[SLE] kernel config using menuconfig

As I got a lot of replies requesting more info on my kernel compilation efforts. Here it is, and it is quite long. Hardware: NEC Ready 9704 System Everything is standard in this machine. No SCSI, all EIDE, standard floppy, ATAPI CD-ROM. 1 linksys lnetx100 (using dec tulip driver) 1 3com 3c905 1 cable modem connection to the Internet (no dial up here) Pentium 200 No sound PCI video 50 MB RAM Software: SuSE 6.2 ( 3rd party firewalling program (not ipchains) Yes, this is going to be (hopefully) a firewall some day. That's it, that's all that is going to be running on this box. Static IP address (yes, I am one of the lucky ones) Ext2 only, no other operating systems here Following is what I have in my menuconfig so far. The firewall program will take care of all the firewalling issues. Anything that is NOT listed, is not in my config. If it is to be loaded as a module, there will be a note on that item. [SLE] Partioning the file system.

I recently acquired a second hard disk, and am in the process of adding it to my system. I am the only user of the system, and will probably add any new software into /usr/local. My original SuSE system is all mounted under /, in /dev/sda4. I decided that I would like to mount /usr on the new disk, under /dev/sdb4. I successfully partitioned and formatted the disk, and mounted a directory /temp on /dev/sdb4. Following the tip in the tips howto, I succeeded in copying the file system from /usr to /temp. My strategy was to be as follows: Updated the inittab to runlevel 2 - I did not want any problems with X, and I see that it is under /usr. Updated the fstab to mount /usr on /dev/sdb4 renamed /usr to /oldusr (I planed to delete /oldusr after everything checked out). shutdown -r now. On the shutdown, I get a few errors. I would expect this, as /usr has vanished from the face of the earth. On restart, I find that the mount for /usr fails, and I am left with a sick system. I checked the fstab, and it looks o.k. I renamed /oldusr to /usr to recover the system, and restarted. This time, I find that the mount of /usr to /dev/sdb4 is successful, and the system starts with /usr on the new disk. I've tried this a few times now, and the situation is consistent. If I rename /usr, I cannot mount a new usr. If I do not rename /usr, I can mount the new usr, but I cannot access the old /usr to reclaim the space. In both scenarios the space used on my old disk remains at 69%. I've checked the man pages, and the sdb, and the howtos, and cannot see anything obvious that I am doing wrong. I'm sure that I've seen some similar things in this mailing list previously, but I could not seem to find a searchable archive on the SuSE site. If anybody has had this situation or something similar before, I would appreciate to hear how they overcome this, and if not, has anyone any ideas of the approach I should take to try and nail this down?? [SLE] SuSE 6.2 bootdisk won't boot

Hi! I was trying to update an i486/40 with 16mb of ram, and the eide01 bootimage didn't work, but the one included with SuSE 6.0 did. I did the upgrade just fine on my i586 machine, but this one just has a mind of itself - is there a way to go around this. When booting from a floppy I get that color screen and then when it starts the boot - uncompresses the initdisk and comes to three dots it says that it cannot boot and to remove the disk and press enter. [SLE] Compiling Kernels

I want to compile the latest kernel source using menuconfig. I read the kernel how-to and miscellaneous other documentation on the subject but still haven't found anything that explains the options in menuconfig. I don't want to include anything I don't absolutely need. I want to compile the smallest possible kernel need. I used the help function but it doesn't seem to give all the info I need. Is there a recommended book for dealing with these kind of kernel issues? [SLE] Acrobat Read 4.0

I have just installed Acrobat reader 4.0. It works ok but the fonts come up fuzzy and unclear. I am trying to create a symbolic link to the new directory. I am currently in the /usr/src directory logged on as root and when I type: ln -s linux linux-2.2.13 I end up getting the symbolic link of linux but it appears to be pointing to linux, and not linux-2.2.13. Whats more, it drops this link into the linux-2.2.13 directory and not into /usr/src, which is where I am currently located. I checked all the permissions and such on the folders I am dealing with (because I didn't know where else to start), and permissions on the linux-2.2.13 look just like the permissions on linux-2.2.10 (which was the kernel installed off the 6.2 cd-rom). What am I doing wrong here? Thanks for any help! [SLE] make menuconfig

One more question and I will leave you all alone for a while ;). In my reading about linux and compiling kernels I saw somewhere that it is best to use modules for anything that is NOT required to boot the system. So I would support stuff like my network card via a module? But things like ext2 support MUST be compiled directly into the kernel. Thanks. Don't have Gnome installed anymore, but I seem to remember typing 'panel &' in an xterm and finding gnome running at the sme time as kde. Of course kwm is not a 'gnome-compliant' window manager, but you should be able to run the applets ok. I didn't stay too long with this setup as the panels and icons tend to collide with each other.
