[SLE] PPP-connection better than with wvdial

Hi, I use wvdial to make a PPP-connection. But I want to execute some shell scripts at each connection (fetching mails for example). Can anyone explain me how I could do such a thing ?. I also want to make the connection dockabble under Window Maker. [SLE] Home Network problem?

Hi all, I've got a two computer network setup at home. Computer #1 is Opus, it's a 486/66mhz with 8mb ram. Computer #2 is CW (Chilly Willy), it's a 486/100mhz with 32mb ram. Both are running SuSE 5.2 with kernel 2.0.33. Opus is connected to the 'net by a 56k modem. Opus has no problems with connecting to the 'net in anyway. CW is connected to Opus by twisted pair cable. I can ping to CW from Opus ok and from CW to Opus is fine. I can telnet both ways and I have a nfs file system set up between the two. My problem is when I want to use lynx, netscape, pine, ping etc from CW to the net it does not work. Lynx, and netscape just sits there with a "looking up xxxxxxxxx first" and I have to do a kill from /root. Using ping all I get is 100% package lost. [SLE] YAST 1.03.4 display problem

I recently upgraded to 6.3 and in the process of the upgrade my YAST program does not properly display the [ ]'s on the package line under Choose/Install Packages -> Change/Create Configuration ... For example I get i aaa_base SuSE Linux base package instead of [i] aaa_base SuSE Linux base package I've tried reinstalling YAST several times but to no avail. Hi to all :) On /etc/diald.conf and at the parameter connect you MUST use the chat script and not a ppp script. Diald starts pppd by itself. When you put it at connect then diald thinks that this is the chat script and wait for the chat script to finish. pppd doesn't exit and the diald (using alarm system call) thinks that the chat script timed out. Look at the man page also to double check it. But if you cannot make it work there is an alternative method but that method requires that the ISP you use will drop the connection after some idle time that you will specify (at least this worked with my ISDN dial-up). Add a line at inittab like this: pd:23:respawn:/usr/local/bin/myppp where /usr/local/bin/myppp is a shell script like the following: #!/bin/sh exec pppd call my-isp where my-isp is the a file like the following in the /etc/ppp/peers directory: updetach /dev/ttyS1 115200 crtscts connect '/usr/sbin/chat -f /etc/ppp/YOUR-CHAT-SCRIPT' noauth ipcp-accept-local ipcp-accept-remote defaultroute lock asyncmap 0 idle 30 noipx demand persist holdoff 5 user YOURUSERNAME The above starts from init the pppd and creates the ppp0 interface but does not dial. When you ask something from the Internet only then the pppd starts dialing and connect to your ISP. The only problem I had at the begginig (and that is why you ISP must disconnect you after some time idle) is that the active-filter parameter in pppd doesn't work. And you have some icmp traffic at the ppp0 interface so I couldn't take advantage of the idle parameter of pppd. Any hints on that ? Hope I helped. [SLE] - IPMasq help needed

I finally achieved samba printing, (winbox print to Linux Samba) and now trying to play with IP Masq. I am using my SuSE 6.2 box as router, with IP 192.168.0.5, in the config setting, activated IP-Masq, DHCP and some other, can someone help me on this? which to set ON and which do not set to ON? after playing with it, Netscape can't connect to the net so to email :( I uses a win98 with stat-IP 192.168.0.1 and a notebook with stat-IP 192.168.0.8 trying to connect to the Linux Box, both can see the share printer, able to ping both way (or three way to be exact). I tried both stat IP and DHCP client on the notebook and both the win98 box and the notebook are with gateway pointed to the Linux box (192.168.0.5) in there network setting. The Linux box can ping to the outside world, so where is wrong? connection to internet is through wvdial on 56k modem connection. I read the mini-howto on IP Masq, it say there is a script in /etc/rc.d/ but I can't find it? am I missing this or it's hiding somewhere else? the two scripts, one for the entire TCP/IP range? and one for specific IP addr suggested in the howto confused me. Can someone kindly help me on this, it seems that it's very fun to play with all this but guidance is appreciated. Thank you and regards. Please is there any way to fdisk suse 6.3 without going throught the yast. I tried to partition 10gb drive with /boot, /swap, /, /usr_local, and /home_local. my problem is i could not partition /home_local and usr_local because the f6 new partition grey out on me. SuSE Users: During the installation of SuSE Linux 6.1 I get a message: FORMAT ERROR An error ocurred while formatting the filesystem on partition "/dev/hda2". Here is the error message of the ŽformatŽcommand: mke2fs 1.14, 9-Jan-1999 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09 <Continue> I boot from floppy, select English as language, Español as keyborard map, and the free part of disk. This time I decide install DOS before Linux using 2 GB for DOS partition. I have a 450 MHz Pentium III with 128 MB RAM and 12 GB IDE Hard disk. HD Maxtor CYLS 16383 Heads 16 Sectors 63 Model 91303D6 Mother Board: SOYO SY-6VBA133 Video S3 VIRGE/DX ON BOARD QSE4BB Network adapter: 3Com Parallel Tasking II This is the 6th time I try to install, previously I get a hanging state while creating filesystem on /dev/hda2. Can someone help me.
