[SuSE Linux] another happy customer

I took the plunge a few days back and installed 6.0 (just in time for 6.1) and wanted to mention how pleased I am with it. I've stayed with 5.0 since late '97 because it ran so well and I didn't want to mess with a dependable system. Not to say that 5.2 and 5.3 weren't fine; I have 5.3 on my machine at work even now. I elected to format the disks and start fresh. It took about 3 hours from putting the boot disk in the drive to having ppp running and X up with a nice, eye-candy WindowMaker theme. The only element that has caused me any headache at all was leafnode, and, rather than mess with it I re-installed from the newest source, which got me my newsfeed again. So, thanks to everyone at S.u.S.E. for a high-quality, easy to use distribution. Now, if I could only find an ISP that wouldn't hang-up on me, I'd be on easy street. This is probaby a dumb idea, and probably has absolutely no re- levance to your situation, but is your boot partition actually bootable? Assuming that /dev/hda2 is your boot partition, fdisk should say /dev/hda1 Linux swap /dev/hda2* Linux native # see the star? /dev/hdb1 Linux native If this is not the case, you need to do this: $ fdisk /dev/hda b # to toggle the bootable flag 2 # denoting primary partition number 2, or /dev/hda2 w # to write the new information to the partition table q # to quit fdisk $ shutdown -r now I've been working on PC's for five years, and using Linux for two of those years. I forgot this simple step only a few days ago, and as a result wasted another hour reinstalling the system, only to be greeted by the "No operating system found" message again. If this is what you've forgotten, you're not alone. If this is not the problem, please don't be offended by by overly simplistic troubleshooting. [SuSE Linux] SuSE 6.0 + Apache + PHP + Informix Anyone ?

I've been trying to get the above combination working but I run into a slew of issues. While it was very interesting going down this path I haven't been able to get it working with the stock Apache (SuSE6.0) rpm. Has anyone been able to get this working without rebuilding Apache from sources. I've been able to get DBI and DBD::Informix working but I prefer PHP for obvious reasons. Has anyone tried to use DSO's with apxs ? apxs dies due weird makefile errors. I'm using latest 'stable' versions of all the packages. Any input appreciated. Use whatever you like. Gnome RPMs have been included in SuSE since at least 5.3, althogh I believe they were in 5.2 as well. You are free to install them, though none of them are in the Gnome 1.0.x series. 6.1 will have packages from the 1.0.x series. Intstall the package 'wvdial' from series 'n', by using YaST. Start X. Run wvdial.tcl. Type in your parameters. Dial. That's it. It's possible you may have some trouble along the way but I can't account for everthing in one mail. Post any problems you have.
