Ah! This is a load off my mind - I thought I might have to do some serious word-eating at some point. Red Hat's default ~/.bashrc is sparser and fully in line with bash design. I'll bet you don't still have the original Red Hat /etc/bashrc because /etc was overwritten by SuSE. But it may have had useful stuff. A system wide /etc/bashrc is where all the aliases and similar "not specifically login related" stuff can go. If you do any customizations, you can perfect them in your ~/.bashrc and then decide what ones to move to /etc/bashrc (for all user's bash shells) and /etc/skel (for all new user's initial ~/.bashrc). I'm going to check out the Red Hat ftp site at some point to have a gander at all their config files - just adopting them wholesale, to start, may be worth looking into. [SuSE Linux] Wierd Sound

Hello All, Here is a questions i hope someone can answer. I have sound compiled into my kernel and it works fine with cd's which it is basically there for i don't mind not being able to play wavs etc..... Except when i start up Enlightenment the "welcome" wav doesn't stop playing! over and over again it plays! It is the same with ICQ if u have ICQ and have heard "EhOh" then u know where i am getting at! it plays ehoh over and over again until i reboot the computer it is really annoying to say the least! Hi, I'd like to add a few things to this megathread/flamewar, just to illustrate our side of this issue. Please note, that I am not an official speaker for SuSE, but I think, my fellow collegues will go along with what I say. It is true, the we have revised editions of some releases. If we run out of stock of a release, we have two options: keep the master or create a new one. After the first revision, we usually take this chance to implement bug and security fixes which have been found in the previous edition and create a second master. However, there is usually only one or maximum two different revisions, it is not true, that we update everything for each new press run. You must also distinguish between the german and the international release! Also take note, that even if a package appears to be "newer", this mostly stems from the fact, that it has a higher build number, but still the same version number. If we create a new master CD, every package will be rebuilt in this process, even if it had not been touched since the first release. You can determine, which edition you have by using YaST (Choose/Install packages -> Change/create configuration) You will see something like this: Base system: SuSE-Linux-i386 6.1.1-1 Source media: SuSE-Linux-full-i386 6.1.1-2 In this example, the installed system is SuSE Linux 6.1 first edition, while the CD contains the second edition. Alternatively you can look at the file /suse/setup/descr/info on the first CD: ELF MIN_YAST_VERSION 0.98 DIST_STRING SuSE DIST_IDENT SuSE-Linux-i386-6.1.1#1 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ MIN_DIST_VERSION 6.1 HAS_LIVE_CD=1 It is indeed unfortunate, that you cannot determine this from the outside of the package, but I hope you agree, that we cannot create new boxes for each revision. A sticker or label on the outside sounds like a good alternative, I will forward this for further discussion. In addition to that, I am sure that it won't be a big deal to create a list of packages that have been changed between revisions, we will also think about this. If a package has been updated and we feel that this is a major / necessary update, we also put it on our ftp Server and make an entry on our Updates/Bugfixes HTML page. Please note, that even if SuSE employees like me are reading this list, we are only doing this on a voluntary basis as our time permits. We are not the "official" voices of SuSE and some of us sometimes express opinions which may sound rude or not conformant to the official SuSE politics. We also do not have the power, to make all the requested changes. This belongs to the developers or our marketing after the necessary discussion and evaluation of options. (Even though I sometimes wish I had the power :) ). However, we take issues like this serious and we forward summaries or important messages about some issues for further internal discussions. I also would like to encourage you to send your comments and feedback to feedback(a)suse.de instead of only "bitching" on the list (Like the shell startup script thread). I work in the support area myself (not Linux), and although I agree with almost everything you mentioned here, I must sympathize with the SuSE support team in that (from what you have pasted below), you didn't provide enough information for them to help you. Perhaps some errors were encountered? Feel glad that you got a response at all, as most support teams ignore any calls that don't have enough information and simply send out the generic response. If you did provide them with more information than they say, then I apologize, and ask that you post that information here and perhaps we could help. The problems that can occur in Linux are so vast and strange, that knowing everything is impossible. Diald has had some strange problems in the past, but I have seen a few infomative emails on this list serve. I am no guru, hardly know what I'm doing most of the time, but I realize the fact that any one source of information isn't going to be enough. Just my 2 cents. [SuSE Linux] Wvdial && DNS???!?!?!?

Hi, how can I configure the name server under wvdial? Is it sufficient to specify the DNS in /etc/ppp/options? It doesnt, however, work this way... any idea? Pppd is started correctly, but I'm not able to access any site... Mano :) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The road goes ever on and on down from the street where it began now far ahead the road is gone and I must follow if I can pursuing it with eager feet until it meets some larger ways where many wanderers and errands meet and wither then? Everyone knows that compiling your own kernel is a necessary part of a Linux installation. Otherwise, you can't include all the necessary support for your own hardware and networking needs. For example, what if you left out ppp support from the stock precompiled kernel and modules? In any event I upgraded to 2.2.9 not on a whim because I was already having these problems with _your_ supplied diald-016 on _your_ supplied 2.2.5 kernel. The questions I asked concern the proper functioning pppd and diald, a vital part of Linux functionality for many site, and problems with these utilities have dogged several SuSE users. For SuSE to completely duck the question is an abrogation of responsibility. I am therefore less than impressed with your mealy-mouthed response. I don't bother SuSE's support department with questions for which the answer is visibly available elsewhere. But in return I expect from you rather more commitment to your product than you are presently showing. I just recently bought a K6-3 350 for a whopping $130. I swore to myself that I would wait for the K7 to come out, but at that price, how could I wait? Considering I already had a cheapy motherboard that would hold a K6-2. And, using Linux as I do, had a wonderful chance to simply crank up the multiplier and make my 350 a 400. Linux uses the HLT funtions to shutdown parts of the CPU not being used so the heat it non existant, even with the factory installed heat sink and fan. I'm keeping a close eye on it though. I just got a cushy new computer job so I've been spending money left and right against my "better" judgement. Running 3 systems now, a K6-2 350 Linux box, a P100 Linux box and a P133 Winblows box. This was going to make a nice in home network until I found out I couldn't get cable in my new apartment. What use is a network when you have a 4K/s internet feed? Oh well. I'll shutup now.
