Hi! I'm trying to adopt a strong backup policy in my PCs. I could deal to write very little scripts to perform the backup I want. now, I'd like to execute this script as root and if possible at shutdown/reboot (or init, in second instance). I _think_ that just by adding my backup scripts to shutdown it would run as root, is that right? hope to be clear and thank you all!

KDE -- and who should own X?

Folks, (If you get this, it'll be because I've worked round, in an evil way, a very nasty problem with SuSE's ezmlm list server. I've taken it up with suse-linux-e-owner, but have heard nothing yet ... ) I've been musing a bit about X, users, Linux and KDE. The underlying situation which prompted it is the fact that, unlike a traditional UNIX user with, say, an X terminal to a server where you log on as yourself etc, Linux users are often both user and sysadmin for their own Linux box. For instance, I'm "root" for sysadmin; "ted" for work, "efh" for mail. However, I like to start X as root (for various reasons). So root owns the X display. Other users can make their own xterms as themselves very easily, so when working within a user-xterm one does not encounter the dangers of being root. This however has a few consequences. One is that anything done by clicking on the "background" (i.e. the X root window) is done as user "root". However, this is not a major issue. What is causing me a bit of thought just now is the use of the KDE desktop environment. If you want to get the best out of this, you will set up task-bar icons for various programs to which you can drag-and-drop file/directory icons from the file-manager, etc. However, in the circumstances described, the programs which are started up by the task-bar icons are run owned by root. This is _not_ convenient! One would like the program to be run owned by the user who owns the file/directory it is working on. In fact, there's a similar problem if X had been started by an ordinary user: this user would be the owner of the program, and would not be able to access anything outside their own permission-space. At least root has that freedom! So what I'm wondering, is whether (perhaps as a future development in X and/or KDE) is would be possible to -- to coin a phrase -- "chown" the mouse, so to speak. As one notional implementation of the idea, you could have a drop-down menu of available users, click on a user, and then this would "su" the mouse/X display/KDE desktop/whatever. Then when you dragged a file (to which as the new user you would have access) onto a task-bar icon, that program would run suid the new user. This would solve the problems which arise when trying to use KDE as it should be used. Now I know that people are going to spit at me for suggesting something which is about as secure as a bank which has been left unlocked at night. And I agree that it would be no good in the standard public-LAN environment. But -- and this is the special character of Linux -- a lot of Linux usage is by people who have a few boxes on a "domestic" LAN, or even only one box, where there's no problem at all with security in the sense of taking precautions against people you don't know or trust. Such people are not around, and taking precautions against them makes no sense. The only thing you need to watch is carelessness. And when you're running stuff as "root" which you'd rather not run as "root", carelessness is definitely something to watch. In short, a lot of Linux users are having their scope curtailed by irrelevant security issues. This question would never have arisen in the "tradtional" UNIX environment, where security is a necessary headache; and it remains the same headache where Linux is used in the same environments as a UNIX substitute. But for Linux users in a safe environment, I think we need the capability to greatly relax the security restrictions. In the console (terminal) environment, it's easy to log in on different VCs as different users. These can then start their own Xterms in root's X display, and for work in an Xterm there's then no problem. This is what I've been doing for years (about 7 to be precise). However, as described above, you hit a clash when your interaction with the system is not by command-lines typed into an Xterm but by mouse actions on an X display or Desktop Environment like KDE, especially when it's drag-n-drop. So, there it is. A few thoughts. Comments? Suggestions? Cyrix M2-300 a "good" CPU for a SuSE Linux Box?

Hi! Awhile back I had my contract terminated when my boss' new boss did a reorganization of the QA-hardware department and came to the remarkable conclusion that he needed only people who had management potential and not grunts. (As the only grunt in the department, I did all the work that nobody else wanted to do with a remarkable level of excellance and without compliant... BUT I'm no butt kisser.) Now, my boss felt really bad about letting me go since he been promising for a better part of the year to hire me permament but haven't been able to, and his boss rejected his request to give me three-weeks of additional pay. A couple of days later I got a package in the mail from my old boss with a Cyrix M2-300 and an Asus SP97-V motherboard (a freebie that my boss gets from his Cyrix contacts) as compensation for my abrupt termination. I'm wondering if this CPU/motherboard combination would make for a good general-purpose workstation since it is a freebie? I will be installing SuSE 6.2 when it comes out in a couple of weeks. I could get a new box built using either a K6-2/3 or Celeron CPU, but I would have to wait several months before I can have that system up and running. Or, should I simply hand this combo off to my retired parents as an Windows Internet box? Thanks! Christopher Reimer

Some time ago, there was a discussion about the merits and wrongs of setting Majordomo to use the mail list as a return address. I have been running several lists recently and on 2 of them I have one member whose mail is usually in my queue for 24 hours. All my ml have the list email address as the return. I use Listar (http://www.listar.org) as the domo and this prevents Bounces and "vacation" messages ending up on the list, and it also has a built in spam filter as well. Maybe those setting up ML's for the first time should look at it. I'm primary using it for the general run-of-the-mill office and internet applications, which guarantees that I can have access to this stuff when my roommates have overtaken my Windows machine to play multiplayer games over the network. (Needless to say, I get a lot of dirty looks if I break into a network game to check my email, even on my OWN machine!) I already have a Linux server box using SuSE 5.3, but that system is in the closet and is used only as a file server/network router. I wanted to explore the wonderful world of Linux as a general purpose computer rather than a computer dedicated to a specific technicial solution. Since the motherboard is a all-in-one type and I have the Cyrix CPU, it wouldn't take much to put a system together. Apparently, the Cyrix M2-300 should do the job just as well as any other CPU.
