[SLE] powerd and single user mode

Greetings, I have been using Tom Websters genpowerd with great success using an older APC 520ES. Worked like a charm, but every time I upgraded, I had to re-hack the halt script and inittab (amoung others). Now that I've upgraded my UPS to and APC Smart-UPS 1250 I'd like to try out powerd since it offers network communications allowing one machine on a UPS to act as a master and shutdown other machines on the same UPS. Several observations. 1. There is no mention of powerd in the SuSE manual(it is part of the sysV stuff I guess) and no mention of the "SuSE" way of doing things on their site. It appears that when a power failure occurs (ie: /sbin/init.d/powerfail start nothing more that a message is done. if /sbin/init.d/powerfail now is invoked the machine goes to single user mode. This is nice, but this brings up: 2. SuSE when switched to "init s" shuts down the appropriate services and goes to single user mode, but on my machine when invoking mount is reports all drives are still mounted and are mounted rw. In addition when booting to single user mode ie.: Linux single SuSE boots to single user mode and does not mount the drives listed in fstab, but roout (again according to mount) is mounted rw. Is this correct? Or is mount simply reporting the drive status incorrectly. It appears to me that the drives in single user mode are indeed rw. Conclusions: What is the SuSE out of the box method of using powerd? Is this documented anywhere? How is powerd used at SuSE? What was Florian's intentions when he added this package into SuSE? I'd prefer that powerd, when invoked via the serial cable from the UPS, initiates a timed shutdown with the appropriate warnings to the users, and starts shutdowns on the remote machines for which it is responsible. It then shuts the machine down, turning the UPS off after unmounting the drives. (As per genpowerd) Once power is restored the UPS would come back up and the Linux box would re-boot. If there is not a preferred method by the SuSE engineers, I would like to work with them to come up a preferred method (The SuSE way if you will) of implementing powerd. Who would I need to contact on this? Has anyone else come up with smoother method of integrating their UPS's than powerd with SuSE? best, __ Wm. J. Sandman III Need Win95 or BETTER? [SLE] xterm font

Hi, I get a rather squished and small font in new xterms lately. I have not touched any config but it is unreadable. It seems to be bold too. Not sure because it is so small. =) How do I get a larger font in xterm? [SLE] quantum fireball scsi and lilo

hello, my scsi host adapter aha1542 functions fine when booting of an old, noisy 237 meg seagate, which i only use because of the 8meg boot partition on it. My root fs is on sdb1, a 1042 meg quantum fireball disk which does this job fine. But i cant seem to get lilo properly installed onto it, and fdisk tells me something about wrong sector numbers. I figured this might be the root of the problem, so i tried to give some extra options to lilo. which i have included below. I also thought, i could perhaps give the kernel a lilo append parameter, that somehow would tell the kernel about the stinking hd numbers, but i would need help on that one. As you can see from my lilo.conf below, sdb1 is supposed to become sda1. I know, that i have to rejumper the hdd. thanks in advance, i would greatly accept help, since this pc is in my bedroom and (will be) running 24 a day and the 1 gig disk is a lot more quiet than the small 237meg with the boot part. [SLE] memory "mirroring?" for licq

hi all. i have licq 0.70 running and it is composed of two subprograms, the daemon and the GUI plugin , they communicate via shared memory. In my case i would like to make possible to run the daemon on one machine and the gui on another machine. [SLE] kmod, and modprobe

Hi, I just built the 2.2.13 kernel with kmod enabled. In the kmod.txt file, it says to "tell the kernel where modprobe is with": echo "/sbin/modprobe" > /proc/sys/kernel/modprobe but this dosn't seem to work. Upon booting up, I do a cat /dev/sndstat and I get a message "operation not supported by device" Then I manually do a "modprobe sound" then the sound modules get loaded. What am I missing to get kmpd to work automatically? The module loader was working fine with my 2.2.5 kernel. [SLE] Creating Symbolic Links

I am attempting to compile my first kernel here. I am trying to create a symbolic link to the new directory. I am currently in the /usr/src directory logged on as root and when I type: ln -s linux linux-2.2.13 I end up getting the symbolic link of linux but it appears to be pointing to linux, and not linux-2.2.13. Whats more, it drops this link into the linux-2.2.13 directory and not into /usr/src, which is where I am currently located. I checked all the permissions and such on the folders I am dealing with (because I didn't know where else to start), and permissions on the linux-2.2.13 look just like the permissions on linux-2.2.10 (which was the kernel installed off the 6.2 cd-rom). What am I doing wrong here? Thanks for any help! Apparently the new bios messes with Linux and it can't read the memory correctly. The previous version of the bios worked w/ out any modifications. I don't have a valid reason for why this happened..and I don't care..all the memory is being seen..and now I can get some work done..
