This is one big reason I'm trying to get away from non-free software.
Anyone have recommendations for a good alternative to majordomo, hopefully one
that's on my SuSE CDs?

I got sound running on my machine at home last night.
I don't have much (translate: any) experience with fvwm2 (running Window
Maker) but I wanted sound to play MP3s and RM files.
As such I haven't configured sound for Window Maker because it's damn
annoying.
I think it all comes down to personal preference. If you have a use for
sound then go for it. Otherwise having something running that's taking up
system resource can be all bad. My home machine is a workstation, not a
server and I want it to do most things that Windoze can do, except do it
in a very stable fashion =)
Cheers

I upgraded my system and along with the new board, processor, memory,
and all that I bought a 30 gig hard drive. I could not get fdisk to see
more than 7.9 gigs of it, even though I did all the standard things like
flash the bios, use the installation diskette from the manufacturer,
etc.
The only way I was able to partition the drive was to use the Windows 95
fdisk, with all its limitations including the one from marketing which
limits to one primary partition per drive. Eventually I partitioned a
15 gig primary and a 15 gig extended, then changed the type, formatted
and gave mount points in YaST. Now there is a 15 gig primary, a Windows
extended, with a Linux logical as the only partition there.
Cripes. Is there a better way?

From time to time i can't mount floppies (as a regular user) because
something (yast?? suseconfig??) is removing the suid bit from mount. Who is
doing it and how can i stop him doing it? (i have security setting on secure
and i would prefer to leave it that way)
How can i allow remote users login to the server through X (xdm) but
without starting xfree on the machine. I mean i want users to login through
X remotely but not locally.
TIA.

Hello Linux folks!
I got a couple of question regarding new Reiser journaling file system.
Is somebody of you actually using it?
Is there any advantages Reiser FS over EXT2 in terms of speed, ability to recover after crash?
Can I install reiser fs with my plain kernel 2.2.14?
Thanks in advance,
Alex

I've spent the last few weeks getting my SuSE box up
and running, with a fair amount of success.
However, there is one annoying detail which I
would very much like to have fixed, if only I knew how.
The issue I'm talking about is that I've been unable to
get my system to behave well at a resolution of 1024x768
or higher; the most I've gotten is 800x600 at 16 bit color
depth. 1024x768 gives a nasty 'snow' phenomenon which
makes my desktop unworkable. What's strange is that
under M$ Windows I can get 1024x768 at 8 or 16 bit
color depth as well as 1280x1024 at 8 bit color depth
(the latter though only at 60 Hz).
Some of my system's details:
SiS5597 video card
xfree86 version 3.3.4
SVGA X server
SuSE 6.2
kernel 2.2.10
Does anyone on this list have any experience with
SiS cards? What is the highest resolution which I
should expect to get with this system? How can
I fix this problem?
Thanks,
Alfred

I have been having very annoying problems trying to play audio CDs. I
am using SuSE 6.2 and have compiled OSS and SB16 drivers into my kernel
(2.2.14pre15)
I can play mp3's fine but not CDs
I have tried using a mixer to mute and then un-mute the CD player - to
no effect
I have used different CD playing software, cdp and workman. Neither
worked. The CD is read and actually played by both aps but no sound
comes out of the speakers. I used to be able to play CDs back in the
days of Win32 (ugh) - so I knwo that it is possible.
Can anyone suggest anything?

After spending a couple of days figuring out AlSA with only little luck, I
have a few questions that I would like answered. I would like to do this
without being dependent on the SuSE distribution, so I have started from
scratch at AlSA's homepage hoping to do it from tarball. I first did try to
use AlSA that came with SuSE (6.2), and got the same unresolved symbol errors
described below without running alsaconf (probably something I should have
tried).
First, I get a ton of unresolved symbol errors when loading the sound module
for my SB64AWE ISA (PNP) card:

I also have seen reference to a "soundcore" module in the various README,
HOWTO, and FAQ documents associated with AlSA, but cannot find that module on
my computer. How important is it?
I compiled in PNP support into the AlSA drivers, so I should not need to
fiddle with the PNP system utility?
When I start up a session with GQMpeg, I get the following entry in my syslog:
###
Jan 16 03:50:58 cusa insmod: /lib/modules/2.2.13/misc/snd-card-sb16.o: insmod sound-slot-0 failed
###
Finally, these are the relevant entries in '/etc/conf.modules':
###

alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-sb16
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
options soundcore io=0x220 irq=7 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
###
This is what I get from lsmod:
###

I just plugged some headphones into the cdrom and I can certainly hear
the funky tunes pouring out of the cd player but nothing gets to the
speakers...
the little grey cable that connects the audio out to the soudn card is
well and truly ther and it works fine under Win32 as I said...
hope this helps to solve the prob..
