[SLE] Continuing problems with SuSE 6.0

I have only two continuing problems using 2.0.36 1. I cannot contrive to get DNS service on my client machine. My server works fine, but however I try to configure the client (with or without YAST), it refuses to resolve URLS. 2. I cannot get LICQ to work. Maybe I'm just thick. Any help with these two continuing problems would be cheerfully appreciated. Additional: I may soon install SuSE 6.2 to a new 9 G hard drive, and copy my configurations and /usr apps from my 6.0 install. What can I look forward to breaking? Thanks. I know this is a little late (I've been away all weekend) but in case you haven't heard anything.... I seem to remember hearing that the only guaranteed way to compile a kernel is to use gcc. Nevertheless, I am still faced with the same problem. I am using SuSE 6.1 with the 2.5 kernel on a PII 450 w/ 128 ram and two 10 gig HD. With the exception of the 2.2.5 kernel that was included in the SuSE distribution, every kernel I have compiled (2.7, 2.10, 2.11, and my own compilation of 2.5) results in a system that is at least twice as slow as the original. I notice the difference first when the boot process reaches the ld.so.cache, following which, the xsession and all programs (both x and console) slow down drastically. I have done so much reconfiguration of the different kernels, that I believe I could now do it in my sleep. And each time--though the kernels are quite small (I have no need for much of the networking devices) and work flawlessly otherwise--they all run very slowly. The only difference I have found between the SuSE compiled kernel and my own compiled kernels is that the original was compiled using gcc version 2.7.2.3, while mine are compiled using gcc version egcs-2.91.66. Is it possible that this could make a difference? Any additional suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -- Michael L. Hello Well, quite honestly I haven't heard Prokofiev on stereo radio sound as good as this before. Hopefully I can listen to some Mozart or Beethoven later on ? If I could only find a socket on the motherboard so that I could plug my CD-ROM in. The only complaint that I have about SuSE 6.2 isn't anything to do with SuSE 6.2 software. It's to do with Star Office 5.1. In Red Hat 6.0 you can just quickly point and click to include some more fonts. I have created another folder on my machine which is tt_fonts and then I've copied the fonts into that directory. But I can't get any software that will allow me to use my favourite MS Windows fonts with Linux. Hopefully someone will help me out when Star Office 5.2 comes along ? [SLE] To Cyrix or not to Cyrix? That is the question....

Hi all & Jon Pennington, who wrote, <snip> Upgrade? To a Cyrix? I don't think so, sir. ;) I've been dealing in hardware for a long time, and I've never seen a reliable Cyrix processor. Perhaps things have changed since the MII, but the last time I checked, the Cyrix chips still ran excessively hot (compared to Intel and AMD units of the same clock). Thier floating-point units are even worse than AMD's, and, well, I just wouldn't trust a company that's been bought and sold three times in the last 18 months. Those of you who run and like your Cyrix chips: I congratulate you. Thankfully for us, Linux tends to run a little cooler anyway (less unnecessary use of clock cycles, me thinks), and Cyrix processors *just*might* be okay. I personally wouldn't risk my money, out of personal experience. In the early days, before people realized that cooler is better, I watched countless Cyrix (Win95) machines GPF for no reason that could be attributed to software. We discovered that putting a fan *on* the processor (this was years ago, folks) made the GPF's dissappear. The Intels didn't do it in the first place, but we started putting fans on them, too. I've got three fans inside my case (power, cpu, front case), and will soon have six (video card, two on my UDMA hard disk). I don't have heat problems after running this configuration for ~3 months, but I don't want to, either :). I like the AMD family for two reasons; 1) They `Keep Intel honest', as you say :). 2) they perform almost as well, if not as well, as Intels in everyday use. I respect Intel as a manufacturer, but I don't like the way the pride in their work costs me at the register (did that make any sense? ;) My K6-2 is great, and my next processor will be a K6-III 500 (no Athlon just yet). I personally think that Super7 has life left in it. AMD claims that we'll see 0.18 micron process copper K6-III's in Q2 of next year... <snip> Wow, sounds like you had a whole bunch of bad experiences @ the wrong end of these cpu's. But my AMD K6-166 is getting long in the tooth & the Cyrix's are kinda cheap for the 266 or 300's. I am waiting to hear back from my motherboard manufacturer, SOYO, to see if my board can handle it.... I am an optimist. But in the mean time, anyone else got any stories about Cyrix cpu's & Linux? Hi, I'm having problems compiling a program which uses glibc 2.0 instead of glibc 2.1. I have this printer connected to lp0. If the printer is on and I logon to linux it starts printing straightaway without any command to print. The printout seems to be postscripted and starts with the following Adobe-1.0 :ator:Qt 1.44 :Ie: Unknown ...... etc Issuing kill or lprm does not stop the printing until I turn the printer off. [SLE] Zip problems in SUse 6.2

This hasn't hit the group in awhile, but I just upgraded from 6.1 to 6.2 and lost my zip drive. I finally got it working in 6.1, but don't remember exactly how. I have all the articles and info I could find on the web...reams of paper and just want to ask the group before I pull out all the archives. When I do dmesg I get: . . scsi : 0 hosts scsi : detected total. Partition check: Had: hda1 hda2 hda3 VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly. . . i.e. the zip drive does not come up. (it does work in DOS and Win98 though) also when I run insmod ppa I get the "unresolved symbols" messages...also with insmod imm and insmod lp. What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Hello Lenz , Yes Lenz they are /usr/local/apache By saying "standard" i didn't mean they are like W3C standard but if you download everything from apache it'll be that way and JServ will install without any problems. I really like SuSE distribution . But i'm just trying make life easy for other people who will ( for sure will !!) face the same problem . At the time then i was using SuSE 6.1 i spent a lot of time to make it work and finally uninstall package from SuSE and install it from apache. It's not a big deal for me to rebuild it . Now i just decide to find out is it possible at all to make it work from SuSE box. It is . But quite complicated. I mean, you guys have a great distribution that also means that it'll be use by people who new at Linux. and therefore all packages should work without any problem from the box. And if people will uninstall Apache a'la SuSE and install it form Apache - what the reason to have apache in distribution at all? [SLE] Rhide problem ?

Well I d/l'ed it last night and tried to complie it on my system the errors below is what I got.
