[SuSE Linux] A Cautionary Tale

An interesting thing happened to my Linux system over the Christmas holidays. With all this talk about partitioning disks and installing Linux, I thought I'd share it with you. Hopefully it will prevent someone falling into the same trap. When I initially installed my Linux system, I had 3 partitions for Linux: /dev/hda2 / /dev/hda3 swap /dev/hda4 /usr Everything worked fine, until just after Christmas my system failed to boot correctly, saying that it couldn't find the kernel image. I started the rescue system, and ran fdisk -l. It told me that my disks were now: /dev/hda2 swap /dev/hda3 / /dev/hda4 /usr (i.e. hda2 and hda3 had been swapped.) Fortunately I was able to change /etc/fstab, boot the system from /dev/hda3 and re-run lilo. My system now works fine. I think the problem came about from two areas: 1: The way I partitioned the disk. 2: Use of a partitioning tool to clean up the DOS partition. When I initially partitioned my disk, I split the disk in two. I then took a small swap partition from the end of the first part of the disk. Fips wouldn't allow me to split the second half (as it wasn't a FAT partition), so I had to DOS format it before splitting it. I obviously also formatted it using yast. My disk then looked like: +-----------+-----------+-----------+-----------+ | /dev/hda1 | /dev/hda3 | /dev/hda2 | /dev/hda4 | +-----------+-----------+-----------+-----------+ At some time around Christmas, I ran a Lite version of a partitioning tool to change the block size of my DOS partition, which may have noticed that the partitions were in the "wrong" order, so it re-ordered them. I cannot confirm this as I don't want to start from scratch again, but the only thing I can think of that I did between running Linux with the disk as shown above and having to rescue my system because hda2 and hda3 had been swapped was running this partitioning tool. Just thought I'd pass this information on. It may help someone. [SuSE Linux] Latest glibc....

Folks, I recently got my paws on StarOffice 5.0 personal edition for Linux-x86, on the cover CD of PC Plus (in the UK). I also spent a while last night installing what I thought was the latest glibc (2.0.6). And yet I find that StarOffice won't even consider completing the install script unless I have 2.0.7 - the sources for which I can't find anywhere - even www.gnu.org. So - what's the story? Is there a source release of glibc 2.0.7 kicking about yet, or are StarDivision pulling everyone's leg? There is a binary version (apparently) of glibc 2.0.7 on the CD, which I could install, I suppose, but this is a bit of a mystery.... Any ideas? [SuSE Linux] BUG REPORT: XFree86-3.3.3-3 crashes on launching gimp, xanim or blender

I posted a few weeks ago that since upgrading X via the SuSE XFree86-3.3.3-3 rpm (libc5 based of course), every time I try to run gimp, xanim or blender, the whole X system crashed right back to the console. There were only a couple of replies. Since then I've switched from an ATI Xpert@play 4MB AGP to an STB Velocity 128 4MB AGP card, and thus from the XF86_Mach64 server to the XF86_SVGA server. The problem persists however, so it is not a card-specific or server-specific issue. It disables some of my system's main applications and it's almost certain that there are other applications which have the same effect. I posted a bug report to XFree86.org on 20 December but though they've acknowledged receipt I know of no further progress (presumably the Christmas holidays will slow things down anyway). Surely, more people must have noticed this problem... If you have crashed X since installing 3.3.3-3 (the symptom I am looking for is an abrupt exit from the GUI straight back to a text console, immediately on starting the application) then please mail any details either to me or to this list and I will compile a more comprehensive report for the XFree86 guys. [SuSE Linux] cd-rom opening

Something in my suse 5.3 setup is locking my cdrom closed. Mount dosen't show the cdrom mounted, but the slide won't move until I am in the shutdown sequence or in M$. Can anyone direct me to the culprit? [SuSE Linux] How to defeat the Host and default routes set at boot.

Can anyone tell me how to defeat the route setup done at boot which builds the host route and default route? I believe that it is happening in /sbin/init.d/route ,but cannot see what I've done to cause it to happen. I looked thru rc.config and set the ppp default route to false. Jan H. [SuSE Linux] Kachunk! Brrr... (Adaptec 2940UW woes)

Hello SuSErs. I've got an old Pentium 166mmx and I've been running narrow SCSI in it with an Adaptec 2940 for some time. Being ultra-cheap, I'd rather thow faster disks and RAM at this old box than upgrade it. So I purchased an Adaptec 2940UW and a 4Gb UW Seagate drive to go with it. My old 2Gb narrow Seagate become /home and shares the narrow cable with a 1Gb jaz, a zip, and a generic 32x CDROM. But, on occasions, the UW drive will sounds like it's resetting all SCSI devices. 9 times out of ten, I hear an (alarming!) 'chunk' noise (from the UW drive), a stepper motor resetting what I can only guess are the drive heads, all other drives are reset, and then things return to normal. While annoying, I could live with occasions like that but it's the times that it *can't* auto-reset things that is the problem. The whole system goes nuts: the load rises (one morning was the first time I'd ever seen a Linux system with a load of 19!) , obviously no data gets written, I have to fsck the drives manually, and it's generally a PIA. The cables are super-high quality; I've played with both auto and manual termination on all drives; there's nothing plugged into the external SCSI port on the card; and the SCSI driver is the standard Adaptec AIC7XXX that comes with the 2.0.35 kernel. I'll check more stuff but I've worked with SCSI for a while and at least think I know what I'm doing! Is there a newer driver on the horizon that could fix this? Perhaps it's a known bug and I just don't know where to look? Thanks. [SuSE Linux] New PC - what should I go for?

I have a pleasant problem - my boss wants to upgrade my desktop pc.... Cost is not too much of a problem, but I don't want to go crazy (or make a fool of myself). I guess what I need to know is what would give me the most 'bang for the buck' as the Americans say... as well as not become too obsolete over-night. I need to be able to edit/record/encode audio, Real Audio and mp3 - preferably in real-time. It would also be nice if I could 'live' encode video at 15 fps in Real Video. So I'm guessing a twin-cpu 300mHz Intel P2 might fit the bill. I need it (badly!) to be compatible with SuSE Linux - my main OS from now on - as well as NT I guess (although I'm having fewer crashes with Win98 than with NT4 sp3 at present!) I guess I also need a pc that can use readily available hardware such as video cards and HD etc that will also work okay with Linux. I'd be very interested to hear the comments of the list - should I stick with the above , or would I be better served with something a little more exotic like a DEC Alpha or whatever...? Also - one hears comments that NT is so unreliable only because "you're using some 'chinese special' motherboard and bios", and that a genuine IBM or an HP or whatever, would work better. (I'm a little skeptical because my 'chinese special' runs so reliably with Linux - whatever the flavour....) Is it better to go with one of the 'name brands'? [SuSE Linux] Modifying the APS Filter to print headings????

Can anyone tell me how to activate the Feature for aps which prints the file name at the top or bottom of each page? I found the description of the FEATURE=2 in the apsfilterrc file, but I am not sure how to invoke the variable. Do I need to reconfigure aps using SETUP or Yast? Jan H.
