIC modules and the right numbers for the network, it doesn't connect. The card is 3c509B, and must he disable PNP on the card inorder to get it working? The second thing is that he's so luck to have a dual 450MHz machine running a SMP kernel from the install (we will recompile later), and we tried to installl emu10k1 for the SBLive. Somehow the modprobe is trying to load the modules for the UP (uniprocessor) kernel, and it just fails to load the modules. Any pointers would be appreciated. [SLE] Help - 6.3 - Can't boot off of anything!

I installed Suse Linux 6.3 on one of my PC's several days ago. There was a warning sheet included with the distribution about problems installing LILO to the /boot partition. As suggested, I installed LILO to the MBR. Well - At present, I can't boot off of anything - Not even my (formerly) bootable cdrom, not from the bootable floppy. When I power cycle the machine, I hear a couple of seconds of action on the cdrom, and then nothing. The monitor remains black. I checked all connections - nothing seems loose. I don't remember if I rebooted the machine after my inital install. Perhaps the first time I shut the machine off was when I installed a network card a couple of days ago. It was at this time that I saw that I could not reboot the machine. I tried the network card in every PCI slot and still no boot was possible from the system, cdrom or floppy. Finally I removed the network card - Still no boot from disk, cdrom or floppy. Does anybody have any suggestions for me? Below you will find a listing of errors that were printed to the console when I ran xftp (the one from SuSE's patches for 6.3) in the foreground. I had kicked off are rather large down load and gone to sleep. I woke up and my stocks had gained 10% in after hours trading. I also had these errors on the screen. Hey, if this is going to make me money, perhaps I could live with the error messages. If y'all at SuSE could look at this code and tell me how this error made all my stocks recover from heavy losses, then formalize the algorithm, perhaps we might have a rather attractive OSS product. OTOH, the stock thing and the xftp error might not be causally related. Any thoughts? Hi All, having finally installed my CD-Re-writer (hassles with ram settings on my MB, i.e. I turned them up to much....), I decided to go to the Microsoft site, to update my version of direct x to 7a; I just have to play my Civ II, Test of Time in the best possible colour. :-) Any guesses what server software they are using? RECAP: The command './setup', which is supposed to install the package, dies with "Libc6 (RedHat glibc) 2.0 or higher required." error message. PHONE SUPPORT: Corel has no numbers available for phone support outside of their EST business hours, i.e., no 24/7 technical support line I can call. This will be especially tough on folks living outside of the USA or Eastern Canada. IVAN, a 24/7/365 phone support system at 1-877-42COREL, only offers help for WinXX or Macintosh OS apps, but not for applications running under Linux. Poor planning here... Poor planning.... KNOWLEDGEBASE SUPPORT The Office 2000 Knowledge base has in it only articles about WP8. Where are the CWO2K beta questions and answers? NEWSGROUP SUPPORT There are two news groups: one, for installation problems, has only four messages in it, all asking when CWO2K will be released. The second one, for general questions, has no messages related to installation problems. The latter may be of some help if the C_tech volunteers know SuSE 6.3 and/or are aware of the differences between the glibc SuSE uses and the glibc WO2K expects to see. Installing a different glibc on SuSE will be no small undertaking and could break the system. It is a path I will not take. Box Score: No websupport No phone support No email support No Knowledgebase support Only one functional newsgroup active CONCLUSION Corel is not ready to support CWO2K. This is suprising, since CWO2K has been in beta since August of 1999, eight months ago. Where are the logs of bug reports and installation problems from the beta testers? Surely one of them was running SuSE 6.3 and has solved my installation problem.. So, six hours after I received the package from FedEx, I find that I cannot install CWO2K on a SuSE 6.3 distro, even though Corel lists SuSE in the list of compatible Linux OSs, and I have only one active source of technical support. One chance of a successful install. Corel should lay better plans than this, or they will be getting a flood of RMA requests... [SLE] Using Lynx as a newsreader...

I got tired of NS 4.7.2 crashing so I took it off and began using Kfm, but Kfm doesn't have a newsreader. So, on a lark, I tried using lynx: lynx news://cnews.corel.ca/corelsupport.linux.office2000.installation It worked! Very nicely I might add, and VERY fast!
