[SLE] Upgrading from 6.0 to 6.2 or not ?

Hi, I received the SuSE OnLine newsletter in the mail today, which mainly talks about the new 6.2 release. I have a couple of questions: 1. The SuSE Linux 6.2 Upgrade (38 Euro's): can I use it when upgrading from 6.0 to 6.2 ? 2. If I decide for an upgrade, is there any danger of losing stuff that I've installed so far ? I've downloaded lot's of stuff and compiled it, mainly in /usr/local/bin but other packages are scattered throughout my system. Thank you. [SLE] nfs limitations

Based on my slightly large passwd file, I am triing to get creative to speed up my failing nfs i/o. [SLE] netscape plugins

Hi list, a colleague of mine has developed a web-based general chemistry course and I am supposed to look it through. Unfortunately, there are some applications that Netscape 4.61 doesn't support by itself and needs plugins for. One such application is called x-director and I have no idea what the appropriate plugin is. I tried to search for it on Netscape plug-in finder with no luck. All I am getting from that site is: Netscape doesn't have a plug-in released for your operating system. Perhaps someone on the list having more experience could comment on a) what the plug-in is that would be needed, and b) whether it is available for Linux. While searching for the plug-in I ran across another interesting problem. Apparently, SGI has made a plug-in available named cosmoplayer which allows for VRML files to be displayed. Apparently, there are only versions for IRIX and Windows available. Is there something similar available for the Linux world? [SLE] Athlon support chips & Linux

Hi; I'm thinking of getting an Athlon based PC to run SuSE; the AMD site covers off Linux in general as A-OK for Athlon. BUT.... the supporting AMD-750 chipset looks like it may need an EIDE driver (available for download for Windoze/NT) - anyone tried to run Linux on a mbo with the AMD-756 Southbrige chipset??? I've mailed AMD but no response yet. P 200 -------------> 627 € Cyrix 6x86 -------> less than 200 € Many many Euros less. So if you're going to buy anything, don't matter if it gets hot, you will be able to use it as barbecue and enjoy it with all your family. Any actual processor runs so hot, more even if you overclock it (too usual in this days). And just a counterpoint to my dear John P. (hey!, don't get wrong!) Cyrix's biggest market is not on Home-Processors but also in microcontrolers and other kinds of silicon devices. So perhaps you should pay attention on what's on that market. Is such if Coca-Cola made Burgers... [SLE] compiling

Thanks for the help on starting comiling. I mist 2 packages from the cd's. Now I made a new kernel, without any problems. Well, one small problem. The system uses still the old kernel. This is what I did: build kernel(make Zimage) build modules (make modules) install modules (make modules install) setup lilo (zlilo) cheque dependencies (make dep) remove objects files before compiling(make clean) (this is done by Yast for me) As I've read the instructions well, I've to remove the old kernel, place the newe kernel in /boot/ and instruct lilo with the name of the new kernel. Also it's wise to make a copy of the old lilio and store the old kernel. [SLE] Still need ppp help

My problem as I said before is that with my new kernel I can only log on once. After that pppd will not start. If I reboot all is well again for one logon. If I use my original kernel it works every time. I looked through my logs and found this error: Aug 30 23:24:26 cain modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-15 Aug 30 23:24:26 cain modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-15 Aug 30 23:26:01 cain last message repeated 2 times Aug 30 23:37:10 cain modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp-compress-24 Aug 30 23:37:11 cain modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp-compress-24 Is this what is causing my problems? If so what does that cryptic mumbo jumbo mean? Why the problem with only the new kernel? Did I leave out another component I should have added as a module? (Just a guess from the error) If I did how can I tell which one?
