Hi. Is it in all windowmanagers, Yupp I know. You do it in sax. Get out of all graphical modes and start sax. On the page with screenresolution you can choose "virtual resolution". Dont do that. Hi. Oh boy that original post of mine was made months ago.... Well if you have the documentation at /usr/doc/packages/postgres/ you have installed postgres allready. All you seem to need is to get the postmaster daemon running. This is done automatically in the future, but the first time you must start it by creating a dummy detabase. The problem is solved in the answer below, just log in to the postgre account with "su postgres ENTER postgres_passwd" and do as the man sais! Hi G-H: Many thanks for the message - I think I understand your explanation. I've had another try - but with no luck at all.... Either the modem is strange - or perhaps there is some small point that I am stupidly missing! I can get no response whatever from the modem using chat. If I do cat somefile > /dev/modem I at least see the lights on the modem flash, but when I use chat, no light flashes, and nothing happens until chat times-out. I've seen and tried several chat scripts - all different - some use "" others `` - some also add \n\r - and I've seen the item in the SDB about putting in a delay \d Here's the script I started with - and the result in /var/log/messages..... How can I turn off the virtual resolution in kde. I want to run in 800X600 but it runs in 640X480 and goes off the screen and I have to scroll around with the mouse to get around the screen. Well, the easiest to set up is maybe AfterStep, but as soon as E has a stable 0.15 version out, I'll probably switch. Hi, Can someone help me figure out why, on bootup, I am presented with a long list of messages that are similar to this (not nearly verbatim): module char-major-5 not found device cua0 not found This happened after I upgraded from 2.0.36 to 2.2pre3. Everything works fine, but this message continues (I think; I can't see the beginning of the messages) from cua0-8. Interesting development-- I checked the ppp0 port with tcpdump and found that the linux box was sending icmp packets to the win box saying that it can't find the DNS name server. These packets had long ttl's so that it took about 3 minutes to establish the ftp connection. These packets continued but with shorter ttl's so as to not interfere with the ftp process. I'm not sure where they come from (I even deleted my resolv config)but there must be some bug in the DNS or resolver code. An expert in network code needs to fix this one, I don't see any requests from the NT box that may be causing this! The DNS it was looking for is my ISP's? Stumpped?? Hi, More stuff about xdm and console... I run 5.3. I was just wondering if someone could replicate what I am getting: 1. login as root at tty0 2. # xdm --> to start the xdm 3. login as root at the xdm prompt 4. open an xterm 5. # w --> to view tty's used (root should be on tty0 and some ttyp0) 6. # fuser -k /dev/tty0 --> to kill all the processes that are using tty0 7. # w --> to make sure root is no longer on tty0 8. # killall xdm --> to go back to console login prompt. Now try to login at tty0... --> all control chars are displayed instead of being interpreted. The tty becomes unusable until reboot. Right now my tty0,1,2 are in this state... I had to kill root user from tty0 while running xdm because people thought it was me logged in at the console and would send talk request (disregarding the idle time of that root user) making this machine beep every N seconds. This mainly happens at night :-) So, it is just interesting if you guys could replicate this. [SuSE Linux] SuSE locking-up after 4 days repeatedly

Hello. I've been using slackware since around 3.0 and about 3 months ago started reformatting/installing the various dist's to see and form my own opinions of the various dist's. I was very impressed with SuSE 5.3 as the file structure was more similar with slack then the others I had tried. My problem is that while running SuSE, after about a day, the hard drive light would light and stay lit permanetely and after about 3 days the system would lock forcing me to do a reset. The longest uptime I was able to accrue was 4 days and 20 hours +/- some minutes. Hardware: Pentium 133 with 48MB RAM approx. 8 gigs of HD space and 94MB swap space SCSI is aha152x (SCSI Soundblaster 16) running 4GIG of the 8 MB is a hot-541 pci NE2000 ethernet connected to an ascend pipeline 25 USR33.6 modem Logitech Trackball Distributions: SuSE 5.3 devel/network packages (std tweaking for PPP/etc..) Slackware 3.6 devel/network packages (std tweaking as above) rolled my own kernels for both dist's using the same setup files, all drivers are compiled into the kernel with the exception of the NE2000 driver which HAS to be moduler. Software: AfterStep 1.5.X Netscape 4.5 Nedit 5.0.2 Filerunner 2.5 BitchX-75p1+Tcl1.5/Linux 2.0.35 on ansi-xterm those are the main programs I use What makes this even more strange is that I never experienced this problem while running slack, the other dist's I only kept loaded about 2 days before I got fed up with them so I have no other comparisons, SuSE was the only one I really liked and really want to continue using but not at the expense of stability. I even reloaded Slackware 3.6 and am currently runing on day 16 for uptime.
