[SuSE Linux] KDE 1.1.1 failed dependencies / FTP directory management

1) Summary: There are some crucial libraries missing from the KDE 1.1.1 rpms on ftp.suse.com. Today another batch of KDE 1.1.1 stuff appeared on the ftp server I figured it was a good time to move from KDE 1.1 -> KDE 1.1.1. Unfortunately attempting this as an upgrade didn't work very well. It was necessary for me to uninstall a few of the original (from the CD) KDE 1.1 packages, namely klibs and corba, in order for the new ones to install. This meant failed dependencies subsequently so I "--force'd" the lot then ran the rpms again to check for any remaining failed dependencies. Right enough, there were. They are as follows (sorted via library name) libmico2.2.6.so is needed by arts-0.3.0-8 libkdeutil.so.2 is needed by corba-1.1pre2-25 libkdeutil.so.2 is needed by koffice-990203-22 libkhtml.so.2 is needed by corba-1.1pre2-25 libkhtml.so.2 is needed by koffice-990203-22 libkio.so.2 is needed by corba-1.1pre2-25 libkio.so.2 is needed by koffice-990203-22 libmikmod.so.1 is needed by kmikmod-2.02-5 libmikmod.so.1 is needed by kmodbox-0.4.0-5 libpisock.so.3 is needed by kpilot-3.1b9-0 These files are nowhere to be found among the KDE rpms on the ftp site. SuSE, this needs fixing. Everyone else - can anyone tell me what packages these files used to belong to? I suppose I need to install some old rpms with "--force" then try the KDE 1.1.1 packages on top as an upgrade (again). Mind you, I'm not too sure that these missing libraries were ever there in the first place. I'm not too sure that this is going to work. It looks like SuSE are a few versions away from getting this right. I'm pretty hacked off about that - it took _hours_ to download that lot and I have a sneaking suspicion SuSE's only available fix will be many new large rpms. 2) Summary: FTP 'suse update' directories could be better arranged. SuSE, do you _really_have_to_ put short and long file rpm filenames and multiple version numbers of rpms in the same directory? When there are a lot of files to select it makes it _very_ time consuming to select just one version of each file that has changed since the last time. I ended up doing it manually and going over it several times just to be sure I wasn't missing anything or selecting multiple versions. Imagine my frustration when the ftp connection kept dying at your end and I had to keep re-doing the selection (neither kfm nor xftp supports REGET it seems). There is probably a way around it but not everybody is going to find it in time (I didn't). Please refrain from ever putting the full rpm name and the short name link in the same directory. And please do not put multiple versions in the same directory either. Then we can just disable overwriting and do a wildcard get into the same directory each time. Yes. sd_mod is the module for SCSI disk or non ide zip drive support. Everytime YaST starts up, it causes this message. If you don't have scsi, turn it off. Henning -- H. [SuSE Linux] Castlewood's ORB drive

I was thinking about buying a ZIP disk until I saw Castlewood's ORB drive (<A HREF="http://www.castlewood.com/"><A HREF="http://www.castlewood.com/</A">http://www.castlewood.com/</A</A>>). Looking at their Web site I could not find any information whether it runs with Linux. Nevertheless, it runs with OS/2 and Win 3.1. Does anyone know if ORB runs with Linux? Thanks. [SuSE Linux] Hard lockups

I'm using SuSE Linux 6.1 on a Pentium 90 with 32 MB EDO Ram, 2MB S3 Trio 64 V2 (no-name brand), 3Com 3c509B TPO NIC, SB Vibra16 PnP (mostly not used, but have the OSS drivers which I only run on- demand), primary master IDE is a 3.1 GB WD Caviar with Linux, primary slave is a 24X CD-Rom, secondary master is a 2 GB Fujitsu with FreeBSD (dormant and unmounted for the time I'm becoming comfortable with Linux). Kernel is 2.2.5 I think (standard SuSE 6.1 kernel). My problem: when running X (and only when running X apparently) the computer just hard-locks completely. Can't even ping to it. At first I thought it was just X locking up and trapping all signals from the mouse and keyboard, but since I can't ping to it, it means the whole OS is locked up. I'm running KDE 1.1 which is also standard with SuSE 6.1, and the X server is the S3-specific server. Haven't tried using the SVGA server to see if there's a difference though. If anyone has seen (and hopefully solved) this or similar problems, or if you know how I can track down what's happening, I'd greatly appreciate it. END About dhcpd: To those of you using 6.1 (i.e. kernel 2.2.[5|7] ;-)) and dhcpd, how're your experiences? I've seen lots of error messages and even kernel oops with dhcpd+2.2. That's why I've looked into the sources and made a change: in file /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/dhcp-2.0b1pl18/includes/cf/linux.h I added "#undef USE_LPF" inline 130, disabling use of the pakcet filter. [SuSE Linux] WVdial+Ipmasqurading+DOD+SuSE 6.1

Anyone care to write a simple (mini) how-to ? I know there are other how-to similar, but none (that I am aware of) cover the new kernel,wvdial and DOD. Most ideal would be to have it all start up after booting up, without having to log on to start things up. This way one system could be turned on and it would handle all the dial on demand and ipmasqurading automatically without any further intervention. Shutting down would be accomplished by telnet ( no need for monitor or anything else for the system handling the network connection ) I am sure there is someone on this list that has already got dial on demand, and ipmasqurading working , using the latest SuSE with WVdial. How about posting or make available a how-to for the rest of us, not so proficient at setting things up .
