[SLE] Hello again

Greetings again. I got my enviroment working properly. (Thanks) Now I've discovered that my kde desktop won't show the bottom of the page. (The portion where I would be able to click "OK" :) ) Any hints on how I can correct that. I've tried sax already and it dosen't seem to work. Thanks for your assistance. You might look at the source for vlock, a program that locks virtual consoles. You can lock lock either all VCs or just the current one. [SLE] distro copying

Hi, I discussed this with some people locally but I am the only SuSE user here and I wonder what is legal to copy and what is not legal to copy from a regularly bought SuSE distribution CD set like 6.2 I don't know if there is any people like me out there but when I buy software I like to make a copy in case I lose or break my original. Sometimes I just run out of Windows coasters at parties and people don't think and suddenly they put down their glass of milk on the chameleon. Can somebody go into detail about this, please? [SLE] easy man page printing?

Hi, I've been trying to print out a man page. I get the funny extra characters where the man page has highlighted words. Is there a simple program or script to print out a manpage as plain text? [SLE] Marking Text

Using X-Windows, it does not seem possible, to click Mouse to bring Cursor to the Start of the text, then, move the Page Down to the End of the passage one wants to Mark, finally, Holding down Shift Key, to click Mouse at end of text, thus marking the selected area. Under X-Windows, instead of marking the selected area, to Cursor merely jumps to the point where one clicked Mouse while holding down Shift Key. [SLE] modem sharing?

Does Linux support a modem sharing for other LAN clients? I am not talking about Internet access for all LAN clients. I want to have a 'virtual' COM port on a LAN client (Win9x or WinNT) which redirects to the physical COM port on the Linux-PC and allows to use the modem there. I don't want to use locally attached modems on LAN clients. [SLE] Canon BJC-4300 Problems

Hey all... About the Canon BJC-4300 Problem... I have learned many things about this little sewer rat since I have been triple booting between Linux, BeOS, and Windows 98 and 2000 - If you have a Windows partition, use the Canon driver that either comes on the CD-ROM or on the Canon website to reset the printer to the default settings... Yes, I know that this sounds trivial, but the Windows driver has a feature that let's the printer come on and shut off automatically - I have found that I have loads of problems with this, especially when I boot BeOS - Linux and Windows are able to handle this correctly... (Maybe some sort of error in the implementation of ghostscript for BeOS?) Try that, and see if it works... I had a similar problem, and the above sorted it out great... Hope this helps! [SLE] Printer Off Line

I have a Canon BJC4300 which has until recently worked perfectly well under SuSE 6.2. Lately though it had been failing to print sometimes, and inspection of the printer cable revealed that it would not screw into the port properly as the top screw connection on the cable was too short. Pushing it in usually cured this. However, since buying a new case aand transferring my hardware into it and buying a cable that does screw in completely I am unable to print. Lpc tells me that it is @waiting for lp to bercome ready (offline ?). I no longer have W95 so I cannot try and print from there to test whether the physical connection is OK. The printer runs its own test print so I assume the printer itself is OK. Is there any other programme I can run to try and diagnose the fault or is it likley to be a hardware, ie motherboard problem ? Here is what happened as far as I could make it out: the syntax changed from old to new. Then a security warning went out about a race condition in mount and so on. It doesn't have much to do with the samba team, as these smbmount/umount commands are not from the samba team but are linux specific. Anyway, someone fixed it by changing back to the old syntax or something like that. The annoying bit is that the old syntax does not allow to set GID for the smb filesystem. However, I understand that being able to set these is not possible in a secure way. Sharity has the same problem and says there is no solution to it. The umask support is also very poor - can't avoid that all files have the x-flag set unless you accept that all directories also have the x-flag unset. The latter is not acceptable. [SLE] The Great Microsoft Robbery

Hello All... Why pay for a copy when Microsoft will give one to you for free? How do you ask? Attend a Micorsoft sponsored sales event, or a technology preview which are completely free and open to the general public... What I mean is this: in the USA (as well as the rest fo the world as well), Microsoft gives these quarterly shows (lectures) that describe current Microsoft sales methods and support options... When they give these shows, they give away free copies of all of their new software. When I went to one a few months ago, I signed up via email, went to the Hilton where they were having it, sat down, and voila! Two hours later I had 3 copies of Windows 2000 Beta 3 - the Professional, Server, and Advanced Server all in a shrink-wrapped package. The room where I went had them sitting out 1 per chair, and there was even a table set up with free soft drinks and snacks, as well as free copies of FrontPage 2000 (not the demo either)... Perfectly legal, and legit... Heck, I even asked the guy who gave the lecture if I could have the other two copies - the was the easiest piece of social engineering I have ever done... In fact, they even had a name tag printed up for me where it said my name, and for title I had "Linux Developer and System Administrator" At this particular even, there was even a guy there who was over 65 years of age who, well, looked like he hadn't bathed in a month - he got a free copy, and so can you... Man! Why pay $59+ for it? Just pay for gasoline for the drive, and it is all yours (which in my case, cost me $5.00)... Not a bad bargain if you ask me... I believe the website is at http://events.microsoft.com... Now I ran that beta copy on my machine and it was so slow... Very little driver support - I think that even BeOS 4.5 has better support IMHO... Just my two cents worth...
